Re: The Regional movies thread!

Watched the Telugu movie Hi Nanna on netflix with English subtitles.
Overall, liked the movie as it has its heart in the right place, along with good performances, visuals and music. The move dragged a bit towards the end and I felt the melodrama was a bit too much. The Central plot of the movie honestly felt a bit filmsy though, I feel the makers should have made it a bit more convincing. Anyways, nice watch. Rating - 7/10

This reminded me of another Telugu movie which I watched some time back with the same actress - Sita Raman. That one was a romantic musical and a very good one, loved it. Would rate it - 8/10

Guntur Karam

Rating: 1/5

No I am not posting any hate reviews, but this movie, Trivikram put up a terrible show. The first half is no less than a serial with unnecessary dragged scenes. Me and my friend wanted to leave the theatre after the first half. Second half was much more tolerable, and if the first half was directed in a similar manner as the second half, this movie would have been a good watch. The story is very weak, and direction is poor.

Special mention to the music director Thaman. This guy did no justice to the music. Tunes and songs felt very repeated.

Hatsoff to Mahesh Babu for the way he maintains his looks and himself. His grace and charming screen presence are unmatched.

Annapoorni Netflix

Watched the movie for its storyline and it didn’t disappoint at all. Of course, watching Nayantara playing the central character was an incentive but it was the linear storyline which I liked the most. The movie has now been taken down from the streaming platform which is a disgrace since the movie was one of the most sincere attempts at clean storytelling. Supporting actors played their parts well and without much drama. I hope the movie is restored and more people can see the movie and judge for themselves for its logical storyline.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Rajni - Malayalam? Tamil?

The Regional movies thread!-2.jpg

Synopsis - Siblings Naveen and Gowri find themselves entangled in a web of chaos and danger, as they try to uncover a murderer's identity.

Although it's a Malayalam movie, half of it (or even more) is in Tamil. Started off well with some horror feel, but then lost it's way in the middle. Pay a close attention and you will get the core subject. The questionable character plays a good role in this, but others are disappointing. Nothing new to the story.

Rating - 3/5 (Amazon Prime). Not bad.

Sila Nodigalil - Tamil

The Regional movies thread!-3.jpg

Synopsis - When a married cosmetic surgeon Raj Varadhan's girlfriend Maya Pillai accidentally dies of an overdose, his life takes him on an unexpected ride.

Decent story but bad execution. It definitely drags in the middle but biggest letdown was the cast. Right from the lead actors, to the supporting actors and all those who showed the face were poor. A good cast, an improved screenplay would have saved this one.

Rating - 2/5 (Amazon Prime). Avoid.

Awe! - Telugu

The Regional movies thread!-4.jpeg

Synopsis - Unusual (multiple) people tend to meet at a Restaurant and their life-changing moments take place in order to know about a single person.

This was a good watch. Sometimes the long list of characters and the screenplay can be confusing but makes up for all those with a decent story telling.

Rating - 3.5/5 (Netflix). Recommended.

Abraham Ozler (M) - 3/5

An average investigation story with some engagement in the second half.

Not sure why the writers are after stories that has an investigative officer who is going through personal trauma and pulls off a murder case.

A come back probably for Jayaram but nothing great to offer. If there is one character that Jayaram doesn't well fit in is, of a police officer and he is quite boring to watch in this film and there isn't anything signficant to have it as the title character. Big B's antogonist's would made it a better title character.

Overall an ok film, with some violence and entertainment.

Chithha - Tamil

The Regional movies thread!-chitta.jpg

I watched this movie based on the recommendations from others on this thread, and it didn't disappoint.

Some hard-hitting performances from the cast, some scenes just leave you in anguish. There is one scene between Siddarth and his friend called Vadivel in the movie, not much said, but the impact it had was deep.

What drives home the pain is the fact that's displayed in the intro - "Unfortunately, based on a true story". :( I am glad such movies are part of mainstream cinema as these help in bringing about greater awareness to such issues, most of which go unnoticed or not reported.

Rating : 4/5 - Sensitive content involved.

PARKING

Tamil, Disney Hotstar

The Regional movies thread!-screenshot_20240117153042534edit_com.android.chrome.jpg

A must see for owners passing through the daily grind of finding a safe parking place for their cars. A comi-tragic tale that stays true to its premise and paints a realistic picture of human behavior under duress.

The simple, yet important thought of where to park one's car, especially when one is living in a rented house, forces two chalk-cheese kind of individuals to converge in a battlefield of ego. What begins in an empty house ends the same way - the only difference being that the emptiness doubles up physically and enters the viewer's soul too.

Can't call this a gripping watch, but it is surely good one for the weekend.

PS: There is a fair bit of verbal and physical violence as well as blood and gore.

Loved this investigative thriller from Midhun Manuel Thomas! Jayaram has made a bold comeback in a title role - I thought his performance was exemplary! The supporting cast has also done a stellar job - Saiju Kurup, Dileesh Pothan, Jagadeesh, Anoop Menon! The story line is also quite gripping, with no lag nor a dull moment. Loved the fact that there were no songs in the movie as well!

Mammootty's intro scene threw the theatre into a frenzy - a phenomenon which we've all forgotten after the advent of OTT. Overall a brilliant watch, worth every penny & minute spent.

Natural acting by Ms Bhaskar and he did nice job. The whole fight could have been avoided if the Hero learnt to Reverse park so he doesn’t need the extra space to open the door.

Also which dealer gives car on the same day? Logic works in USA not here.

That was my exact thought!

Reverse Parking would have made the entire plot, what- a feel good drama!

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Salaar:

A technically brilliant bore!

I wonder what happened to the Prabhas from Bahubali. He looks disinterested most of the time. Or maybe the director wanted his character to be nonchalant.

On the other hand, we have sea of loud characters, and two islands in it, Prithviraj and Tinu Anand, who are more subtle.

At nearly three hours long, you expect it to be packed with events, but not really. If you ask chatGPT to summarise, I guess it would do it in a couple of sentences!

This being the first part, one might expect some world building for an imaginary setting like Khansaar, but there is very little beyond what appeared in the pre-release trailers.

Half the movie is the build-up before Prabhas's character gets involved in an action sequence, but unfortunately they fail to deliver any real goosebumps.

Part-2 is coming, but I think the makers didn't really end Part-1 at a place where there would be much anticipation for the second part. If the part called Ceasefire has so much violence, I can imagine what the rest would be like. We have been told that Prabhas and Prithviraj are friends-turned-foes, so the only thing left to know is if they turn friends again. But I am not sure if I would want to sit through another 3 hours to find out.

Thankfully I watched it in Telugu with English subtitles. So there was some subtlety to the dialogues at least. Watching in Malayalam would have been torture

Baipan Bhari Deva (Marathi)

Streaming: Hotstar

A smash hit in the recent times, revolves around the Marathi tradition. The story is not something new but given a different touch by Director Kedar Shinde. Seasoned actors like Rohini Hattangady, Vandana Gupte and Sukanya Kulkarni Mone shine out through out the movie, Rest of the cast does the supporting part well too. One time watch for sure.

Rating: 4/5

Extra Ordinary Man (telugu)

Streaming: Hotstar

A typical Telugu movie with lots of laughter, action and emotions rolled into one, at times the movie loses its plot but somehow there is something different in this film. Nitin excels in all the comic scenes and well supported by Rao Ramesh and Bhahmaji. God knows what the director sees in Sreleela to be cast in films, most of the time she does baby talk. Was weird to see Rajashekhar in the movie with that even weirder look.

Salaar - Part 1 Ceasefire (telugu)

Streaming: Netflix

The KGF director brings out another blockbuster and creates another action movie with a cinematic view. The story is good, the sets are opulent, the action scenes are fantastic and commendable, the acting is top notch. The narrative is tight and keeps the audience engaged. The stunt work is impeccable. It was good to see Prabhas speak less with dialogues and more with fists, I feel Prithiviraj was a miscast. Easwari Rao as the mother was superb. The supporting cast of Jagapathi babu, Shruti Hassan etc did the job well. The movie has done well to keep the audience expecting for more in the Part 2.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Watched Salaar, and in comparison to the Ugramm- Salaar part 1 was a big let down. Ugramm despite being made with such a low budget, was done amazingly well. Be it the background score, screenplay, the storyline everything was much better. The bigger budget however shows in Salaar. Sri Murali's swag in Ugramm to me was much better than Prabhas.
