Re: Suggestions for Team-BHP from Team-BHPians

Can someone please tell me how to add captions in between images? As in, when I write a travelouge and upload pics, I want to add captions to the images.

Here's how you do it :

1) Upload images
2) Once you're done, click on the "Manage Attachments" button; it is the one shown in Image 1. Select, "Insert all".
3) You can then add captions for each image.

Re: Suggestions for Team-BHP from Team-BHPians

Wanted to say thanks to GTO, Technocrat & Zappo for the new, improved monthly car reporting (wanted to say this in the said thread itself but didn't want to risk another infraction :-). 'Banned' might have seemed a cool status message until I knew what it meant, definitely doesn't now .

A query I had and had for a long time: Isn't there some way of making searching-for-old-threads simpler? I was only a couple of days back trying to search for an old thread and just couldn't. After searching for the topic at the top-right search bar, I browsed 3 pages of search returns and still couldn't locate the thread.

I understand it's bound to be inherent in a forum where anyone can start a new thread. Ummmm...but some way to make search simpler would be highly appreciated.

One way could be to have forum specific searches. So, for instance, I know that what I'm looking for would probably be in 'The Indian Car Scene', I'd search specifically in the forum only or if it's a tecnical issue related to 'Hyundai Verna', I'd serach for Hyundai Verna in the Technical section only. Just a thought..don't know if it's possible?

A new guest on the forum typically arrives with the intention of getting guidance/advice regarding the new car he is planning to buy. On url www.team-bhp.com, he may turn to any of the following tabs "Advice", "Test Drives" and "Forum". Probably in that order. He doesn't find what he needs immediately under "Advice" tab. so he turns to "Test Drives", where he actually finds an excellent and very useful Summary Review. Great. But he is also looking for detailed reviews including ownership experiences. Will he find it, will he not? Well, I was lost initially quite a few times. As the "Forum" tab has loads of sections and is actually more suitable for a member than a new guest, whose primary interest is, let me repeat for emphasis, to get information in respect of planned purchase of new car.

In order to increase the ease of access of such information, I have the following suggestion:
  1. Rename the tab "Test Drives" to "Car Reviews", which appears more appropriate.
  2. Under this new tab, there can be three sub-tabs. Each of these sub-tabs will generate car-wise output, based on the selection by the user, in the same manner as in is presently under existing "Test Drives" tab. The sub-tabs are as follows:
    • "Summary Review": This will give the same summary review as one gets presently under the existing "Test Drives" tab.
    • "Official Test Drive Review": This will guide the user to the Official Test Drive & Review of the car selected. In case, no such review exists, appropriate message will be generated.
    • "Ownership Review": This can have further sub-tabs
      • "Initial Ownership Reviews"
      • "Long-term Ownership Reviews"
Each of the above tab would list the review threads of the car selected by the user.
I believe that this change would immensely enhance the appeal of the forum to a newcomer. He will find all he needs to find about a car from a single main tab. Of course, all the existing car reviews would need to be suitably tagged for identification for this purpose, which is a one-time exercise.
I totally second that. Even I had been thinking that once a person has read the summary of a particular vehicle (not just a guest, but even a member - I still sometimes go to the section to get a brief snapshot of a car), it'd be great to have a direct link to it's detailed 'Test Drive & Review' by GTO or one of the mods.

Also, I sometimes feel that the 'Test Drives' (it'd be great to rename it to 'Car Reviews') section is the last to be updated. Case in point, the new Hyundai Verna.

Totally second this! As a live example, I just wanted to 'Like' or 'Agree' to Mark 5's post but didn't exactly want to thank him . But since there was no such option, I had to 'Quote' him.

I am sure, an 'Agree' button would help reduce some posts too by members who just want to 'Agree' with an earlier post but are forced to wite it our rather than just click on a button.

Please please please enable such option so that one can select individual stickers. You may have the shipping cost standard (irrespective of quantity) so that people like me could tell the world that I indeed 'Live to Drive', yet again.
This has been raised an umpteen number of times and as frequently replied by the Mods: 'Logistical difficulties'. That said, considering that the issue is raised so frequently, am sure something must be getting done :-)

And ohh yes, the 'LIVE TO DRIVE' sticker is my favorite too. It's really catchy and especially on a yellow base, looks awesome.

Many of the posts are utterly useless even on threads that are very very useful otherwise. Case in point: GTOs review of Beat Diesel here:

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/offici...ve-review.html

The "thanks" feature has been around for months and still on the first two pages almost all of the posts (there are perhaps a few exceptions if you are willing to stretch) are actually "congratulations GTO" "well done GTO" and such.

I mean if I am going through the thread it adds exactly nothing to my knowledge to go through any of these posts (BTW GTO has done a wonderful job, as he has done on quite a few other reviews - my point is not that the review was bad - my point is what happens next is no good).

Several more examples exist - any active BHPian can attest to what I'm saying.

Even when posts are not useless there are several threads where the following pattern can be easily observed:

1. some BHPian asks a question
2. some vague replies come
3. somebody sends a pointed response that enumerates lots of options along with recommendation on what will be most likely the best solution and what other sources of information exist
4. people continue to give suggestions - several of these are repeats.

Now 3 months later another guy has the same (or similar) question - finds the thread and the thread now has over a dozen pages with perhaps 3 or 4 posts (of the type in point no. 3 above) that cover the whole thing very well.

I believe we should have some mechanism of facilitating easy access to such comprehensive posts. Such a mechanism will:
  1. Help people find what they are looking for very fast
  2. Reduce the chances that same questions will be asked again and again in different threads and even different posts on the same thread
  3. Reduce the load on TBHP servers - if people can find what they are looking for fast they will waste less of their time and less of TBHP bandwidth
  4. Improve the quality of discourse (may be, though I'm not sure; clear guidelines haven't stopped people, including the author of this post, from cluttering TBHP.
My suggestion - Now that we have "thanks" feature - there can be some mechanism in search that can automatically take the "thanks" into account when enumerating posts - perhaps the algorithm that sorts the posts by relevance.

And/or apart from having a rating for threads, we can have a rating mechanism for posts (though "thanks" should serve the same purpose)

PS: If some Mod can write an article on how to search TBHP efficiently, that will also help both BHPians and non-BHPians who come looking for info on TBHP right now. In my experience at the moment Google search with "site"team-bhp.com" in the search terms gives better results right now than TBHP's own engine (e.g. try searching with keywords "tyre site:team-bhp.com" in google and "tyre" in the search box on top right) - I may be doing something wrong while searching but then most of us have quite a bit of experience with google, not so much with TBHP's engine.
Apologies for posting so soon after the previous post but the 'Edit' button died on me and wanted to sort-of put emphasis on the issues raised by Vina.

Hope I'm not doing the same thing that Vina is saying members do: 'Adding irrelevant posts'. But since it's a 'Suggestions' thread, I thought my posting was maybe justified.

I agree to most things Vina has said. Am not sure of a solution though, except probably to make members sensitive to this and request them to refrain from posting until they have something definite to add to the discussion.

And yes, Google does tend to give better results on a particular topic than T-BHP's search engine. Even as a member, when I'm searching for something, I have, at times, had to resort to a Google search when I fail to find a relevant thread through a T-BHP search (forgot to mention it in my previous post). Don't know why this is?

LOL

It's a rather trivial issue, but needs to be addressed for quality purposes.

LoL...+1. I was wondering why this wasn't brought up yet. I myself clicked on the the wrong button many times only to find it cannot be undone.

Yes, please do provide an option to undo.

All I can say is, please use the report this post to a Moderator function for zero-value posts and, I can assure you, we'll step right in.

Noted, but video guides only possible in the longer-term.

Informative indeed. Are you aware that all new registrants now have to compulsorily visit our rules section, and mention the one they think is the most important? Believe me, this answer greatly influences whether their membership is accepted or not.

Perhaps, you can create a new thread and *attach* an excel sheet? Our attachment system permits this format.

Re: Suggestions for Team-BHP from Team-BHPians

There's a lot of info in the travelogue/route queries section. Some kind of a link up between Team Bhp and Google Maps would help in getting this info in a more searcheable form. For example Hotels along routes that members have actually stayed in, would be easily searcheable on a map with reviews and rates. Or road conditions for that matter.

Car Finder?

There is a mobile phone website gsmarena.com which has a "phone finder" option wherein we can select the mobile phone of our choice by ticking our various preferences in the options.

Now, since we are spoilt for choice with innumerable cars and with innumerable options, is it possible to create a similar "car finder" wherein we can can select the various preferences to shortlist the car most suitable for our needs?

Some of the options can be as listed below which can be enlarged with inputs from our various members:

1) Body type such as hatch, sedan, SUV, etc.
2) Fuel type
3) Power output
4) Features
5) Tyre size
6) Manual/automatic
7) Price

In the Autocar India magazine, the various above options are available but we cannot compare and shortlist our preference except probably by writing down the features we like and making an exhaustive list which would be tiresome and time consuming.

Mods. Is it possible to create something like this in our website? Thanks

Re: Suggestions for Team-BHP from Team-BHPians

A bug?

I created a thread yesterday and it was renamed by the mods. I was scanning through the replies when the title of the replies caught my attention. Link to the same

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/indian...-required.html

Look at the heading of the replies, until the first 12 posts, the original heading is present. From the 13th post onwards, the headline is the new title. Shouldn't the heading of the previous post too be changed?
