US citizens have nothing better to see conspiracy theories in everything. For me, moon landing happened, and to deny that would be an insult to the courage of the people who went there or even attempted to be there (Apollo 13??)

Please do not take news appearing in "The Onion" at face value. It is part of a well known "fake news network" there. It is purely meant for entertainment. See the link about them in Wikipedia.

Thats because money required for this kind of mission is huge and also moon is not that interesting now, they are looking into mars.

PANAJI, India — India's first lunar mission has captured images of the landing site of the Apollo 15 craft, debunking theories that the US mission was a hoax, the country's state-run space agency said Wednesday.
"The images captured by a hyper-spectral camera fitted as a part of Chandrayaan-I... has reconfirmed the veracity of the Apollo 15 mission," said Prakash Chauhan, from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Sigh. Why are we so gullible as to believe the moon landings were fake based on the ravings of some half-baked conspiracy theorists? We might as well believe evolution is a great scam and everything was indeed created by a white-bearded old guy in 4004 BC.

Instead of debating over moon landing, we can speculate on current debate that is raging the country:

Water on Moon - Found in 2009

Water detected on the Moon, in Year 2009, by a US instrument aboard an Indian spacecraft.

(Search with keywords 'water' 'moon' in google news.)

I just wonder why NASA wasn't interested in doing these themselves. Cost involved? Useless research? May be...

NASA's Cassini spacecraft, now orbiting the Saturn, had taken some long distance measurements of Moon in year 1999, on its way out from Earth, but NASA says nobody cared to analyze the data at that time.

Boss if you feel your predessors lived atop tree tops then please do us a favour, speak for yourself. How was the real estate up there back then ?

@others: By 4004 BC and bearded man, he means God/Allah/Bhagwaan. Wiki for it.

First of all Kudos to our countrymen to have achieved what they have. 1200 seconds and 7 missions, executed flawlessly. Not one failure uptil now and fingers crossed and prayers sent for the future.

Why wasn't NASA interested in doing water detection ? Well they have to go there first don't they. Even if they sent unmanned satellites later probably they did not have the equipment as sofisticated as now. So now they have it and they now also have a carrier in India to send it up there.

The existance of water on the moon or Mars (frozen ice) for that matter is nothing new. They had speculated and taken pictures earlier, but the difference now is they have instruments to actually give substantial proof that it exist up there and not fluttering flags and rigged pictures.

Sorry for my late entry into this topic.

Kaushik_s, your right. Give this debate to Aaj Tak and they will for sure run this for months together non stop with tons of nonsense added

P.S. just to keep the debate on scam's going. Anyone recall's the Titanic sinking scam!!!! Titanic: the ship that never sank.

Moon is a place where we will expand in the far future.

Hope i can live that long in some cryogenic state

That's an interesting observation. One should watch this documentary, and it will change many a perception of what/who the white bearded guy from 4004 BC might have been.

...and even if the moon landing weren't a hoax, many of us wonder why no one went back to the moon since Apollo 17 in 1972.

Who ever that white-bearded man be! But They did land on Moon and there were about 8 missions (if my memory is right) after the Neil Armstrong mission. The reason why the man on moon was left
1. Achieved what was once considered impossible, and so many mission to and back - too boring! Like today's visit to ISS, its nothing new! As people rightly said, technology developed, no need for human presence. Machines got better! Same reason why Unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) are used for spying and carrying out surgical strikes than conventional fighter jets!

2. Involves lot of cost (safety x4) as it involves humans - hence NASA decided to concentrate on other celestial bodies such as mars, venus, jupiter and saturn. This was time when they were preparing for Voyager missions.

3. There was more or less no competition from the other end of the world and cold war heightened - money spent on building space based weapons, spy satellites, and war rooms up in the space.

4. Currently, NASA is preparing to do that Moon landing again - to counter Chinese and just to prove a point - beyond this they have a plan to build a permenant station in moon for experiments related to "Man on Mars" - endeavours have become larger and complex - hence moon mission has become really a "easy to do" thing!

5. During a lecture from an Ex-Astronaut, I was surprised to learn that the most understood celestial body in our galaxy is - well if you all thought its Earth, then you are wrong! We know more about mars than about our own Earth! Hence, priorities changed during the early and mid - 90's and started focussing on understanding the Earth.

6. Will we see any more moon missions? May be by the Chinese and just to prove a point by NASA. otherwise, the aim now is towards outerspace, understanding the Earth, the Sun, Mars and Europa (Jupiter's Moon!) in detail.
