This is well directed movie which throws light on the Tiger poaching - Jay and Veeru to be specific. These twins were very famous who resided in Maharashtra's tiger reserve - Nagzira.
The villagers point of view is well captured.

Jigarthanda Double X

Fantastic movie by Karthik Subbaraj. Easily among his best works. I was a bit skeptical with Lawrence. But he has disproved in this movie. SJ Surya has underplayed when compared to his Maanadu role.

Lot of throwbacks that 70s-80s kids would enjoy. Movie works standalone even without the throwbacks.

This movie goes to prove that new age directors should stay away from star actors, for whom they have to work around a stereotype.

Kaathal – The Core

Very well made. No lags, no vulgarity, no masalas. Just pure class movie. There are couple of songs which are perfectly blended to the movie. Pure respect for the makers for handling such a sensitive topic with high dignity and overall positivity. The beauty is "The core" of the movie is love. I highly appreciate Mammooty for doing this film.

Fantastic movie. Great acting by all the actors, socially relavant theme. The movie starts of as a feel good drama and changes to a gripping thriller. Being a father, the movie was disturbing for me at few parts and I was emotionally touched by it.

Great acting by Siddharth . He carried the role superbly without being dramatic. Same for the child artists. Supported well by other actors.

Nothing interesting. Felt like it could've been better.

Very interesting script and must watch. A different type of investigative thriller. Suresh Gopi and Biju Menon nailed it. And so were Siddique and Jagadish. Engaging movie till the end.
Very good one. Was randomly scouring through Amazon Prime and looking at the summary decided to watch.
Would rate 4/5.
Would love to watch a sequel.

Garudan - Malayalam

The Regional movies thread!-1.jpg

Suresh Gopi, Biju Menon, Jagadeesh and T.Vijay acted really well. Pretty good BGM and cinematography. The first half was brilliant but kind of messed up the second half. I would say the suspense quotient was spoiled towards the end. But overall, a pretty good watch.

Rating - 4/5 (Amazon Prime). Recommended.

Chithha - Tamil

The Regional movies thread!-2.jpg

What did I just witness (acting wise). Siddharath pulled this off with his brilliant acting but for me the little kid was just brilliant in this. She wasn't acting, but living the character. Wouldn't be surprised if she gets an award and am sure she will.

Rating - 4.5/5 (Hotstar). Highly recommended (Story can be sensitive but watch for their acting).

Noodles - Tamil

The Regional movies thread!-3.jpg

Avoid this! Pathetic acting, especially that advocate. A lot of mistakes and unnecessary humour towards the end. Just didn't make sense. Of course you know what will happen during the climax.

Rating - 0/5 (Simply South via VPN).

I believe it was there when I saw, I am sure it is there, these new age director's are trying to attract the non-kannada speaking audiences to the theaters.

Jigar Thanda Double X

Streaming: Netflix

The name of the movie actually caught my attention but had no relation to the movie plot though. I would not call this movie a masterpiece but it was well made, too lengthy in these times. Lawrence and SJ Suryah carry the film on their shoulders through out, Nimisha Sajayan stands out with an equal powerful role. The movie flip flops between lot of stories and finally ends with one powerful message.

Adrishya Jalakangal - Malayalam

The Regional movies thread!-1.jpg

Sort of an art movie and definitely not to everyone's taste. Tovino acted really well and that was it. The ending might puzzle few but if you closely follow the dialogues, you will get the point.

Rating - 2/5 (Netflix)

Somante Krithavu - Malayalam

The Regional movies thread!-2.jpg

It had all the recipe for a good comedy movie, but sort of spoiled it. First half was pretty decent but kinda drags in the second half. The actors did a decent job.

Rating - 2/5 (Amazon Prime)

Pendulum - Malayalam

The Regional movies thread!-3.jpg

A fantasy movie which had a good concept but it gets very confusing as the movie progresses. The first half was slow but rushes towards the end. Of course, we have seen similar movies from Hollywood. BGM and cinematography were good. Vijay Babu did a decent job as well. They could have really worked on the screenplay and dialogues.

Rating - 2/5 (Saina Play)

I had started watching this one, but 30 mins into the movie I could not get the head or the tail of it, hence switched off.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Sesham Mike il Fathima- Malayalam -Netflix

A nice feel good movie about a chatterbox girl from a semi conservative family who wants to become a football commentator and the challenges she faces for the same. Does not delve deep into anything and hence remains a feel good passtime watch.

What makes it a good watch is Kalyani Priyadarsans performance. She has a great screen presence, does the Malabar slang very well and delivers the football commentary sequences extremely well. The film loses its way in the 2nd half but ends with a nice climax sequence again driven by a good performance from Kalyani. Sudheesh also does well as her father.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Neru - 3/5 (M)

Another flick from the Drishyam combo, Lal - Jeethu J. But not to expect a thriller as Drishyam, but a full and full court room drama. Stunning performance from all especially Lal & Siddique. Though there isn’t enough meat in the character for Mohanlal to take up this role, we get to watch the subtle and composed acting of him like yesteryear and something that is hard to find in his any of recent films. That’s what is brilliance, to bring it out from nothing.

Some loose scripts in portrayal of court room trials here and there but overall a good one with a nice ending.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Neru-Mohanlal-Anaswara-Malayalam-Theater

Neru is a very important film and is a great watch because of a number of reasons.
  • It is an all out courtroom drama. Although we have seen many of these via Hollywood movies and web series, in India it is a rare genre. And am not talking about movies with a lot of court room scenes-that we have in plenty. Full on courtroom dramas are almost non existent. Like the makers have reiterated in all their interviews. This is an emotional courtroom drama and that is what it is. Within 20 min into the run time, you are in the courtroom and it remains there till the end.
  • It is not a filmy courthouse. The movie tried to follow proper procedural and although there are some cinematic liberties, this works well. A crime has happened, the accused has been arrested, no one seems to have any doubt he did the crime. But as we see in many movies, bombastic dialogs from a superstar will not help convict him. The court needs proof and the burden of proof is on the prosecution. This is what hooks you on inspite of it being a slow burner.
  • This kind of movie works only if backed by strong performances. 'A Few Good Men' comes to mind. You have that in plenty here. Mohanlal does a comeback after several terrible movies. He is scared, conflicted and vulnerable to start and becomes determined and shows an increase in confidence as the movie progresses. Does the nuances and transformation very well. Siddique is at his nasty best, Priyamani does a great job with the conflict showing on her face all the time. Jagadeesh is good as usual. But the scene stealer is Anaswara Rajan. What a fantastic performance that overshadows everyone else. That performance remains with you long after your leave the theater. Just for her performance, keeping everything else aside, this movie should be watched.
  • There is no Mohanlal the star here. Just a conflicted sincere advocate. This is Anaswara's story and he steps to the side when needed and let's her take the centerstage. At the same time there are moments when he takes centerstage as only he can do.
  • The theme it deals with and they way it does and the messages that it broadcasts are important in today's world.

It's not perfect, you can think of a few loopholes, but all that can be forgiven. The long review is also because at heart am a big Mohanlal fan and even I was almost on the verge of thinking- Ok he is done and will only do mindless films. So very happy to see this
