Puzhu (Malayalam): Brilliant!
Slow burner but always gripping and no spoon feeding attempted.

Strictly not for those who like every frame crammed with lots of “content”.

Ananthabhadram (2011) malayalam

Fantacy horror movie - Disney+ Hotstar - 4/5

Name: images 27.jpeg
Views: 478
Size: 27.3 KB

Starring : Manoj K Jayan, Prithviraj, Kavya Madhavan, Riya sen, kalabhavan Mani etc.

Based on a fantacy novel by Malayalam writer Sunil parameshwaran and directed by Santhosh Shivan, this movie revolves around a small fictional village in Kerala where beliefs , black magic etc are part of life.

The movie is known for its cinematography and stunning frames (one of the best works by Santhosh Shivan).

Manoj K Jayan stole the show in acting department. His best performance till date after his first movie Sargam.
Prithviraj, Kavya, Mani & others did well too. There is one song which is inspired by Ravi Varma paintings and Kavya look awesome. (Made me fall in love with her during my collage days )

If you are a person who likes fantacy, black magic and horror(ish) movies, it's worth a watch.

Not a bad movie and Jayasurya once again does a great job. Manju Warrier is much much better than the horror that was 'Jack and Jill', but a regular role for her.

Rating 2.5/5
I watched only up to the part where Manju Warrier comes to Jayasurya's house and agrees to help. Felt she/director was trying to pull off a Mohanlal-style performance (going a bit over the top to elevate the character). Not sure if that changed through the rest of the movie, but going by your rating, I think it didn't work out.

Good analogy. It was exactly like that right till the end. In fact 2-3 scenes involving her which had absolutely no connection to the plot or the situation. Purely for some additional screen time for Manju Warrier. Close-ups, actions etc.. Like we see in superstar movies..

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Kuttavum Shikshayum- Asif Ali- Netflix: A decent watch centering on a jewellery theft and subsequent investigation. A proper police procedural that focuses on the step by step hard work that goes into an investigation without any typical cinematic aha moments from the hero that fast tracks the investigation.

On the downside, it remains very even throughout and there is no sense of danger or increase in tension as it moves towards the climax.

Rating: 2.5/5

No Way Out: Pisharody-Prime: Randomly came across this one and decided to kill some time watching it. A survival thriller. Only 90 odd min long but that itself was probably 45 min too long. . Pisharody is a businessman, alone at home. Covid Lockdown has started, in deep debt, pregnant wife, decides to commit suicide and sets it up so that he cannot back out. Instance before he takes the drastic step, gets a phone call (which Siri answers) which solves all his problems. Then around 1 hr is spent on how he attempts to come out of the noose.

Survival thrillers work when there are several difficult things the survivor can try and that makes us invested into that process. Hence the possibilities are very limited and hence it drags on for a very very long time.

Would have worked better as a 30-45 min short film. I finished the 2nd 45 min in 15 min. So technically watched it for 45 min I guess.

Rating: 1.5/5

Re: The Regional movies thread!

21 hours

Streaming: Amazon Prime

Starring one of my current favourite Kannada actor Dhananjaya, this thriller is actually a cropper as the story is quite stale. No known faces other than the lead actor. The acting by Dhananjaya is eccentric in the movie but he manages to pull it off well.

Wonder why the actor is called NataRakshasha. Is it because he started as a villian and rose to a lead actor?

Kuttavum Shikshayum- Netflix: 1.5/5

Started with a nice premise. Cops shown as intelligent & not super human. Very realistic

And that is the problem: the movie is like spending a day with cops watching them do their jobs. Paint drying would have more drama.

Nothing happens in the movie for all the build up they do.

Avoid.

Nenjukku Needhi - SonyLiv - 3.5/5

Watched this yesterday. I liked it. Its a remake of the hindi flick Article15. I had watched the hindi one too, and clearly, I liked the Tamil version better. They have nicely dealt a very sensitive caste/inequality topic.

Jallikkettu (Malayalam): prime

A bit late to watch this one. No remorse at all for being late. Such a waste of time with all the loud acting and all! Or maybe I am a bit less bright to appreciate the hidden messages in these movies.

In the end left me wondering how a 90 mins long movie felt too long to watch

Have not finished watching it yet, but I think I can confidently say it is the worst Malayalam movie in quite a while.

A revenge drama wrapped around AI, Robotics, Humanoid mumbo jumbo. Has a good line up of actors starting with Manju Warrier, Soubin, Kalidas Jayaram, Indrans, Basil, Aju Varghese, but the characterization is so bad that the acting is horrible.

Coming from Santosh Sivan who has directed a few good ones and of course has been the cinematographer for innumerable films, one would expect higher making standards.

Rating: One of those 'it is so bad that it should be seen to believe how bad it is'

Manju Warrier seems to be having a release every other week and most of them are bad. Doing armchair criticizing, but she should definitely be more selective in what she does.

Trivia: Soubin plays the role of a humanoid inside a box chattering away in Malayalam with a kochi slang. Kalidas is the scientist that won a worldwide competition for designing the best humanoid.
I had the misfortune of watching this yesterday, despite my wife's well-meant advice against it.

This movie is SO BAD, you have no idea how much! I seriously cannot understand how a movie can go through so many levels of script, cinematography, acting, post production, release... and no one thinks this one is meant for the dump?!

The wasted talent pool of actors in this movie, the amount of money spent to bring this to fruition... all reeks of thoughtlessness. Forget the younger bunch, but to get people like Nedumudi Venu and Indrans to be part of such a crass attempt is just criminal.

Manju Warrier seems to be going all out to fund her new found love for cars, and hence not surprised she's in this one.

Please avoid, unless ofcourse you have FOMO.

+100,
I too don't understand the hype around this movie or the "hidden" meaning it conveys. It was too loud, too long and a staggering mix of Over+Under acting.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Major 3.5/5 (Telugu)
This one had me in tears. I've no words to say about this movie based on Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan's sacrifice for our Country. The movie delivers on what it promises. The first half is a bit soft with some snippets from his high-school romance thrown in. But the second half had that outstanding climax, and we were all crying for this hero. Adivi Sesh has good screen presence and has acted well in the titular role. More movies should be made on our armed forces and their valour

Keedam: Malayalam : ZEE5.

watched it because I like the lead lady. Started well. Middle was good too. Somehow the finish was quite cinematic and dramatic. Decent one time watch. 3/5.
