Even when in comes to "western" medicine, there are several grey areas. Take the common cold for example - I had a bad cold on Friday and needed to be 100% for a presentation today morning.

Called up my grandpa (ENT surgeon) and he prescribed the usual medication - Cetirizine.

Dad (a Heart surgeon) overheard and quipped - "Yeah - take those and the cold will be gone in 72 hrs. Don't take them and it'll take 3 days."

I'm not telling how I treated that cold - but its gone

I'm told that this 'Tonsilon' stuff was homeopathy.
Of course, the sugar is only the carrier. I know many people (including one person in my close surroundings ) like making fun of this.

Sugar is in all of these little pills but 98 or 99 out of 100 different remedies may not give you any relief when being sick if it is the wrong one.

Never heard of Tonsilon but that may be because I only stick to the globuli, no liquid homeopathics. Many of them are mixed as well.

For those folks who think Homeopathy is a placebo, well, I've used it to cure my dog of Hematoma, which is in laymans terms, a lump of blood in the ear. The only option in allopathy is surgery, so the vet recommended I try homeopathy. It worked, and wonderfully. No scar, no pain, just reduced the blood accumulation slowly but surely.

BTW, also got cured of my tonsil problem thanks to DR.Rashid Wadia, a noted homeopath from Bombay, and had some miraculous results with Vitiligo Leucoderma as well. Allopathy failed in both these cases and failed miserably.

Having said that, its important to understand that there are somethings that Homeopathy cures better and some that Allopathy cures better.

I am not sure I understand what you mean?

@ Lalvaz: correct! There are many thing homeopathy can cure better than allopathy, however there are some limitations too.

From the various posts, i am more and more inclined to go with homeopathy for my kid - maybe even myself as I am not extremely comfortable with allopathic medicines and avoid them. Basically the absence of side effects is something to smile about. I am undergoing a dental treatment (root canal) and the doc had prescribed some medicines which I duly took. The medicines made the last few days horrible. I had severe acidity, sores in the mouth and extreme indigestion. Later on I found out that all of it was because the dental medication was supposed to be too strong and has quite a few side effects like this!

Now its the difficult task of finding the right doc. How does one go about selecting a 'good' doctor?

Oh ja, back pains and other chronic problems: nothing better than yoga! Couldn't agree more. My sister and BIL are both yoga teachers, so I was fortunate to get some insights into this.

I think yoga in general helps you to remain healthy and to prevent many illnesses. However, if you suddenly develop fever and a cough I am not sure this would be the remedy for it.

@ kalpeshc: Difficult! I think the first thing I would do is to hear around for any recommendations. I only have my German doctor at hand myself and though I just need to call in case of emergency it is convenient to have someone close by too. I found Lalvaz' post interesting. Will keep this in mind. I have also heard of a Dr. Sankaran in Juhu already who is supposed to be very good. Check out the link, it is quite interesting: Dr. Sankaran's Clinic Home Page

In the end you will only find out once you go there and once you have had a few treatments. In Germany I was lucky to actually get a homeopathy specialist at first try and by real coincidence. Hope I will be able to achieve the same here too. Lol.

I would recommend homeopathy. I have been taking homeopathic medicines for a year now for my chronic acidity and it has really helped. The doctor first asked me all about my habits, sleeping, eating routines, kind of dreams I saw and many more seemingly irrelevant questions. But the medicine she gave me were not many; just one set of pills. I have been taking them for a year now and I can see the change in my overalll system, not just the acidity part.

This is what the doc told me too. That this treatment will take time but will attend to all the core issues leading to acidity. I would strongly recommend homeopathy, especially for chronic problems.

As an aside, I would also recommend not giving your child any medicines unless its an emergency. Children are much stronger than adults and they respond to natural healing much faster. And it is much safer. Medicines, homeopathy or allopathy, do reduce the natural immunity levels and children are much more sesceptible to becoming dependent.

I would suggest you avoid giving medicines for anything and everything till it becomes absolutely necessary. I believe it is true that grandma's simple solutions work wonders. My little son's tummy ache gets cured with half a glass of water mixed with sugar! Believe it or not.

I take both Homoeopathy, & allopathy - at the same time. Long time since I tried Ayurveda, though. Like with allopathy, one needs a gooood homoeopath. Unless the diagnosis is correct, why blame the medicines ?

I have seen some serious cases being treated - from kidney stones to more severe cases of other ailments.

While allopathy gives something like a shock treatment to the body (considering the potency of those chemicals vs the gentler homoeopathy medicines), homoeopathy's a better bet for curing chronic conditions than the medical management offered by allopathy.

Hi,
I practice Classical Homeopathy and have been doing so for the past few years. It feels good that in India people have the freedom to choose any "alternate" options available in healthcare and are becoming aware of the possibilities other therapies offer.

TheOne® answered most of the questions posted, however I want to stress on a few important ones

@kalpeshcetailed case history does not mean the details like date of all your illness, previous long illness which required medications would do just fine and history is not a absolute must in many cases.
Also Homeopathy works at strengthening of the immune system and hence a longer period of good health, it takes roughly one month of treatment for every year of illness in chronic conditions and in acute llnesses a few minutes to a few hours.

@sgiitk : It is a myth that Homeopathy cannot treat acutes (I do not wish to comment on ayurveda as it is not my expertise), it can generate wonderful reactions for the chronic diseases more so than any other therapy which I have come across and hence people think of it only in chronics.

@navin : Do not know the contents of 'Tonsilon', but most of these patented OTC medications contain more than one remedy, which is not Classical Homeopathy. Homeopathy believes in individualizing the medication to the patient and not to the diseases and hence any specifics can be considered 'un- homeopathic'

@deepclutch : True, Classical Homeopathy believes in employing a single medication at a point of time, however the number of practioners following this basic rule is handful.

If anybody has any queries on Homeopathy will be happy to answer them.
However I can only give information and it should not be treated as advice for medication or as treatment, it is not intended for, and neither should it be taken as, professional medical advice nor a substitute for professional medical advice.

Hello ,
What I meant was about the two trends I am aware of homeopathy now.

The First One is Classic Homeopathy which checks the patients total health condition by Practitioner asking various details to patient about the habits like sleeping, food habits etc.then suggests a Single Pill/powder to the patient to take.these days many uses computer softwares like software RADAR VITHOULKAS EXPERT System to ease the finding/compare the best solution for the particular person.
International Academy of CLASSICAL HOMEOPATHY - The Vithoulkas Expert System (V.E.S.)

Other One is Non-Classical Homeopathy.
Quote:
The Classical homeopaths therefore try to find a remedy that addresses all these aspects, rather than isolating one or two of them, because they think that this is the surest and gentlest way to achieve a long-lasting cure. To this end they will give only one remedy at a time. The problem is that some patients may not understand this subtle process and thus not stick with the treatment.

The non-Classical approach so often will endeavour to find a remedy or remedies that will alleviate the most urgent or annoying symptoms first, usually on the physical level - a more one-step-at-a-time approach. The issue here could be that the patient will disappear before a long-lasting cure has been initiated because they feel 'well enough', though still not fully healthy.

PS: Remember I am not a homeo practitioner.but just got myself aware of some info about homeo

I have treatment for short sight(Myopia) by homeo under Dr.Binoy Vallabhassery at kottayam, kerala and found it good.

Excellent thread!! I do not prefer allopathy for ailments, I usually go for ayurveda.

Does some homeopathy medicines contain alcohol? If so, is it possible to get homeopathy treatment by avoiding medicines that contain alcohol?
