Re: The Regional movies thread!

Oru Kuprasidha Payyan-Malayalam- Tovino Thomas, Nimisha Sajayan: A crime/courtroom drama where the hero is framed for a murder since the police were under pressure to find the culprits. 2nd half is a court room drama where a court appointed newbie lawyer played by Nimisha, goes up against a famous public prosecutor played by Nedumudi Venu.

Overall, although nothing path breaking in the movie, was a good watch.

It would have been good as a short film instead of a full length feature film.

+1 Glad to know that I am not the only one who felt so. The BGM is good, but do not know how it was a hit.

I too felt it was a drag at places. The songs are well placed without being intrusive but it gets boring to watch the lead actors walking in slo-mo for the entire duration of the song. I felt that the acting by the lead pair and even the actors who performed the lead in their school days have done a very good job portraying the roles. The mannerisms are really good but the story is very slow moving and may not be to everyone's liking.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Saw Bucket List, a Marathi movie.

Despite a stellar cast (Madhuri Dixit, Sumit Raghavan and other mainstays of Marathi cinema) and a reasonably good script, the cinematography and supporting cast is downright terrible.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Any good recommendations of regional movies from south in NetFlix?

I kinda liked 'The painted house' which is banned in India and available elsewhere. Nice act, tight script and good photography. 4/5.

Any particular language. Netflix has a good collection of Malayalam movies. When I say good, not in the number of titles which is not much, but most movies available are good ones.

I like movies that move at a slow pace, but that is not the real issue with '96. The movie wastes time on unnecessary stuff, just because it feels obligated to be 2.5 hours long.

To start, the actual story does not start until 30 mins. It wastes time creating a prelude and wanders with it just to show us how the reunion got organized. What bearing does it have on the story? None.

Then, the flashbacks. Why do you need so long shots to establish the backstory? All through the school scenes, I was yawning.

And to top it all, they seemed obligated to tell us why hero and heroine did not ever meet after school, and concocts a story of mistaken identity. So cliche. This where I let out a groan and called it quits.

Does the move turns around for good after that? I don't care. A 100 minutes of my time was already down the drain.

The BGM was good at times, but the music director does not seem to know when to stop. Most scenes don't even need a BGM, but here there is some instrument or the other playing in the background at all times.

Slow moving movies are just fine. But when you take a 30 minute movie, squeeze in filler stories to make it a two and a half hour movie, it is not.

I usually do not watch tamil movies, but this one got rave reviews that made me want to watch it. This one might be better than all that trash dished out by Vijay and the likes, but not good enough to be called a good movie.

Nitpicking
The above is a Rajiv Menon directorial debut movie and not Mani Rathnam's.

Based on a real-life murder in my hometown - near my uncle's home as a matter of fact.

Also a textbook example of investigative botch-work. The real story didn't end as pleasantly as the movie does.
