Amaran (tamil)

Streaming: Netflix

One of the good movies of Sivakartikeyan where he carries the entire film on his shoulders and equally supported well by Sai Pallavi. The movie is too lengthy should have been shortened by atleast 30 or 40 odd mins. At times it was confusing to hear the dialogues in Malayalam and Tamil with both the lead pair alternatively speaking the other language than their own. One time watch for sure.

Brother- Tamil- Zee5- Jayam Ravi, Priyanka Mohan, Bhumika Chawla, Natty, Achyuth Kumar

Rating 2/5

Forced comedy, shitty storyline, unwanted characters(Rao Ramesh, Saranya Ponvannan)

-As usual, Jayam Ravi gives his 100% yet cannot movie is bad due to crappy storyline
-Welcome Back, Bhumika Chawla! but her character impact/dialogues/screen presence simply fades away. While her character is responsible for the plot twist, the focus shift entirely on Rao Ramesh
-Priyanka Mohan is wasted and scenes are created just for show her on screen
-VTV Ganesh, Natty, Saranya Ponvannan, Achyuth Kumar are not utilized to even 50% of their potential
-"Makkamishi" is a watchable song due to tamil rap + Jayam Ravi Dance + Good VFX

Lucky Baskhar on Netflix.

Enjoyable to watch with family.

Dulquer Salman has done a nice job. The plot revolves around the erstwhile license raj and the eventual Harshad Mehta stock market scandal.

Bougainvillea (Malayalam)

Streaming: Sony Liv

I simply love the Malayalam thriller movies as they slowly build up the suspense and the climax is something one would not have imagined at all. This movie also lives up to the reputation of a phycological thriller, movie starts slow and then the twists and turns tend to keep you hooked. Kunchako Boban excels and manages to carry the movie, Jyothirmayi was superb as well. Again Fahad Faasil failed to impress with a miniscule role, he needs a meaty role now. Recommend the movie to all who enjoy this genre.

Bougainvillea - Malayalam

The Regional movies thread!-bougainvillea.jpg

I must say I was waiting for this one on OTT. This one gets interesting right from the first scene following which it slows down a bit to set the tone and then kicks up a gear or two. leading to an exciting finish.

I did predict part of the story, however the way it was unraveled keeps you hooked, not to forget the performances from the cast. This one lives up to the thriller genre and while the story may not be entirely original, it does entertain.

Watched Marco Malayalam (A)

I went to watch a movie alone after a long time. People who watched on the first day warned me not to take family along and they are right. It is the most violent Indian movie I ever watched. Predictable story, average dialogues, and average first half. Second half is fast and takes a violent turn after the arrival of the main villain. They end with a hint for a sequel. If this is the result after the censor cut, I can't even imagine the original version.

2.5/5

Gumasthan, Malayalam : Amazon Prime

Watched this today. Murder mystery. The way the 'clerk's' character gets built up is pretty interesting. Whilst I loved the movie, I felt it had a very abrupt ending. Perhaps a sequel is on its way.

3/5.

Marco - Malayalam - Action

The Regional movies thread!-images-93.jpeg

Watched after seeing all the positive reviews in social media. Many warned about the violence and they were right. It's the most violent movie I've seen from India Pre climax block had too much of violence which was something I never thought of seeing in an Indian movie.
Definitely not for weak hearted and kids.

It's a basic revenge story set in a cartel backdrop. Nothing to write about the story, acting or dialogues. This movie all about fight, blood & gore.

Unni Mukundan was mentioning about his 7 year long break from action genre and this movie will satisfy himself and his fans. Boy did he deliver! Superb effort from him.

Main positives -
  • Terrific action choreography - The staircase fight scene can hold its own to any internation action movie scenes.
Also the interval fight sequence - Pushpa can take a note of how to fight with hands tied.
  • Superb performance (action) by Unni Mukundan - he got the swag and physique to pull off the larger than life image.
  • Cinematography - Very nice camera work, color grading and asthetic. Suits the movie very well
  • BGM - elevates the action/mass scenes. But sometimes I felt it's overused a bit.

Negatives -
  • Lags in the first half
  • No emotional connection to any characters. In Kill, we felt the empathy towards the hero. But here we don't feel anything such. Some of the characters felt unnecessary too.
  • Dialogues are average except a few.

As violent action movie - 4.5/5
As an entertainment movie - 3/5

Movie: UI
Language: Kannada
Director / Actor: Upendra

Saw UI yesterday at PVR Forum South in Bangalore.

The Film starts off in typical Uppi style of narration right from some zoom shots into the censor certificate itself and explaining the title of the film and the category of the film

Post that there is a poster calling out that "If you are intelligent walk out of the Cinema Hall"

The Regional movies thread!-1734883186159.jpg

Upendra has focused on storytelling about the democratic system and how if we do not wake up where it would take us eventually. How politicians are distracting and dividing people over Religion, Caste etc. and other distractions that people are living in which includes Mobile, Social Media etc.
This track is easy to follow and comprehend.

Also in narration is a track on the inner self, focusing and realization within - which is picturized with a lot of darkness. This portion covers the first Silent teaser which was released first. This track requires a second viewing possibly to fully understand (Will maybe reserve the second viewing for the OTT Release)

The heroine angle seems like an odd track which felt out of place to me and the song placements are also weird. Overall, I would say Upendra has mellowed down - not much controversial dialogues or long monologues like in his earlier movies.

I would say a good watch for people who have liked his style of narration earlier. For the others - they may be wondering what type of screenplay is this...

Lot of intelligent, crazy and very unique ideas along the way - don't want to reveal as that would take away the fun of watching it.
The length of the movie is 2hr 12m - I think they have done a good job by not extending it further. Could have been further reduced without the heroine angle and some songs.

Also, as before - I am sure there will be polarized views on the film and that's how people react to this type of storytelling. Upendra himself called out in his interviews that even his earlier film "A" was called out by the Censor Board as "Unfit for Certification"

Would rate it 3.5/5 stars.

Viduthalai-2

A sequel that tries too many things. And would have been worth releasing an uncut version to make sense. Its obvious that this is a cut/censored version where many scenes jump out of context.

The kind of movie that is tailormade for Vijay Sethupathi more than anything else.

Songs don't stick, BGM is wonderful though.

I liked the ending, which made it a sequel worth watching.

Never understood why A certificate when you are blurring out all bloody scenes and beeping out all the swearing anyway.

Mr. Upendra is, when it comes to films, language-agnostic. That is to say that knowing or not knowing Kannada has nothing to do with understanding his films. Suspension of disbelief is a sine qua non for empathizing with his presentations. You will of course miss some punches that only a fair knowledge of Kannada can provide. Otherwise, if you have two odd hours to spare and are not averse to shelling out some dough, have a go at UI.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Rifle club - (M) - 3.5/5

Malayalam writers have no dearth of storyline’s and just pulls out great scripts out of a hat. One another unique theme and entertainment. Though a small role, Vijayaraghavan’s presence is a USP these days. First time seeing Dileesh Pothan really stealing the show. Overall a good one.

Wanted to actually see Marco during the weekend, but the reviews about horrifying violence held me back and settled with Rifle club which did the due diligence.
