This is very scary to think about and utterly frustrating to do.

Unless absolutely necessary these things should not be done. Look at the expenditure in communicating the numbers globally, noew letterheads, new cards etc.

I thought we were done with the period when your landline number changed every three years,

I think that is precisely why such decisions are taken, they involve big money.

You can try CSV Editor. Export your address book as CSV and add 9 to 1300 numbers in one go.

Hi Mobile savvy friends,
Did you hear that the Chennai BSNL is auctioning the Fancy numbers for the 3G connections.I too bid one number 944XXXXXXX (X is the same numbers repeated) it has shot up to Rs.180,000. I don't know what that number is going to bring for such a price.I too bid a couple of numbers when it shot above 2100 I give up.Mine is of Rs 2100 for a number(944552XXXX. In such a way the BSNL wants to make profit for their corporation.

Its not only BSNL sell fancy numbers at a premium.
Even other mobile companies has been doing this since long.

Even at RTO, you can get a fancy number for your car/two wheeler by paying extra payment.
Only thing is that amount payable will be different in each states - and these numbers can be booked and keep for 3 months i,e within 3 months from allotment one has to buy/register a car, otherwise you lose the number and money paid.

When people are willing to spend silly money on just a number (mobile or car plates) then you cannot fault the respective companies from making a profit on that mentality!
