Re: The Regional movies thread!

Aavesham : Malayalam - 4/5

As a hardcore FaFa fan, it was an amazing experience. I watched it from the third row from the front (sometimes I love being up close to the screen to avoid distractions). Everyone acted superbly, and Fahad's performance, along with Shushin's background score, is what made me fall in love with this movie. It's a must-watch in theaters. Fahad's swag is on another level. I'm planning to watch it again next weekend with my family.

The Regional movies thread!-1.jpg

Nothing new here. From start to finish, it's just a normal college love story. Exactly why I skipped the theater which I think was a very good decision. Some of the characters were way over the top like the team lead from her office, Mathew Thomas, Syam Pushkaran (he made a joker of himself) and the worst - Wanderlust (room mate). What was she smoking. There's few good comedy in between but other than that, it felt bland. Wonder how it became such a blockbuster.

Rating - 3/5 (Hotstar). One time watch.

Aavesham

A guy in an interview - "Fahadh is not an human. He's a psycho. How can somebody act like this".

I totally stand by his statement. This is his movie and he just nails it. Everyone acted well, especially Fahadh's sidekick Sajin. He was just brilliant. Wont be surprised to see him more. The kids acted well too. The fight choreography was brilliant especially the college fight and the climax. Sushin is the "go-to" guy now if you need some brilliant music and BGM. Brilliant again.
Go to some good theater with a great audio and crowd. It will be a riot. We totally enjoyed the atmosphere.

Rating - 5/5 (Must watch - Theater)

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Premalu - Malayalam

I'll differ with naveen.raju on this one. Watched this along with family and we really enjoyed it. As my daughter put it, after the rather depressing Aadujeevitham and Manjummel Boys (both of which we watched in the theatre), this light-hearted movie on OTT was a definite welcome in our eyes.

The first half breezed through quickly, while the pace slowed down in the second half, almost expected with a storyline of this sort.

There is nothing unique about such a storyline, but for me it was the cast, comedy as well as change from the overly serious movies of recent times that worked.

Trying to understand the reason behind its commercial success, I'd say it was the timing of release in 2024 with the resurgence of people flocking to theatres to watch movies, as well as the simple cast - Naslen, Mamitha and co are very much the folks next door, which helped with endearing themselves to the audience.

Rating: 4/5

Premalu

I usually stay away from romcoms, but due to all the hype I decided to give it a go. I'd say it's a time pass movie. I fail to see the reason for all the hype, or maybe I am too old for these kinds of romance. I think I am still stuck in the "In harihar nagar" days when it comes to guys wooing girls.

Coming to the comedy part, all characters are caricatures and rightfully so. But there are a few things that I don't get. Why is the story set in Hyderabad? And what's with the weird hardo of the female lead and her choice of costumes. And the jokes are of a sitcom quality (ex: stalking).

Anyway, its a decent one time watch.

Today that would definitely be the textbook definition of

Change from typical Chennai and Bengaluru settings I guess.

C'mon, the kid looked cute in that hairdo. Though am not going to say anything about choice of costumes lest be branded a millennial ammavan/90s vasantham

Yep, the jokes really are sitcom quality. Still continuing with the introvert/CBSE amul baby stereotypes.

Anyway, was a fun watch.

Though not the absolute RIOT that was AAVESHAM!!!!

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Varshangalkku Sesham (Malayalam):

For me, the movie falls in the watchable-once category. Perhaps a few scenes from the second half could be re-watched for some laughs.

There are some moments that touch the heart in the first half, but the story seemed rushed especially after the central characters reach Madras. In the second half, the movie transforms to something like Udayanaanu Thaaram and the friendship part takes a backseat.

Performance-wise, everyone has done a good job, especially Dhyan and Nivin. Pranav is getting better with each film. Music is another highlight.

After watching the movie, I thought that if the writer/director Vineeth Sreenivasan had gone deeper into the friendship part of the story and made that into a full movie, it might have been better. Then I heard Dhyan mention in an interview that the second half was initially planned with Sreenivasan and Mohanlal playing the older version of the characters. I guess it would've been a totally different seconfd half, had that happened.

Premalu | Malayalam | Hotstar (4.0/5.0)

A non-pretentious breezy comedy, and I can see why the movie was such a big hit in Kerala. The movie is not rushed at any point, and still manage to keep the audience engaged. All of the star cast did an awesome job, including a cameo by a notable screen-writer.

Once again the director (Girish A.D) showed his expertise in youth-oriented subjects. In his first (Thanneer Mathan Dinangal), the protagonists were in school, in the second (Super Sharanya) they moved to college, and here they are young adults :-)

Premalu - A very light movie with some light hearted fun and an easy watch , of course couple of characters are caricaturized.

Premalu - Malayalam 3.5/5

A light hearted Rom-Com for a breezy watch. Liked it as a one time watch. Though I liked it, I don't think I'll watch it again. Everyone did a good job with their respective roles , except Mathew's charector, which I felt was not necessary and anywhere relevant.

Placing it in Hyderabad was a welcome change, from the commonly used Bangalore and Chennai locations.

I believe it is the overall connect the movie established to the current middle-class youth.

Take the leads into consideration :

The hero played by Naslen is a typical middle-class boy, who's not perfect in any sense. He is having a dysfunctional family, but still cares for them. Unlike many movies, he's not a rebel due to his family issues but sticks to them and does whatever he can for them. Though he's not interested in his sister's relationship, he still cares. A regular guy gets rejected by lovers, but never goes to depressed maniac state (as some movies portrays so called lover boys). A responsible and independent guy who is not brilliant but tries to improve his career by trying to go to UK on his own.

The heroine played by Mamita also is a representation of present young working girl. Bold, independent and confident. She too made mistakes in past selecting her lover, but recovers well. Though she had layed out her plans and requirement for her partner, she's vulnerable towards true love (even when a guy who's matching perfectly to her requirement is readily available).

Also the Hero/Heroine's friends are having proper personalities. In general, Indian Rom-Com movies have side characters (friend's of leads) don't have much role to play, but here Naslen's friend scores in many occasions and it was refreshing to see he was not one who is dependant on the hero but it was the other way around.

Yes, I'm also a 90's kid who loves "In Harihar Nagar" kind of comedies of our time. Premalu didn't make me laugh like those movies. But I understand, the time have changed and this movie rightly connects to the present youth audiences well.

Agree totally with this review. Director Girish A.D has essentially remade his own Thanneer Mathan Dinangal in a new setting. Naslen repeats his acting from various other movies. Of the recent Malayalam movies released here in Finland, this is the only one that I couldn't watch in theatres - Thank God!

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Let me add some more fire to the ongoing blaze of Premalu.

Being a non Mallu I found the movie refreshing from the usual crime thriller ones which I have been seeing lately. Although 60% of the movie I understood the movie through the sub titles but a few scenes were really laughable. Add to that the expressions in some scenes were worth a laugh. I wouldnt take the film plot so seriously. The lead actors did their roles well and ably supported by the other cast. The only irritant was the climax which was abrupt and too easy to predict.
