BHUVAN by ISRO:- Indian answer to google earth?

Not quite there Yet!!!!

Well, ISRO has launched BHUVAN that is supposed to be the Indian answer to Google Earth. Apparently it will give better 3D imagery of India as to what google has to offer at the moment. Apart from images it will also have weather, maps, district and state boundries etc etc. For full article read here

Though at the moment it appears that the site is overloaded and is not able to handle the number of hits it is getting. Hopefully ISRO will be able to sort this out in a few days.

I am sure once fully functional it will be helpfull for a lot of us in finding directions etc etc.

The clarity and detail that google/ wikimapia/ yahoo offer is missing.

Plus only try this on IE.
and register before downloading.

Provide name/email/address etc.

No validation or anything.

Sarkari website.

You know there are some good aspects of Sarkari endevours. Arunachal will be labeled as Indian territory instead of China, Kashmir labeled as an Indian State instead of "disputed" but part of Pakistan, etc.

Along with the nice clarity and detail of google/wiki/yahoo India looses big chunks of her territory.

I don't know why is this being published as a software by ISRO. I registered on the site and downloaded the setup file. It installed a software called TerraExplorer by a US based company called SkylineGlobal.

Here's a quote from the software.

The data for the map is provided by ISRO, not the rendering software.

Works only in IE on windows. Moreover the imagery atleast for punjab towns is far inferior to google.
Imaging putting govt data on a site which runs only in a proprietary format operating system.
Site is currently in ilugd hall of shame, like countless other GOI sites.
BTW as of now site is down. Too many downloads I guess.
Those who have used it, do remote areas also have 5m coverage?

Ok, I got it to work. The images are very inferior to Google earth. I can even trace the fence of my house on Google earth, here I can't even locate the house.

Edit: Even overlapping the wikimapia over Bhuvan map didn't help. It is that hazy. Basically, all this talk about 5m resolution, superiority over google is all hot air.

It works only in IE .

It is as pathetic as any other website of GOI. Not worth even a paisa. The images are so blurred that you can't differentiate between things.

Couldn't imagine how can anybody compare this with Google earth.

Well,

* It only works on Windogs
* Doesn't work on GNU/Linux, Mac or BSD.
* It only works on IE
* Doesn't work on Firefox.

Traits of a site developed by TCS! TCS has also developed the website for Ministry of Company Affairs too where you can't even make a payment by credit card from anything not Windogs or Internet Exploder. You can fill up e-forms only on Adobe Acrobat Reader. Why do I need Windogs just to digitally sign my documents for e-filing?

Why is government wasting taxpayers' money in such vendor locked-in, proprietary software endeavours?

In order to use Bhuvan I need to buy a licensed copy of Windogs from Microsux? What the heck?

Its been 10 years I am on Debian and I value my freedom.

First, GOI uses my tax money to get these tools/sites prepared, then I have to pay for the Windogs and other proprietary software to use them. I hate being milked twice!

Moreover, when Google can prepare such a nice software single handedly by just buying data from NavTeq, why ISRO needed TCS, Wipro, Mahindra Satyam and CTS (as per Wikipedia) just to prepare this half baked tool? Does that mean India's top IT companies collaboratively can not compete with Google's Earth?

My two bits.

TCS and the sarkari departments have a lot in common than you are aware of and both have bureaucracies that function in similar ways. So there would be a good synergy and understanding between the two..
