Por Thozil (Tamil, Sony)

A nice little piece of murder whodunit. Unlike typical tamil movies, no melodrama, no songs (except one at the very end for some emotional effect). And pretty good acting.

3.75/5

Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddare (Kannada) - 5/5

Absolutely hilarious riot, this movie is. There's no proper storyline. There's no logic. There are no mainstream actors (except a cameo by Rishab Shetty and possibly other Kannada actors that I am not aware of). This movie should not be worth a review. As the movie's tagline goes - "The worst film ever made in the history of cinema".

But it is one of the best movies I have seen this year across all languages. The movie is littered with puns, jokes, twists and turns and is ridiculously funny! Even the songs are worth the money. It's so good the wifey and I are going to re-watch it this weekend

P.s. I relied on the subtitles. Still worth it. Plus if any of you have lived in hostels, do NOT miss this

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Found Jawan (Tamil) Extended Cut on Netflix. Sat through the first 20 or so minutes, and what did I see? One man against the system, uneducated politicians, corrupt businessman who is "above all". I thought I was watching a Shankar movie from 30 years back with the same dialogues!! Only more trailing zeroes have been added to the crores quoted. Watching it in Tamil only re-enforced the feeling. Quit watching and don't plan to go back.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Weekend watching.

Skanda (Telugu)

Streaming: Hotstar

Crap, Crap, crap. Period.

Rating: 0/5

Raththam (Tamil)

Streaming: Amazon

A good gripping story although the plot is revealed mid way after which the movie becomes like any other pot boiler with the Hero doing far fetched things. Good to see a female as an Antagonist. I liked the acting of Vijay Antony, Mahima Nambiar ably supported by N Ravi amongst the known faces. There is a social message too in the film plot. One time watch for sure.

Garudan (M) - 4/5

Very interesting script and must watch. A different type of investigative thriller. Suresh Gopi and Biju Menon nailed it. And so were Siddique and Jagadish. Engaging movie till the end.

The Great Indian Suicide - Telugu (Tamil audio available)

The Regional movies thread!-a1.jpg

If you havent seen the documentary, then you might find this ok but the documentary is anyday better and more chilling. The acting was poor in this one but the climax was pretty fine.

Rating - 2/5 (Available on aaa). Watch the documentary instead.

The Road - Tamil

The Regional movies thread!-a2.jpg

Dont go by the reviews. This can be avoided. It was tagged as "Mystery", "Suspense" but wasn't worth it. Also, the movie sidetracks and shows new characters, story, time period - at that moment you think it's a whole different movie. Poor editing as well. Shabeer's acting was the only good thing.

Rating - 1/5 (Available on aha). Skip it!

Sapta Sagaradache Ello - Side B
Language - Kannada

I had been waiting for SideB since I saw Side A, finally saw the movie yesterday, didn't want to post immediately as I wanted the movie to sink in, it was totally different to what I had imagined, still very intense and painful, the banter between Rakshit and Gopal Deshpande provides a few laughs in between the intense plot. Rakshit's eyes do all the talking in side B, very beautifully portrayed, Chaitra is good, unfortunately, Rukmini's character hasn't been explored more, the plot moves forward from Manu's (Rakshit's) point of view. The fight at the end is where it felt cliched, except that I feel the movie is apt. There are a lot of scenes where the director shows what is going on in Manu's head, it is complicated, small things where you have to pay attention. If you are expecting a masala movie, then the movie isn't for you, for people looking at a very mature handling of the characters, something different, definitely a must watch.

Theeppori Benny - Malayalam

The Regional movies thread!-1.jpg

Nothing great. Same old story that we have seen in countless malayalam movies in the 90's. I found the acting below average as well.
Watch it if you dont have anything else to watch.

Rating - 2/5 (Amazon Prime)

Kannur Squad - Malayalam

The Regional movies thread!-2.jpg

This already had a good run in the theaters, so was waiting for it. Can say that it didnt disappoint. Movie is a bit long and the storyline is pretty straight forward, but you wont feel the drag. Very well taken and the BGM was also good. Found Mammootty to be pretty ordinary but Rony David stood out and Azees supported him as well in my opinion. Overall, a good watch.

Rating - 4/5 (Hotstar)

I watched this yday and liked the movie for the plot but felt the story could have been even more grippier. The plot is revealed quite early in the movie and its just a stretch to reach the climax. The climax could have been better. I sometimes dont like the languages being mixed - Tamil with Malayalam, Malayalam with Kannada etc. That takes away the continuity. Mammooty as usual is the highlight of the movie along with the Tata Sumo.. Rest of the cast supported well.

Rating: 3/5

Tiger Nageshwar Rao (Telugu)

Streaming: Amazon

There are some good telugu movies and there are movies like this and the other one I saw Skanda. I fail to understand the logic of making such movies. This movie is gore fest, not be viewed with family. I was surprised why this movie didn't get the A certification for the gory scenes. Understandably Ravi Teja is a Mass star but this one was not even of any mass level.

Rating: 1.5/5

True, the story or plot of the film is uncomplicated.
Yet, the making of the film and its BGM make it worth watching.

Here's the OST:https://open.spotify.com/album/3slMx...TLeHXd6B20h6bQ

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Falimy(Malayalam)
Watched it on Sunday along with family. Liked the movie, it's a decent watch. Comical characters and interesting events try to keep us engaged. Family bond and interactions between them are fun and relatable. The family's journey to Kaashi and the events following this are quite funny. I personally liked the performances of the actors and felt they were apt for the role. I liked the actor who played the younger brother of Basil, though I'm seeing him for the first time on screen, he didn't make it feel so. Jagdish plays a different type of role compared to his usual ones, while Manju Pillai and Basil do their regular type of roles well. Overall a feel-good movie, which could be a decent watch for family audience.

Leo (Tamil)

Streaming: Netflix

I was very wary about this movie after seeing Beast & Varisu as they were forgettable films but this one does show the resilience of Vijay to bounce back strongly. Although there are moments where you see the flashes of the Beast type acting but overall a good one. Trisha and Sanjay Dutt supported well, couldn't smile when Sanjay Dutt was mouthing Tamil dialogues. The action scenes are good. Couldn't identify which part/city of HP was this movie shot? Being Lokesh Kanagraj movie it definitely had to have that connection with the LCU and was highlighted in the end. All in all if you are a Vijay fan, your should see this once.

Kaathal – The Core

Had been waiting for the movie to come out ever since I learned it is directed by Jeo Baby, the same guy who directed The Great Indian Kitchen. Went to watch with a lot of expectations, and happy to say it didnt disappoint. Excellent movie about a homosexual individual was forced into a heterosexual marriage, and how it affects everyone involved, especially the hapless spouse. Phenomenal acting by Mammootty and Jyothika. Beautifully handled such a sensitive subject without resorting to either cheap humour or woke nonsense.

Pulimada - Malayalam

The Regional movies thread!-1.jpg

Watch it for Joju's performance - that's it. Other actors supported him but can't reach his performance. But Aishwarya was pathetic in this one.

Rating - 2/5 (Netflix)

Chaaver - Malayalam

The Regional movies thread!-2.jpg

I found this to be boring with ordinary performances. The only good thing was the visuals and BGM. I would happily skip this one.

Rating - 1/5 (SonyLiv)

Leo - Tamil

The Regional movies thread!-3.jpg

Nothing more to say as others have summarised this. I watched this for LCU and felt it was forced onto this one. A pure Vijay fans movie but other than that it was just ordinary.

Rating - 2/5 (For the climax) (Netflix)
