What an absolute flopshow of a movie. Started out so well with a fantastic concept - an indian gangster sent 'onshore' to do the same job there. Illogical storyline but could have been a good movie if the movie was done well. Dhanush does a fairly decent job holding the movie together - in fact he's the only reason one can bear the ~2.5 hours of movie time. First half is bearable; second half goes down the hole.

Ignore unless you are a fan of Dhanush.
Plus one to that. I watched only the first half, but my wife sat through the whole movie.

2/5, her rating.

Saw Court (2014) over the weekend. It's a Marathi movie which has won multiple International film festival awards.

Hard hitting story and great performances. Recommended watch.

Agree, absolute rubbish. After the first episode of Dhanush in London, I was like enough!! Can't digest anymore.

This was one royal mess of a movie! Karthik Subbaraj’s worst movie probably! First, the movie wants to be of all genres, some quirk, some funny bits and then suddenly it gets in to a serious tone about the Lankan Tamil crisis!
A movie like Jigarthanda ( the first movie of Karthik subbaraj ) worked because of its clarity in its genre. Not Jagame Thandiram. They are lucky they released it on Netflix, if it had ever hit the theatres it would have been a miserable flop! I don’t know why a brilliant director makes such bad movies! Commercial expectations? You just have to watch this movie called “iraivi” to really know what Karthik subbaraj is capable of. But he seems to now make movies only for the stars!

Funny you would bring Iraivi - all through the movie, I was thinking if only Vijay Sethupathi was in this movie - he would have been perfect. If not Dhanush's role, then Sivadoss's role (not that Joju George did it badly).

Seems like the script originally wasn't that bad, but somewhere down the line they screwed it up royally.

A minor correction. Pizza was the first movie for Karthik Subbaraj and Jigarthanda was his second

100% agree. For the first five minutes, I thought, someone has made an effort to emulate Guy Ritchie. Few mins later, I was knocked back to reality.

Filmmakers, even after repeated failures, have not understood one thing. Cause of Lankan Tamils does not invoke the feelings in us as they think it would. They cannot exploit our feelings in the name of crappy storylines.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Watched two smooth satisfying movies back to back. Sherni and Kamali from Nadukaveri. Kamali from nadukaveri had a theatrical release during pandemic period, got good reviews but managed just decent run. Now available on Zee5. Coming in the wake of Disaster Jagame Thandiram on OTT where creative Karthik Subbraj and talented Dhanush put tamil cinema to shame, Kamali is refreshing and inspiring. Mostly unpopular faces on and behind the screen, the team has redeemed some pride for Tamil cinema. Initially a bit slow, but keeps the interest alive subsequently. It has its share of weakness in script that the motivation of a girl to pursue IIT is because she is charmed by a boy on TV. But the narration and acting are so natural and down to earth. The ending is very satisfying seeing her transformation. Fine performance by Anandhi and all actors. The greenery of Tanjavur is captured pleasingly and the lyrics of the songs are very inspirational. Kudos to the director and producer for giving a neat and social movie amidst the masala churners. Not to miss for Tamil movie watchers.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

[Cold Case - Malayalam, Amazon Prime]

This one dropped on Prime yesterday and I managed to do a FDFS equivalent on OTT on this one.

The story has two threads - one, a cop investigating the provenance on a human skull fished out of a lake; and two, a journalist who's somewhat upset with the strange goings-on in the rented house she recently moved in to. Somewhere in the middle of the movie both of them come up with the same name and their investigative paths cross; but there is no combined investigation because soon after that the culprit and motive are all revealed.

The cop thread is a police procedural and somewhat fascinating (except the fag end where they relied on an unnecessary coincidence to establish a certain fact when they could very well have figured it out by just following their procedure). The journalist thread, while it has some ridiculous horror tropes (the séance scene stands out as one of the most unintentionally funny scenes seen in recent times), has decent characterisations and interplay.

The denouement happens about 20 minutes before the end and from that point on, the movie is a train wreck. Until then, it was quite enjoyable.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Pandemic has created such an eagerness and yearning to the people that they welcome any movie that comes out of the OTT, to the extent that Kerala vision broad band wifi crashed at some places once the movie was released.

Coming to the movie:

Cold Case (Malayalam) – 3/5

Off late what we have seen is, especially during these locked down times, you throw a thriller, horror, police investigation with a relatively meaningful story and that is going to be an instant hit if not an average.

Here comes a mix of Priest, Drishyam, Nizhal, Forensic and the likes.. Cold case is a decent watch and interesting plot. Prithviraj’s charisma is a sure crowd puller no matter what the story line is.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Watched Cold case in Prime last night. Simply not interesting. Tried to mix cheap horror and some lame forensic themes. The cinematography is worth mentioning, beautifully captured the Kerala greenery and elegant houses.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Watched "Crossing Bridges" in prime 4/5.

Excellent movie, with a simple storyline.
It is about a guy who goes back to his village in Arunachalpradesh after a job loss.
Very nuanced cinematography, with a beautiful location.

Aanum Pennum (Malayalam)

The Regional movies thread!-aanumpennum.jpg.image.845.440.jpg

Pretty good line-up of cast and that's it. This can be skipped.

Rating - 1/5

Cold Case (Malayalam)

The Regional movies thread!-coldcasemovie.jpg

Like others had pointed out, it started off well and was very interesting, but spoiled the last bit. The acting was poor in that sequence. Definitely watchable (few scares though). Some sections of the BGM reminded me of the score from "Mumbai Police" (The trumpet score).

Rating - 3/5

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Watched Cold Case and liked it. The parallel track investigation was unique. Good performance by Aditi Balan. Prithvi was good of course, but nothing new for him but underplays it well as per the requirement of the script. The director could have cashed in on his superstar image which he did not do. The last 20 odd minutes was pretty weak. If the climax could have been put together better, would have made it much better. Still would rate it 3.5/5.

Aanum pennum watched on TV in bits and pieces. Good cast and performances, but not my kind of film.

Thaen-Tamil -Sony Liv. Story about a couple living in a remote settlement in a hill top having to face civilization and government machinary. Read rave reviews of it. Great movie , but honestly very depressing.

Tonight SaraS is coming on Prime. Anna Ben and Sunny Wayne in a Jude Anthony film. Hoping it will be a good one. Followed by Fahad's big budget Malik on 15th.

Cold Case - Malayalam (Amazon Prime)

Watched this with family almost as a first day first show format as we had the day off. I felt nothing worth mentioning, so didn't even bother coming here to put up a review. Just another movie depicting the now so-predictable horror movie sequence with a cop investigation angle thrown in.

Frankly, i feel if this movie didn't have any big names, or have generated hype on online platforms, it would have been just another movie. Timepass, one time watch. Nothing more.

Rating : 2.5/5 from me.
