Movie theaters are a dead concept, I'd say
Absolutely NOT. Some movies are to be watched in theatres to get the real feel of what the makers have envisioned. Also, watching along with a crowd certainly has its plus points.

Just to take examples of recent launches - I was atleast able to bear watching them in theatre but would never would have sat through in front of a TV: Kunjali Marakkar, Beast, RRR, Vikram... etc...

Re: The Regional movies thread!

I see comparisons of Vikram with The Dark Knight, Breaking Bad etc, and - no offense meant here - can’t help but laugh my backside off

I mean really? A meth head gangster antagonist with absolutely no character arc, no competing ideological motive vis-a-vis the protagonist, who the audience is supposed to find menacing because of high-induced superpowers? How laughably juvenile can we get? The big reveal of the all powerful mob boss at the end is a cringe fest. When, if ever, shall our film makers realise that real power doesn’t come from the edge of a knife, or show of blood and gore?

The action sequences were mediocre at best, except for the one with Agent Tina - the actor seems to have put in genuine effort. The protagonist’s sermon on drug evil, and being warriors of tomorrow - seemed superficial and kind of ticking of the social-relevant-message box in between all the blazing guns and one man heroism.

No amount of big screen estate can elevate mediocrity, and unfortunately Vikram is just that. My opinion!

Re: The Regional movies thread!

My wife and i are horror movies afficionados and we have more or less run out of Hollywood horror movies and most of the South East Asian ones.

Having been recommended Maya, a tamil horror movie, which was pretty good, i was wondering if you guys could suggest some good horror (supernatural stuff) movies from the regional side

Rocky did point out some really good ones. I am sure you would have watched "Pizza" (Tamil).

If you don't mind watching Hindi, you may want to catch up with some of Ram Gopal's old thrillers.

Bhoot - I totally loved this
Kaun
Darna Mana Hai and Darna Zaroori Hai - Some of the stories are weird but ok
Raat - Considered as a cult classic. I found it to be just ok.
Ragini MMS - Similar to paranormal activity. Please avoid part 2.

+1 to Andhagaaram. It's a slow burner and many people might run out of patience but it's a fantastic movie and available on Netflix.

I would suggest couple of 90's Tamil Horror/slasher movies -

1. Naalai Manithan
2. Adhisaya Manithan

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Watched Gargi in theatre's. There are some movies which overwhelm you. Gargi is simply one of the best. Sai Pallavi has done the role of her career in this one. A brilliant thriller with a n unexpected climax. The movie is an emotional courtroom drama of sexual abuse, empathy and assumptions. The movie is not without its flaws and there are some areas which are overdone.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Someone here said Vikram has foul language and excessive violence. Which means iam not gonna watch it.

OT - Kamal movies are an acquired taste. One must have the stomach for over-acting.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

I think Vikram is overrated and mostly fuelled by Kamal fans. Overacting, silly villain surprise at the end, drug lord image, 35kg RDX - seriously? But at least it was not as bad as Beast (by Vijay) or Action (by Vishal) as they are the Zxi++ versions of flop movies.

G. Aravindan's - Kummatty (1979)

Martin Scorsese had recently restored this movie to its original. Magical surrealism mixed with some socialism.

Warning : For serious movie buffs only!!

I don't remember where I read it, but it goes like this - Rajni promises trash and delivers trash, Kamal promises class and delivers trash.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Vaashi- Malayalam-Tovino, Keerthy Suresh-Netflix

Quite liked this one. As the trailer already shows, both of them are lawyers who are colleagues which turns into love and subsequently marriage. They then find themselves on the opposite sides of a case. I thought a lot of focus would be on their dynamics in the courtroom and the case itself would be a side player. While the dynamics is there, the case being discussed is also an important one and gets the needed importance.

No bombastic courtroom monologues or major twists. Courtroom scenes are shown as it should be. Tovino and Keerthy chemistry is pretty good and they have performed well also.

Rating: 3/5

Completely agree with your views and I found the movie engrossing, considering I watched the movie with subtitles. Always have a soft corner for anything legal and I always have great respect for Malayalam cinema since some years. Enjoyed it fully.

If anyone enjoys watching Bangla series then there is a nice series named Tiktiki on Hoichoi App. Featuring two of the finest actors of Bengal, it’s a game of wits and is a fascinating watch.

Is this the web series version of Soumitra's superhit play of the same name? Which ran houseful for like 2 decades or so?

Re: The Regional movies thread!

I finished half of ‘Vashi’ tonight. Interesting so far. Rajeevraj has given the perfect summary in his post above.

I caught ‘Dear friend’ - Netflix, Malayalam, over the weekend. It’s about how a bunch of friends deal with a ‘trust’ situation arising from one of them in their group. Tovino was good. So was Dharshini. Ok ok movie. 3/5
