Well considering that I'll be downloading movies, games sometimes, but I'm sure I won't be crossing the 2 GB mark in them. Moreover, will 8 GB be enough in just browsing the Internet for about 10+ hrs a day???

If it is just browsing without any downloads, 10 hrs a day for one month itself will consume not more than 200 MB.

I'm not sure whether it'd be enough, since there are heavy images on most sites like for example Team-BHP, Highresautoimages.com, Supercars.Net, etc too.

The biggest download hoggers are movies and internet radio. Imagine if you listen to 64kbps internet radio 3 hours a day! Regular surfing will not take more than a GB even if you surf image sites.

get an unlimited plan from some local operator...instead of going with the brands.... i myself use a 64K unlimited pack from some "webtime" -hathway, and download something like 10-15 Gb per month. does not create a problem, coz its unlimited, and 90% of the time, i happen to get 300 kbps and above ( dunno how)...

people like me just cant stay in limits

I am currently using Pacenet through our local operator. It gives me 64K unlimited pack. Its charging me Rs 800/month. Its just too slow to download music/movies/games.

You can either go for an Airtel night unlimited or unlimited connection. Airtel 128 unlimited will give you 110kbps actual speeds
Other option is to go for the BSNL business plan which give you 20GB and 1mbps connection. It costs Rs 5000/mo. the cheaper option is 512kbps/10GB which is 3000/mo. BSNL is going to lower costs and raise datacap limits soon as TRAI is hot on their heels. If they do not meet targets last mile copper will be unbundled which spells doom for them!

You are also being charged for uploads. Torrents upload the same time you are downloading. So for e.g. if you download 1 gb the torrent uploads simultaneous 1 gb or more depending on the users that are leeching the file from you. Check to see if you are charged for uploads as well. What you are paying for internet is too high. You get unlimited downloads a month at 256 kbps speed for 900rs. Exatt Net in Mumbai offers that service and are pretty fast. I get non stop dload speed of atleast 25 kB/sec which is good considering 256 kbps(kilobits) converts to 32 kb/sec(kilobytes).

Ajmat, had the same problem as yours here in Delhi. The monthly rental was a measly sum, but the bill at the end of the month came to 12K. Fact is there was a limit regarding how much you can download and view. Beyond that you have to pay per MB. All fine print of course, so the consumer wont find out soon enough.

Changed to another ISP, but now back with Airtel with a 256 Kbps, unlimited connection for less than Rs.1000 a month. No hidden charges. Awesome!

Manti.

Ok, just recieved last months Touchtel bill. I must have downloaded atleast 4 TG episodes (350MB each) and many other video files from various sites.

The bill still says DSL internet = Rs. 600, DSL rental Rs. 99.

So that's settled then, my package is unlimited and i still get around 200+kbps of download speed (on an average). Connection speed is 256 (altough the software reads 288kbps every time)

I have subscribed to the internet service provided by my local cable-wallah at my home in Hyderabad. Installation was 1000 bucks (non-refundable) and the monthly charge is just 350 bucks!!

The speed is very good, especially at night where my emule downloads hit upto 34 KBps. The guy had told me that the connection was a 144 Kbps but I regularly get more than 256 Kbps.

The only grouse is the poor reliability. The cable is a Cat 6e that runs from building to building with no protection or support. Plus they use the cheapest available 10Mbps hubs. I also once blew an NIC due to a power surge from their hub.

Quite a far cry from the ADSL connection from TATA TeleServices I had in Bombay. I used to get 256 Kbps consistently and the link did not fail even once. It was bloody expensive, though.
