Brinda - Series (Telugu)

The Regional movies thread!-1.jpg

It had the potential but was let down midway due to poor screenplay and narration. They had the suspense element till then after which it was too ordinary. Also, they could have easily avoided the last or even last 2 episodes.

Loved the BGM though. And acting was meh.

Rating - 3.5/5 (SonyLiv). Watchable.

Indian 2

Rating: 0/5

Couldn't tolerate beyond 40 minutes. Felt like a poorly executed short film. No wonder why it bombed in the theatres.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Turbo-Malayalam-Mammootty-Sony Liv

After a bunch of nuanced performances Mammootty is back with a mass entertainer. Turbo is a fairly decent watch. While it is an action entertainer, there is always an underlying thread of humor in it, like the directors older ventures like PokkiriRaja. The treatment is updated to the modern sensibilities. The central pivot of the story is the female lead played by Anjana Jayaprakash who does a good job.

There are some good action set pieces and Mammootty does them well-Especially the one in the old mall and in the bus. The role is a cakewalk for him and he pulls it off in his usual style. Raj B Shetty is the villain and does a great job, although wish there were more combination scenes with Mammootty. Bindu Panikkar plays Mammootty's mother (Ironic, she being significantly younger) but the dynamic between them gives some nice moments.

Rating:3/5

Trivia: There are several car/jeep sequences and one mostly consistent thing is everyone are always wearing seatbelts. Something you don't see happen in the movies.

Nadanna Sambhavam

The Regional movies thread!-a1.jpg

This story had no scope for a movie and wonder how the experienced actors thought this would do well. Some of the dialogues and scenes were a bit creepy. A no logic kind of movie.

Rating - 1/5 (Manorama MAX). Can skip it.

Indian 2

The Regional movies thread!-screenshot-20240814-9.46.598239am.png

I can go on forever on this one. Spoiled a classic - movie and the songs. This is the 5th or 6th movie from Shankar with the same theme and this was the worst. It was relatively fine in the beginning, but the second they show Indian - I have no words. He looks weird and nowhere similar to the original and seems to look younger.
And those “Marmam” (pressure point) action scenes - What the hell was that? BGM, songs - Oh god, I can write an essay here.
Not excited for the 3rd instalment but that was the only good thing about the movie.

Rating - Not worth it! (Can totally skip this and watch few popular troll videos on YouTube).

Golam

The Regional movies thread!-a3.jpg

This was a pretty good effort. Started off as a typical whodunit style and sort of ends it half way through. The back story is sort of common but the execution was neat. Liked the BGM as well. Except for few soapy dialogues, it was a good watch.

Rating - 4/5 (Amazon Prime). Recommend it.

Indian 2.0 (Netflix)

Not daring to put a review score, but honestly I liked it. Probably due to the expectation was so slow and thus it turned out to be a reasonable watch.

Manchitrathazhu- Theater re-release

This needs no introduction or reviews. In the recent trend of rereleasing old movies, Manichitrathazhu has been released with an upgrade to 4k and Dolby Atmos sound.

There are so many fantastic movies in Malayalam, but I am sure most people will agree that this movie is an emotion for us. Missed watching in theaters when it was released. I still don't know why. So had decided I would watch the re-release. Was prepared to go alone. Immediate family said no way you are going alone we are also coming. Then more family members joined in. Packed PVR theater in Bangalore, people saying dialogues in advance, claps for a lot of scenes. Was a fantastic experience.

The picture has been upgraded fairly well, the climax scenes with Shobhana's closeup stand out in the glory of that fantastic performance. Sound was well done. Downside, the picture was in 4:3 format in the screen I watched. A lot is said about the Nagavalli track and performances, but this rewatch reminded how natural the comedy elements were and how Innocent KPACLalitha Pappu made it work beautifully. These legends are no more with us, but it was great to see them on big screen again along with Thilakan and Nedumudivenu.

Also was great to watch Mohanlal during his peak phase. Naturally transitioning between being silly and comic to becoming serious as the gravity of the situation grows on him.

Huge round of applause at the end of the film. I had hoped there would be atleast 3-4 shows in Bangalore, turns out due to the demand, now there are 25-30 shows in Bangalore with most going full. My nieces and friends who are year 2000+ kids are also planning to go watch.

As I said in the beginning, this one is definitely an emotion

Thanks for introducing this channel to us. I ended up watching a number of roast videos from the same creator. Watch this review/roast of an unofficial Telugu remake of Indian 1. As much as it is hilarious, it highlights some vulgarities that pass off as entertainment in Telugu movies.

I wanted to watch this but all major multiplexes were sold out.

Heard few negatives about the movie as well - Climax BGM was changed so it lacked the original feel and picture lacked quality for long shots. Of course these were online reviews and I take it with a pinch of salt.

Will try next weekend to watch this.

Climax BGM was not changed but looks like stuff was added. Did not notice that much of a difference, but maybe I need to revisit the original. Picture quality in long shots was an issue. Especially when there is both a near and far focus. The far focus was blurred.

The picture upgradation was definitely not as good as I expected. But again , it is a 31 year old print which I read was also damaged. So some leeway there.

Saw Aattam this weekend on Prime Video.

The Regional movies thread!-aattam_film_poster.jpeg

I had heard good reviews about the movie, but when it won 3 National Film Awards (for best film, best screenplay and best editing) it had me intrigued. Brilliant movie that perhaps only the Malayalam film industry can come up with. The story telling is nuanced, realistic and down-to-earth. Stays away from the usual pitfalls - no over-the-top moments, does not get preachy, has no forced song & dance sequences. It is hard to believe that it is a debut direction. Kudos to the filmmaker. Starts of as a slow boil, takes some time to set context, but the second half is gripping, and the climax leaves you speechless.

Must watch.

Streams on Amazon Prime.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Nunakuzhi-Malayalam-Basil Joseph, Jeethu Joseph

Jeethu Joseph stepping away from his thriller mode to do a comedy. A situational comedy with a lot of characters and confusion created by a lot of lies being told. Little like Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil or the old time Priyadarsan comedies.

Overall a mixed bag. On the plus side, it keeps a light tone through out, performances are good especially from veterans like Baiju and Sidique who gets to do a proper comedy role after a while. Basil as usual is in top form, Grace Antony also does well. Because of these performances, several sequences work out very well and are hilarious. Some of them miss the mark.

Overall still a fun pass time watch due to the elements that work out well.
