Mathu Vadalara 1 and 2 - Telugu

The Regional movies thread!-screenshot-20241015-9.58.158239am.png

Although both movies were pretty funny, I found the first one to be better. You feel the drag in the second movie. But definitely watchable. Loved the lead actors too.

Part 1 - Amazon Prime
Part 2 - Netflix

Rating - 3.75/5. Recommended

Athomugam - Tamil

The Regional movies thread!-3.jpg

A decent thriller but too many twists. Acting was decent.

Rating - 3/5. Watchable. Available on Amazon Prime for rent.

Level Cross - Malayalam

The Regional movies thread!-4.jpg

Not everyone's cup of tea but I kind of liked it. Starts off slow then picks up. Attention to detail is pretty impressive and there are many hidden clues/meaning. Good selection of movies by Asif recently.

Rating - 3.5/5. Recommended. Available on Amazon Prime.

Bougainvillea

The Regional movies thread!-1.jpg

Slow paced thriller with the usual Amal Neerad touch. Brilliant shots with brilliant BGM (Sushin nailed it yet again) to match it. Amal succeeds in building the suspense even though first half is a bit slow. Jyothirmayi nailed it with an awesome comeback supported by Kunchacko's brilliant performance which is something different from his usual roles. I thought Fahadh and Sharaf was wasted in this although they did their bit.

Rating - 3.75/5. Recommended. OTT will be fine as well.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Bharathanatyam - (M) - Prime - 3.5/5

Nice, feel good family movie with a bit of humour. Good watch on OTT and OTT is good enough.

I think it failed in theatres primarily because of the casting. Though all the artists did a good job including Saiju Kurup, it didn't get an attention. Things would have been different if the lead character was say Basil.

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Paradise (Malayalam) (2023, Prime)
This movie starts as couple's honeymoon trip to SriLanka, but as movie progresses starts to reveal multiple human character flaws. With references to different versions of Ramayana the movie showcases, how few humans can loose empathy on certain difficult situations.
4.2/5:Might be difficult to watch but its really a good one.

Laughing Buddha (Kannada) (2024, Prime)
This is a comedy genre movie about the story of a police head constable who has his own way of getting truth out of criminal's mouth. Movie showcases about the plight of police officials and their difficult life both professional and personal in a lighter way.
4.0/5:An easy and good watch.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Caught up Meiyazhagan and Lubber Pandhu on theater this month.

Meiyazhagan

96 director and promo set the tone that its going to be a slow burner. It is a conversation based movie which has a philosophical undertone. Bit like Good Will Hunting, but on a vastly different subject. I liked it. May not be everyone's cup of tea.

Lubber Pandhu

This movie is proof, how an ordinary story can be taken and made interesting by clever dialogue writing and smart placement of songs. It was so much fun, I saw it 2 times in theater.

Its a cricket based story, but unlike Blue Star which was more game oriented, this focuses more on family drama with a cricket backdrop.

The movie seems to be a sleeper hit purely by word of mouth. I saw the second attempt on 13th with a packed theater and there are still good number of shows running this weekend (which is week 5) in Madras, which is a rarity these days

That's pretty bad word of mouth from a fellow millennial brought up as a thalaivar fan. I've lost my inspiration since Chandramukhi and have gone several weeks post release.

Now thinking whether to go Vettaiyan or Wild Robot (which has got glowing feedback from a colleague).

Vaazhai - Tamil
Hotstar

A slow movie with an impactful climax. Within 10 minutes of watching the movie in Hindi, I had to change to its original Tamil audio. Absolutely loved the song Thenkizhakku.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Pani - M - 4/5

Joju George lead cast movies usually never dissapoints and when he directs a movie, that means he is serious about it. This is one such movie where he has crafted it well. Engaging film, bit of violence and the highlight is the Villain/s who keeps the hero and audience at the edge of the seat. If you have been following the Malayalam TV series "Thatteem Mutteem", go watch to see how Aadhi has transformed.

Meiyazhagan - Tamil - Drama - Netflix : 4.5/5

The Regional movies thread!-meiyazhagan1729844838752.jpg

A warm feelgood drama about a man's (played by Aravind Swami) experiences and encounters with his nostalgia during a visit to his native village after 22 years.

Even though it was set in rural Tamilnadu, it will evoke many nostalgic memories in every viewers heart (especially 80's - 2000's kids).

There are some seriously heart touching moments, especially the one, when Karthi's character explains how a small unplanned act from Aravind Swami's character affected his whole life in a positive way and made him the man he is now. Just brilliant.

There were enough scope to go overboard with sentiments, but the writer & director perfectly balances without being melodramatic.

Beautifully acted by Aravind Swami & Karthi. Supported well by others.

Highly recommended

Re: The Regional movies thread!

^^ I watched this movie yesterday and loved every bit of it. However I noticed that the movie was set in 2016 and they have used quite a few objects from the past decade or two - 2000 rupee notes, old Nokia phones (including an N series one), old cars, buses and more. I wondered why and checked if the movie was shot earlier and then deferred but NO. It was shot in 2023 only.

The director is obsessed with the years 1996 and 2018. That was the setting in his debut movie 96. The same years make a recurrence here too.

I don't remember cars from this movie, but buses weren't out of place.

I remember a gen 1 Honda City and a Unicorn bike, apart from a Kinetic Honda and Bullet STD. Not the usual automobile we see today. A prefacelift Fortuner was the only recent vehicle I noticed. The story didn't demand a 6-8 yr old time frame and hence, my curiosity.

True, but I thought, since the story is set predominantly in a rural area those sort of vehicles are what would be there. During my motorcycle trips to tier-2 cities or less known villages, I have mostly seen Ambassadors, TVS XLs, Kinetic Hondas and the likes. So it could have been a coincidence that no modern automobile was seen on screen.

But the 2016 angle on mobile phones was just to keep the selfie/photo taking culture we have today away from disturbing the plot.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

I watched Meiyazhagan over the weekend. For the first time, I am not sure how to express my reaction to a movie. Usually, I like it, or I don't like it, or I just consider it a time pass. But I am not able to place this movie anywhere.

Maybe it was the hype or the expectation after 96.

I was blessed enough to be born and brought up in a village; hence, I could relate to so many characters, subplots, and small typical village traits shown in the movie. As with 96, the director has not been overly dramatic in any scene. I got many glimpses of myself and my friends in the character played by Karthi.

However, I felt there was a lag in the movie. Maybe I should have watched it in the theatre with absolute concentration. The movie was only showcased for about 10 days in my city and I had hectic work schedules that did not allow me to watch it in the theatre.

I feel 96 was a once-in-a-lifetime type of movie. I was never moved by the societal notion of a "failed love" before 96. This movie did not bring in that kind of reaction in me.

It seems this movie has not made enough money for distributors. Producers will get money due to satellite/OTT/remake rights and all but the lifeline of any industry are the distributors and exhibitors. I regret not making time to watch it in the theatre.

PS: I have written this much but I am still not able to place the movie. Maybe some movies are beyond any scale of analysis.

These are vastly different movies.

96 is a direct movie where you see the emotions told and untold happen on the screen.

Meiyazhagan isn't that way. It is a philosophical movie that speaks to the protagonist Arul. The way he is defensive before, how the trip alters his life and those around him are all left to interpretation. The Arul-Potato relationship is like the Will-Sean of Good Will Hunting. Whether it speaks to you, you can only decide

This is unusual for Tamil cinema in general, since we usually get spoonfed all the time. Maharaja did its bit, by not having Nungambakkam 730 pm, Tambaram 1030 pm sort of cards

Of course, it is different. But any movie irrespective of genre should be able to invoke some sort of reaction is what I meant.

Lucky for us Malayalees, we have never felt that problem. Maybe this is also a factor which makes me not call this a "w.o.w" movie.
