Re: The Regional movies thread!

I watched Kutumbasthan and Love under construction last weekend, both these movies had a realistic storyline and decent watch for a family audience.

Rekhachitram (Malayalam)

Streaming: Sony Liv

Another classic Who dunit genre movie from Malayalam film fraternity and I loved the story telling. The way the plot was built through out the movie was great. The story was gripping, the climax was again something which I had not expected. Asif played his role as usual with aplomb. Anaswara did not have any major role but gave her best.

Rating: 3.5/5

Max (Kannada)

Streaming: Zee

I found the movie surprisingly to be very good. Great acting by Sudeep Kiccha and ably supported by rest of the cast. The story was fast and the movie has decent action and drama. Songs were really not needed but they are there I guess for mass appeal. No specific heroine makes the movie stick to the plot. Lot of Tamil actors presence makes me wonder why Kannada actors were not chosen. All in all a good movie and recommend to all.

Rating: 4/5

Not as good as his previous movies like Nayattu, Pada etc but it was a good watch. Everyone acted pretty well, BGM was good but loved the cinematography. You wouldn't notice it, but it pulled off some pretty amazing shots, especially the fight inside the hospital. The topic is a bit sensitive and definitely not recommended for children.

Rating - 3.5/5 (Recommended - A decent watch). Currently in theater.
Bang on on the flow and the cinematography. Except for one major plot hole(don't know if i missed it) the movie was fluid. The guy who played Christie and the lady who played Anna acted impressively while the rest of the antagonist crew did a fair job.

I'd actually rate it 4-4.5 out of 5.

It is not a secret that Sudeep movies have been shot in Chennai for the past few years; this has not gone well with the local film production staff. But MAX was a wholesome entertainer.

Jilabi (Marathi)

Streaming: Amazon prime

Marathi film industry I guess is going through its worst time with no good films and this one is no exception either. Expected a good thriller and turned out to be a damp squib. Poor Screenplay, over acting by known actors like Prasad Oak, Swapnil Joshi and unrequired hypeing in terms of BGM at scenes makes this movie a forgettable one. A royal snoozefest and can be totally avoided.

Narayaneente Moonnaanmakkal

The Regional movies thread!-1.jpg

This was one weird movie. Expected some comedy but it was like an art drama. Joju and Suraj acted well, but other than that it was a disaster.
Rating - 1/5 (Amazon Prime). Can be avoided.

Kudumbasthan

The Regional movies thread!-screenshot-20250317-9.01.008239am.png

This was a surprise. Never expected this to be this good. Although first half was really good, they mellowed down the second half. Everyone acted really well and this definitely is a family entertainer.
Rating - 4.5/5 (Zee5). Highly recommended.

Neela Nira Sooriyan

The Regional movies thread!-3.jpg

Pretty straight forward movie with a sensitive topic. Decent acting by the lead. Definitely not to everyone’s taste and can be slow.
Rating - 3/5 (aha). Can be watched.

Ponman

The Regional movies thread!-4.jpg

Had very high expectation so was a bit disappointed. Not saying it was bad, but expected a lot more comedy. It was kind of serious with little bit of humor thrown in. Brilliant acting by Basil, well supported by Sajin and others.
Rating - 3.5/5 (Hotstar). Recommended.

Ouseppinte Osyath

The Regional movies thread!-screenshot-20250317-9.03.508239am.png

This didnt have many takers as many multiplexes screened only a single show and that too in the smallest screen. Had pretty good ratings and didnt want miss Vijayaraghavan doing a senior character’s role. Well, he didnt disappoint but it was Dileesh and Shajohn who excelled. They were brilliant and so was the location. But that was just it. Story was pretty straight with expected ending and it was definitely a slow burner.
Rating - 3.5/5 (Theater). Definitely not a theater watch. Recommended on OTT.

Thrayam (Amazon Prime) - Stopped after 10 mins. Super bad acting and one of worst editing skills that I have seen.

Last week while scrolling through movies, this one came up and decided to give a skip based on your comments last week. After finding nothing else to watch, decided to give a try but turned out to be okay may be due to my expectations were very low and it had some realism. The pace was bit slow for everyone’s liking.

A very sweet and close to heart kind of movie.

I think every "Family Man" kind of relates to this character.

Where its a bit of shuffle every month between all the expected and unexpected expenses that keep popping up.

I understand the total mixed reviews coming out – a total slow burner, coupled with an unconventional/controversial storyline. But overall I like way the movie was designed (almost had an MT touch to it), and brilliant performances by all the actors.

I found Moonnaanmakkal a compelling watch. The movie is a slice of life - so there are no perfect resolutions, no putting a bow on it and calling it a happy ending. Parental/sibling relationships are only deified or glorified in our cinema, whereas this movie is a more accurate depiction of how it works in real life, in my opinion.

As for the controversial part, frankly speaking I found it quite natural. Just that most people do not act on such impulses/fantasies, and go on with their usual lives.

I agree with this perspective, both the relationships as well as the controversial part.

The movie is slow and to me, a bit unpredictable too, which keeps interest.

Officer on Duty (Malayalam)

Streaming: Netflix

What started as a thriller movie soon turned out to be an ordinary revenge saga. I expected a gripping story plot but didnt get one. I thought Kunchako Boban will deliver another different performance like Bouginvilla but he succeeded only partly. Ably supported by Priyamani and veteran Jagadish, the movie held on till the last. The fight scenes were over the top, the climax could have been something different. One time watch maybe.

I have to agree on this. The movie was a total slice of life and I loved the way everyone acted. The only person I thought was a bit (and I do mean a bit) off was the son. Seemed to overact - however, that could also be attributed to his need to ‘fit in’ to the Kerala environment. Agree completely on the controversial part actually being quite natural in real life and beautifully depicted by the two actors in reel life!

Overall, was a lovely movie.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Looks like the king of the Malayalam Box Office-Mohanlal is back with a bang. Insane response to Empuraan with still a week to go. The trailer looks good and expecting Prithviraj to deliver. The production and distribution houses are leaving no stone unturned to make it a massive release across the world.

Opened BookMyShow for Bangalore and was shocked to see the number of shows being charted and how quickly they are filling up.
