Re: The Regional movies thread!

Caught up 3 malayalam movies on Amazon Prime recently.

ED (Extra Decent)
Good premise but I felt that the execution left a lot to be desired. Promoted as a dark comedy, but it lacks the nuance and subtelty that is needed to elevate a movie of this genre. Couldn't help draw some parallels with FaFa's Joji and that only helped to lower the experience. Would recommend only if you have time to kill.

Am. Ah
Great location and good acting but it almost felt like some crucial bits in the middle were missed. I don't know if it's an issue with the version on Prime but they had a cliffhanger intermission which was not pursued post that. Recommendation same as above.

I am Kathalan
Best of the lot for me. Intresting take on hacking where the hacker is no anti social evil genius but an average guy exploiting very real life like security lapses. Felt that the makers did a good job of explaining technology to a lay person. However, the ending was a bit rushed and the main protagonist not going through a convincing redemption arc felt like a cop out. It's a very short movie that i would recommend to anyone interested in tech.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Watched Hit : The third case in theaters last week. I was told that it is the third movie in a franchise. Looked up the IMDB score and it was a solid 7.5. So far so good.

The first half of the movie was quite good (if you exclude the cringeworthy romance track) and the storyline managed to keep the audience guessing. Halfway through was when it rapidly started going south. In a swift monologue the hero of the movies narrates the whole mystery surrounding the story as if he imagined it out of thin air. No explanation on how he figured it out and stuff.

But we were wrong. It would be much later that you realize that they were only setting the stage for something more sinister. Something so very lame and laughworthy. What you witness for the next hour or so is a bunch of action sequences that would put decade old video games to shame. And from the middle of nowhere the romance track returns and we yearn for a relief in the lines of what Ghajini did to the heroine in that movie. The latter half of the movie is all violence and gore and I did close my eyes for several minutes at a time to escape the torture.

I dunno why they make trash movies like this, and it surprises me that the majority in the country enjoys such lame movies.

Well, sorry for the rant. Go watch the movie for a heavy dose of Indian style entertainment. Peace.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Did anyone here feel that the sound was too loud for Thudarum (Malayalam)? I watched both in Chennai and Thiruvalla, and on both occasions my ears are paining. Never experienced this watching any movie so far. My parents felt same too.

It could be with the cinema hall as well. I watched the movie first in Golden Village cinema here in Singapore, and the sound quality was really good. In comparison, the second theater was a smaller one, and it was just pumped up volume.

Thought it was something with the theatre setup.

Too much boomy bassy sound.

I was surprised it was same at both theatres. Might be the audio was set up that way based on how the movie team wanted it to be.
The sound was so overpowering that the other aspects of the movie could not be enjoyed.

The director talks about it in the interview below. Raises the point on how very few theaters have good, well calibrated sound systems and how in my theaters they visited, they had to go speak to the theater management to make adjustments. For many of them better sound just means louder sound. I think Thudarum had a very nuanced background score with multiple elements.

Watch from 1:19:00

Re: The Regional movies thread!

No offence to anyone, but this thread should be renamed Malayalam movies thread instead of Regional movies thread . Seems like Mollywood is the most active movie industry currently.

On another note, during my graduate school days in the US, a very close and great Malayali friend of mine who also happens to be one of the smartest guys I know, a IIT-Kharagpur graduate, was a movie buff who would literally love every movie he watched and he watched a lot of movies. He found something to enjoy in every movie no matter how crappy the movie was for the rest of us. Movies were one thing that brought the innocence out of him each and every time.

Probably because the people who post regularly in this thread are primarily Malayalam movie watchers. I am always on the lookout for good recommendations in any language.

A few years ago, the Telugu and Tamil film industries were the most active from the southern regions. My friends during my engineering days were always clued in to the idlebrain website, reading and lapping up every tidbit of info on movies, stars and so on.

No language barrier for me. I watch all languages - not just regional but also international.

Maranamass - Malayalam

The Regional movies thread!-maranamass.jpeg

Not sure if this is everyone's cup of tea, but I really enjoyed this one. Started out brilliant, and then lost steam midway through the movie from where parts of it felt really dragged out.

I love how Basil Joseph goes all out to take digs at the movie industry and social media trends and somehow it felt quite fitting.

This one was good as a timepass attempt, just don't expect much in terms of logic or a grand storyline.

Rating: 3/5

You beat me to the review of the movie as I was procrastinating whether to post or not.
Malayalam movies continue to amaze me with a few exceptions. This movie was a really good one. I found the movie taking off after 30 mins, the funny part is the plot is already made clear well at the start of the movie. The treatment given to the rest of the story is where one can enjoy. Basil was good in his acting so were the other supporting cast, somehow couldn't digest his looks in the movie. Over all an enoyable one and would recommend for sure.

Rating as some as Mod.
