Indeed, the series has been adapted from the play by the same name only which in turn was adapted from the English Play SLEUTH by the great Soumitra Chatterjee. In fact, the play was itself a masterpiece and superbly acted by the great Soumitra Chatterjee himself and Koushik Sen. If you have seen the play, you will like the series as well.

Dear Friend - Malayalam (Netflix)

I wasn't too sure if I enjoyed this one. The movie focusses on a supposedly close group of friends based in Bangalore, trying to get through the grind of a startup, financial issues, family ties and their friendship. Soon enough, there is a twist in the story, and things just seem to be a bit too far fetched from there on, IMHO.

Tovino did really well, and I say this without going into details. Rest of the cast seem to do their part, although I felt some side stories were brought in, and then conveniently ignored.

Ok, as a one time watch, and nothing more.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Being on leave has its own advantage, gives an opportunity to catch up with the movies.

Hit: The first case

Streaming: Amazon Prime.

The 2020 original telugu movie based on which the Hindi one was made and released shortly. The Telugu one doesnt have any known cast but is a good thriller to watch. Lots of twists and surprises and the story keeps you glued. Thanks to the subtitles, the movie was fun to watch with a twisting climax. Hope the Hindi one lives to the reputation considering Rajkumar Rao is starring. Would recommend the movie for a one time watch. The prequel to this telugu movie is supposed to hit the theatres by the end of the this month.

In - Malayalam

The Regional movies thread!-screenshot-20220720-7.51.09-am.png

Knew it would be bad and I was right. Watched only because it was a thriller/mystery and I was never fond of the lead female's acting.
Started off well but then it was just super bad. No real motive for the murders and the climax takes the cake. The female will beat Rajinikanth.
Can be avoided.

Rating - 1/5 (Available on Manorama Max)

I didn't like Dear Friend as well (Stopped it midway) but Vaashi was good.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Watched Dear Friend on Netflix and the climax robbed me 2 hours of my life!

What a ridiculous climax man!

Vaashi OTOH was quite decent and I liked it. Didn’t realise the guy who played Tovino’s father was actually Keerthy Suresh’s real father.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Not a review, but was just thinking of my movie watching preferences. Lot of talk on how even decent films are not succeeding in the theaters. While I had always thought I would return to theaters on a regular basis post covid, looks like that will not be the case. My preferences have also changed to wait for the OTT release even for movies which pre-pandemic I am sure I would have gone to the theaters for.

Most recent examples in Malayalam include Kaduva(Prithviraj), Mahaveeryar(Nivin and Asif) and Malayankunju(Fahad). Surprised at myself that I am not even thinking of going to the theater for these in spite of fairly good reviews.

A survival thriller starring Fahad Fazil & music directed by AR Rehman

Watched it in theaters and didn't find it worth the hype. First half of the movie was bit of a lag in developing and establishing Fahad charector and the second half felt very rushed to climax. If you are a fan of the genere (survival thrillers) and watched many good survival thrillers, this may not be upto the mark. For a people who are not familiar with this genere, this may feel great.

Fahad's performance is the main +ve of this movie. Also the cinematography
Editing needed to be little more crisp , especially first half.
Actress who acted as Fahad's mother and Jaffer Idukki was really good. Rejeesha Vijayan & her charector was not at all convincing.

Coming to the music & BGM, both were not something of AR Rehman's quality. At times it felt irritating too.

Overall watchable. But keep the hopes not high.

Malayankunju (malayalam)
5/5

Watched Malyankunju in the theatre yesterday. What a fantastic movie.
Exceptional performance from Fahad Fazil.

Anyone looking to watch this movie, please go to the theatre and watch.
I haven't seen such a good movie recently.

I would rate it 5/5.

Pathaam Valavu - Malayalam

The Regional movies thread!-202952.jpeg

Nothing new here. Just the same old story that we have seen in many movies. They tried to make the climax a suspense but you know the real guy in the beginning itself (Talk about a bad screenplay).
And I also felt that the characters were wasted in this movie - Suraj was good but nothing special, Indrajith was meh but I felt Ajmal's role was wasted here. He definitely could have taken a better movie for his comeback.

It's just watchable. Nothing to be excited.

Vaashi (Malayalam): Netflix

One of the few movies where I felt Tovino did a good job. I feel he has very limited range and such roles that don't attempt tk exploit an actors range hides this short coming.

The movie itself is quiet good. As already mentioned on this thread, good court room drama with being dramatic. Some pertinent questions also and in my opinion logical conclusion as well.

Decent one time watch.

Rocketry - (Tamil/Hindi/English, Dubbed Malayalam) - 4/5. On Prime.

One of the finest biopic ever made. Madhavan does the role of both director as well as the hero - Nambi Narayanan, eminent ISRO scientist. Very close to real story and nicely made. A story that must be respected.

Charlie 777

Streaming: Voot

I saw the movie based on the good reviews on the forum, however somewhere somehow couldnt connect with the movie. The presence of dog and all was good but the story didnt come out very strong to stop the illegal practice and neither is this going to encourage people to adopt strays. An over all feel good kind of movie. Had high hopes on Rakshit Shetty after watching Kirik party (which actually went down a bit with Avane Srimananarayana) but left me wanting for more.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Malayankunju (M) - 0/5

What a crap movie! A miserably failed one man show IMHO.

A movie intentionally made to glorify Mr.FF and send to award nominations. If that was the intention, then well done. But please, do not release all across and waste our time and money. Seriously, no story. Kudos to the makers to drag it for 2 hours without any story and what was supposed to be a 30 mins documentary. It is indeed a nice subject but I have no clue why they did not care to to develop it into a good story and script.

A one day life is repeated 3 times, which forms the first half, and second half - man, could have watched it in 3x speed if it was possible. What a drag in second half.

AR Rahman music is totally out of place. It was like he gave some tunes to the makers without watching the movie. Simply wasted and torture with BGM.

Was excited when I saw the cast so decided to watch it immediately. Boy, it was a drag fest! All characters were wasted and none had any expression. The story doesn't make any sense as well. If you get something, I expected her to either use it or hand it over (It wasn't anything like cash or weapon to be so confused). Saroj Kumar from "udayananu tharam" did something so that we could enjoy that movie .

Rating - 0/5. Skip it (Available on Disney Hotstar)

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Not a movie review, but the latest viral Malayalam thing on the internet. An old popular song combined with a freaky dance from Kunchacko Boban. Been trending no 1 on. YouTube India music videos for a few days now.
