Re: The Regional movies thread!

Oke Oka Jeevitham (Telugu)

*ing Sharwanand, Amala Akkineni, Vennela Kishore , Priyadarshi ...

Genre: Sci-Fi Drama

After a long wait, there comes a sensible movie in Telugu that tries to attempt the ever-alluring '"Time Travel' with right mix of sentiment ,comedy and other elements that will pin you to the seat till the end.

Though not deep on the realms of Sci-Fi writing, the elements added to spruce up the story are quite heart warming and pique the curiosity ( with a few losse ends, that can be forgiven).

All the cast have done great jobs. Special Shout to Amala Akkineni who mesmerizes the audience with her immensely pleasing screen presence and poised performance.

Rating - 4/5 - I'd say a must watch !

PS : It is also released in Tamil as Kanam

Nna Than Case Kodu

Quite a decent watch. But somehow underwhelming. I know it's against the popular opinion here. But I felt the recent barrage of hyper realistic movies from Kerala has taken its toll on my liking. I didn't find anything substantially different from say Thingalazhcha Nishchayam from a fulfilment point of view.

It was a good movie no doubt and great bit of camera. But I think I need a break from these types of malayalam movies.

Watched: Nna than Case kodu

In Telugu, for some reason all characters in the movie have their voices dubbed in Telugu except the female lead role, her voice is in Tamil.

Good movie, but felt many things are not realistic, I believe there are enough corrupt judges for such a fair trial to happen.

Its the characterisation, she speaks Tamizh in the original to; nothing amiss here.

Its natural that such movies have a selective fan base - and thankfully that base is sizeable enough in Kerala to warrant such movies being produced.
Cannot agree more to these statements. Being very much from this place where the movie is set, it is that local slang and its usage which made me, and I am sure, for many from this part of Kerala, that made it interesting and extremely witty. I do not think I would have enjoyed it as much if it was in a different slang. Of course, the story thread is good too.

And of course, the theatre experience makes a difference. Because for this sort of movie, you need 100% attention. It needs all your focus, line by line. The humor lies in the intricate dialogues, scenes and mannerisms. Those are the spices. If you miss those, it might look bland.

Thallumala-Tovino-Netflix-Malayalam

I am not sure if I liked it or not. . It is a very different, loud, comic book type colorful film with a fight a minute(as the name implies) and a song a minute. The story is wafer thin but it follows a highly non-linear narrative that really switches from one context and point of time to another in super quick time. So if you do not pay attention for 5 min, you may have lost the whole thread. This is what makes it watchable and hides the fact that there is no big story. The fights are great and while the songs did not connect with me, I guess it does with the current generation of kids and young adults. Was a big success in the theater release and even on OTT, needs to be watched with full attention.

Not rating it as I still don't know if I liked it or not.

Oru Thekkan Thallu Case - Malayalam - Theatre

Quite a nice entertainer. It's hard to go wrong with Biju Menon nowadays. Set in the 90s, the story revolves around the rivalry between 2 guys from the same village. The second character could have been stronger, the script could have been a bit more precise I felt. However, the cinematography & stuff portraying a village from the 90s was excellent. So was the comedy. Definitely worth one watch.

Watched 'Oke Oka Jeevitam' today. Loved it. Very sensible movie and all of the actors did excellent job. Must watch with family specially with kids.

Read your story as well just now and loved it too. Superb writing tchsvy. Liked the ending in your story as it's more realistic.

The concept of the movie is very much similar to yours. We can't change whatever happened to us in the past, but what you do today will affect your future.

Attention Please (Malayalam)

The Regional movies thread!-attention_please_2022_movie_poster_1_211.jpeg

Some may find the language or stories being narrated offensive (They have tried to use some complex words to cover the profanity in some places). Sort of a "Darna Mana Hai" style but wish they had included similar anthology style (but again, the content is a bit violent/harsh) and the lead actor's acting would have missed. Coming to that, Vishnu Govind absolutely nails with his acting. Known for his witty roles (most of them really small), he totally takes this to the next level.

Definitely not to everyone's taste and no idea if I should recommend this. But it's his acting that did the trick for me.

Rating - 4/5 (Available on Netflix)

As for the Onam releases,

Nna, Thaan Case Kodu - Brilliant (5/5)

Papppan - (4/5)

Thallumaala - Skipped it. Guess it didn't entertain me

Recently watched "Doob: No bed of Roses" (Netflix), starring Irrfan Khan, Nusrat Imroz Tisha, Parno Mittra. A Bengali film and Bangladesh's entry at the 2019 Academy Awards (best foreign language film). Well made & watchable as Bengali films go. Irrfan, as expected, stole the show.

Another fascinating Bengali watch (Netflix) was "Meghnadbodh Rohoshyo", starring Sabyasachi Chakraborty, Abir Chatterjee, Gargi Roychowdhury. A gripping film based on a Bengali classic - the disappearance of a professor weaves a gripping mystery.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Thallumala -Malayalam (Netflix)

Disclaimer: This will be an unpopular opinion here.

Another over-rated movie in my opinion. Just could not understand the hype behind this one. It is basically a set of fights being stuck together in a non linear fashion to tell a story that does not exist.

The only thing going for the movie in my opinion is showcasing the beautiful Muslim culture of malabar.

Absolutely hated the non-linear story telling which was there only to bring some interest to a script that had no soul.

Sita Ramam : Prime video (Malayalam)

What a pleasant surprise this one. I did not have any expectations from it but felt it was a good one. DQ and Mrunal Thakur have a great onscreen chemistry that makes this movie such a beautiful watch

Problem with all these new-gen malayalam movies is that they mistake ultra-casualness to being "realistic". Not too many realise there is a difference. Nadodikkattu/Vadakkunokkiyantram were not casual at all, but were extremely realistic and are legends.

Add to that the recent trend in malayalam cinema of using fast-speaking regional slangs/dialects that make the movie unintelligible to malayalees who are not from that area. Iam a malayalee but i spent 75% of "nna thaan case kodu" wondering what was just said on screen. Most of the movie was "lost in translation".

Nadodikkattu cant be considered a realistic movie by any stretch of imagination. It was a good slapstick but with a few real human issues

Vadakkunokkiyantram too was also hardly subtle with lots of slapstick moments.

But both movies had good theme and real relatable characters

Wouldnt like to comment on your comment on current movies but personally I feel most are spot on with their understanding of realism

Till date all Kerala movie characters were either talking in Valluvanadan accents or Trivandrum accents. Lets just say that the hitherto less known language of extreme north and high ranges are getting its due
