Totally love this idea of the info.

Would help us try shots under similar settings.

New Theme "Birds"

Ok Guys,

I have been asked to kick off a new theme by one of our Moderators. The new theme is "Birds". Now, this theme is little "Uncontrollable" comparing to all themes we had till Now. So let me give you some tips before you start.

1) Always try to include the full Bird in frame. Often we tend to miss out tail or leg. See the below example.

The Official Theme Photography Thread: Festival Spirit-yellow.jpg

2) BUT, this does not mean that you should not take close-ups. Some times, you may need to showcase some specialties on beak or head, in such cases you can shoot portraits. See the next example. I wanted to show the colors on head and beak, hence a portrait.

3) Always make sure you have some catch light on eyes of the subject. Catch Light eh? see here Catch light - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia if you do not know what catch light is.

4) Now, forget about all these tips when it comes to Action photography. Coz those are accidental and you will not be able to follow any rules there. See below.

The Official Theme Photography Thread: Festival Spirit-kite_action.jpg

5) Having said all these things, you can always be creative. For example, you can shoot a Scape frame also. Some times, it gives you much PUNCH than a portrait. See this KF, i chose to shoot a scape of this, later on i had full frame, But liked this more.

6) Always use Naturel pearch if you are shooting Wild birds. Now, this is nearly imposibble if you shoot in captivity. see below, this is a bad example. (I shoot only wild. Not under any controlled situation).

The Official Theme Photography Thread: Festival Spirit-fence.jpg

7) Alaways shoot at eye level. and try to follow "Rule of Third" when ever possible. Leave more space towards the direction where bird is looking.

Ok guys, nuff said now go ahead and start shooting. I am no expert on this, but spent considerable amount of time for the same. And i use the cheapest available gears for Birding. See here for more. India Nature Watch all the best.

Thanks
--Sree--

PS: If you shoot wild, please try to avoid nest photography. Just for the well being of wildlife (Activity near nest will attract unwanted attention either by predators or Humans). This is just a personnel opinion.

Wasn't this shot categorized as self-portrait last time? Only bird photography please...

I have very little bird shots, I neither have the patience nor the equipment for birding.

This is my best bird shot until now.
