Any Solar Eclipse Chasers?

hi All,

There is a Annular Solar Eclipse that passes the southern tip of India coming Jan 15. It touches the tip of India at Danushkodi(Rameshwaram) and goes on to the uninhabited islands of Srilanka.

It is, I read once in a life time experience, and will never occur in our lifetime again in South of India.

Is anyone planning to take pictures or watch the Eclipse? I would like to travel, but wonder if there is any company.

My train tickets to Madras are booked, our accomodation is almost booked.

I'll be there for sure.

I'm not too sure about pics as I've heard so many things about looking at the sun directly or pointing a camera directly at the sun during an eclipse. I need to do a bit of research before I go though.

Saar,

I used an Xray to click pics of the eclipse that was seen in delhi. Friends stopped their DSLR camera down to f22 and did not use anything. as simple as it gets!

It was a bright moon at 1.45 am. I looked at that. But it was not fully round. A very partial eclipse effect was found at that time in Chennai. I had a snap in the mobile. Let me download and post tomorrow.

Hi anachronix,
Am planning to go as far as possible into the restricted area of Dhanushkodi. It being one of my dream destinations, this will be a 2 in 1 trip.

All arrangements are being made. Think there is going to be such a crowd there in Rameshwaram from what I hear. The day being a new moon day (obviously) and being important for people of faith.

BTW, who all are going to Rameshwaram?

Oh gosh, I thought there will be not much of the crowd because of the closure of temples on the Eclipse day!

Can some one accommodate me if you are driving from Chennai to Rameshwaram? I can share the expenses and share the driving distance too.

Sorry Millionswords,

Am driving out there, but am already full. I dont think you will have problems finding a ride or transport to Rameshwaram, but accomodation might be a bit of a problem from what I hear.

Guys, need your help. Since this will be a chance in a lifetime opportunity, I want to take pictures of the eclipse and also view it. In the olden days, we used to use smoked glasses to view the eclipse. Is this safe? (EDIT - just read that smoked glasses and the like are a strict no, no!) Or are there "readymade" glasses available? And where can I get them? Need some help.

Also, I have a DSLR, tripod and the kit lens - 18 - 55 mm. Please advise on the best way to take pics of the eclipse.
