We watched it this evening and throroughtly enjoyed it. It’s different and may not be to everyone’s taste but the humour and entertainment is brilliant.

With you on this! Such a boring movie.

All the brilliance and so called intellectual treatment is bunch of non sense. I'm not sure what all these so called movie buffs are smoking while explaining 'flickering lights represent the hope of the character'.

The 'Award Cinema's' of yester years used to be enjoyable most of the time and relatable and simple. But now a days these are trying too hard to be 'intellectual'.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Watched 'Pani' and enjoyed it. I'll catch 'Rifleclub' tomorrow.

And what on earth is the noise and fame about 'all we imagine as light'. Couldn't even watch a half hour. Don't think I'll be able to complete that.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Watched Sookshmadarshini a few days ago. A decent crime thriller, with all round great performances especially from Nazria. Compared to other run-of-the-mill investigative films like Anveshippin Kandetthum this one is a fresh take on crime investigation as the "detective" is a nosey housewife next door. On the negatives, the final act was unnecessary, but I guess they wanted a "thrilling climax" to satisfy the regular crowd.

Just a couple of days before, I had watched CI Ramachandran which although was an engaging investigation film, lacked soul. We don't feel empathy towards the victim so we really stop caring after some time.

Compare these films to the GOAT of all Malayalam investigation films, Oru CBI Diarykkurippu, almost half of the film is spent on getting the viewers to know and identify with the characters, hence the viewers participate by trying to find (guess) the killer. At the end we neither feels any satisfaction or thrill when the killer is found.

While Shajon was excellent as the retired policeman in the movie, his persona was unlike what we had seen in his recent police roles, and hence the characterization felt very artificial. Leading characters need not be shown as nice people. It would have been more interesting if it was Constable Sahadevan (of Drishyam) instead of CI Ramachandran who was doing the investigation.

Yes, watched on Friday night and absolutely loved it

I did not have much expectations, but a good watch. Overdose of violence is a norm now, but even then the performances and the overall pace was really good.

True. Paisa Vasool movie.

Really enjoyed it. Malayalam cinema shows it does not need the so called STAR's for the film to work. Excellent acting by Dileesh Pothan, Suresh Krishna, Surabhi and Vijayaraghavan. Really surprised to see the main villain of RDX, Vishnu Agastya, showing his comic flair in the movie.

What the heck, liked all the characters. Anurag Kashyap was excellent. I even liked his Malayalam dialogue delivery. The call Secretary Avaran still rings.

How could you forget HanumanKind? His presence and swag were absolutely fantastic, especially in theaters. I think Surabhi didn’t have much to perform in the movie.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Got to catch up with 3 popular movies over the weekend, almost a record for me, IIRC.

RIFLE CLUB - Malayalam

The Regional movies thread!-rifleclub.jpg

I'd seen many reviews about this here on this thread and so went in with high hopes, and the movie sure delivered!
The movie starts out rather run-of-the-mill but after the intro to the location from where the movie derives it's name, it was game on!

Get ready for an action packed adventure, with lots of humour. I loved Anurag Kashyap's character and that's not taking away anything from the rest of the cast including most notably Dileesh Pothan.

I'd recommend watching this without trying to make too much sense of it all and you wont be disappointed.

Rating: 4/5

PANI - Malayalam

The Regional movies thread!-pani.jpeg

Joju chettan is back as his typical self in a role that he does effortlessly. Considering that he himself wrote and directed the movie, he played to his strengths. It's arguable that there is nothing brilliant about this movie however I like how Sagar Surya and Junaiz were given a good chance to flex their respective roles. As my wife and I remarked, this definitely made the movie interesting.

For the car enthusiasts, the movie delivers with cars from Joju's collection including his M5 and Defender (from what I recall). Joju is seen driving around a lot in the movie which also comes from his love for cars, as I see it.

Rating: 3.5/5

SOOKSHMADARSHINI - Malayalam

The Regional movies thread!-sookshmadarshini.jpeg

Touted as a mystery thriller this one started out slow and then kicked into gear as it progressed. If you've watched some hit TV shows, you can see where this one's going but kudos to them for keeping you guessing.

Nazriya and Basil are their usual selves but I found the supporting cast who did well to make their characters worth remembering. There are some light moments in the movie which help keep you entertained, making it an overall decent watch.

Rifle club

The Regional movies thread!-1.jpg

Definitely should have watched in the theater. Not to everyone’s taste but I liked it. Anurag and Dileesh nailed it and others supported as well. Some were wasted (Vani Vishwanath, Darshana etc). Loved the BGM as well. Definite theater watch.

Rating - 4/5 (Netflix). Highly recommended.

Anand Sreebala

The Regional movies thread!-2.jpg

Pretty decent crime thriller with good acting overall. Sort of had multiple twists so we will keep guessing till the end.

Rating 3/5 (Amazon prime). Watchable

I am kathalan

The Regional movies thread!-3.jpg

Reminds me of “Salala Mobiles” but this was pretty well executed with more detailed technical insights. Good acting by Nasleen, Dileesh and others but not sure of the lead female. It was a decent movie.

Rating - 3/5 (Manorama Max). Watchable

Pani

The Regional movies thread!-4.jpg

I wasn’t really keen on this when the trailer was released. Not really fond of full on action movies that involves a lot of fight sequences. Heard decent reviews when it was released and wanted to catch the cars they showcased.
Story line was like any other revenge genre but what I loved was the 2 boys who portrayed the negative characters. They were pretty amazing with quite natural acting. Joju and his partners supported him as well. And like everyone else pointed out, nice cars which are all owned by Joju.

Rating -3.5/5 (SonyLiv). Recommended.

Family Padam

The Regional movies thread!-5.jpg

Think there was another movie with similar storyline. It couldn’t have been a lot better provided it had better editing and trimmed the movie a bit. Felt the movie to be long been though runtime was decent.
Nothing special here.

Rating - 2.5/5 (Aha). Watchable but won’t regret if you skip.

I literally opened this thread to write exactly the same.
This would have been an awesome experience on a bigger screen.

If not for the huge amount of violence and gore, I would have put it on the projector in my home and watched with the family.

Super entertainer.

Rifle Club - Malayalam - Netflix - 2.5/5

Decent movie, one time watchable. Most of the actors have nothing to do. Hanumankind was very good, they could have added some more elements to his character. Anurag, Dileesh, and Vijayaraghavan were very good too. All others were meh..

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Oru Jathi Jathakam - 3/5

A full and full Vineeth Sreenivasan film who just nails it down with his superb acting. That was a 10x Sreenivasan acting he pulled it out as the movie is throughout dialogue humour and he is there on the screen 99% of the movie length.

A lots of humour, to be seen particularly with a full crowd as you need to forget everything and just laugh it out openly. So when it comes to OTT, the essence may dilute. So if watching, watch it now in theatre.

Though off late Malayalam movies are praised with its content and storyline, the music department is a let down these days, and the same with this movie as well.

Overall, a good fun movie, with a unique and one liner theme, but the script and dialogues are well detailed out. It is simply a Vineeth movie. An alternate choice would have been Basil, but no one else will fit the bill.

I always like a good thriller and this was quite a decent thriller. For a change it was good to see Jayaram playing a serious role. Audience have always associated Jayaram with fun/comedy roles. I would definitely suggest this as a "One time" time pass movie for fans of thriller genre.

Thank you for this one. I had not decided on watching it and did it purely based on your review.

It was quite a decent one without nitpicking so much. I agree with the rating.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Movie: Dominic and the ladies purse.

A slow paced comical style detective movie. Movie begins only by second half.
Can skip theater and wait for OTT release, unless you are a Mammooty fan.
No gadgets or exotics shown in the entire movie.
