I totally agree with this (I haven't finished watching the movie, so I don't know if this part has any relevance to the denouement) - it was totally cringe.

And this from the actor who gave us so many memorable drunk acts in the past. Remember Chithram?

Edit: Mohanlal, drunk and lovable:

Vijay made a big mistake by clubbing with Nelson. Doctor movie was good, but the climax was plain stupid. NSA scenes had no seriousness to it, except for the key hijacker no one else seemed to be serious about their role. Some movies survive purely due to stardom even if storyline is zero - Beast is a perfect example for the same.

Thuppaki was the only good Vijay movie I can think of in the last 5-6yrs. In Master it was Vijay Sethupati who acted way better and more natural.

John Luther (M) - Theatre - 2.5/5

I always try to watch Jayasuriya’s movie because of the sheer hard work that he puts to make his character and the movie successfull, especially after his brilliant efforts in Captain and Vellam.

This is an investigation type movie which starts with a nice thrilling theme but later on loses the grip. Jayasuriya as CI John Luther tries his best to keep the movie engaging and it is mostly a one man show throughout. Overall watchable and an Anjam Pathira type.

Came here to put the review of John Luther and you saved me the trouble of writing. Had the exact same comments and rating in mind.

From the above, it would be clear that this is a template seen quite a lot. Couple of English movies and the famous Agatha Cristy movies come to mind.
Exactly. As soon as the investigation started, it reminded me of Agatha Cristy's adaptations. Nice work on the visual editing (transition to the flashback and present).

The supporting actors were all bad, except maybe for Saiju Kurup who was better of the lot. I have always felt that modern type of roles never suited Anu Sithara and Anusree. Something I felt about Manu Warreir too especially "Lalitham Sundaram".

The problem I find with Jayasurya’s serious movies is that he put loads of hard work and effort into the role, so much that the ease is gone, and effort goes into over-performance. I felt that about Captain, Pretham 2 etc., so much that I skipped Vellam, Sunny etc. I wish he does more of comedy roles – a total riot in movies like Amar Akbar and Aadu 2.

That said, I am looking forward to John Luther to be released on OTT (the trailer looked promising). Meri Awas Suno I feel will be another trip of melodrama (considering the directors track record).

Agree to a large extent. He does the role quite convincingly that the after effects remain. We skipped watching Sunny for the same reason.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

I watched 12th Man over the weekend. Somehow didn’t like it. Even MohanLal’s performance, other than in a few instances, were average. Too many loop holes in the movie. The rest of the cast had nothing great to mention too. It felt like the hole cast and crew shot this movie when they were all very serious and tight.

This week, I plan to watch ‘Kaathuvaakula rendu kaadhal’. Vijay Sethupathi doesn’t disappoint much. And with Nayan and Samantha, I’m hoping it’ll be a good one.

It's watchable, nothing to talk about. But not as good as Naanum rowdy dhaan.

I switched off the move in 30 minutes. Lal Ettan was simply unbearable.

It's just not him though. Many of his contemporaries across regional cinema are unwatchable at the moment. I used to love the earlier Mohanlal movies but I find them hard to watch now, even a classic such as Manichitratazhu. The acting that we once enjoyed now seems loud, unrealistic and over the top. The dialogues feel forced and artificial. Those movies haven't aged well at all.

I think Fahad's films will age well. He gets it.

I hope Mohanlal would revisit his style, get into the skin of his characters and underplay. But that's probably not going to happen, is it?

Don - Tamil (Theatre)

Watched the Sivakarthikeyan starrer a week back. Overall a nice movie and will probably take one back to college days. Samuthirakani as the father, has once again given an amazing performance. SJ Suryah also has done justice to this role.

A one time watch and is expected soon on OTT (Netflix) sometime in the first week of June.

Jana Gana Mana - Malayalam (Netflix)

The Regional movies thread!-janaganamana.jpg

It's hard to fault this one. Entertaining, thrilling, thought-provoking, all balanced to perfection with awesome BGM and a fabulous cast. One of Malayalam's greatest finds as a strong character artist has to be Suraj.

While the first half is Suraj all the way, he is well supported by the rest before the movie kicks into overdrive in the second half, and how! I felt some vibes of Rang De Basanti in this one, and the way real life incidents have been incorporated into the narrative.

Don't miss this one.

Rating : 4.5/5
