Best investment for retirement

I have so far not looked at the retirement aspect of things with zero investment so far ( I've been careless) and I now feel its high time I did that. I am aware of various retirement funds offered by banks but want to know which would be the best in the long term.

You will leave your retirement to a bank fund?

Let a good MF do the earning - and you manage the withdrawls and hence the income streams.

no?

You need to consider a qualified financial advisor. Only he can recommend you an retirement investment plan based on your age, income, familiy, liabilities, loans and so on.

You can make a start by investing in PPF and NPS (national pension scheme).

In addition , I think you should open a DEMAT Account and Start a long term SIP with a Good MF house ( choose a diversified Fund) based on your risk acumen. Do check various websites available to help you in decision.

Quoting an old post from 2010. Fast forward 8 years, today this NPS is a de-facto Exempt-Exempt-Exempt category investment apparently without any upper ceiling like PPF.(1.5 L) Historic data shows that NPS equity fund returns have been around 9+% over last few years.

Government has already increased NPS contribution to 14% for public sector employees.

With tax breaks thrown in, how does NPS now look as a sensible retirement option for those who are not covered by default.

Mods: Please move it to appropriate thread in case I was not able to find where this is being discussed currently.

Earlier NPS was not an EEE category investment like PPF , has this changed ?

I think EEE (in case of NPS) means this:
Contribution: Exempt (upto 1.5L total per annum - NPS+PPF+PF+HLP etc)
Accumulation: Exempt
Withdrawl: 60% corpus only can be withdrawn and this is tax-free
The rest 40% is paid in the form of annuity and this is taxed as normal income on annual basis.

You are right.

In order to avoid confusion, I hope I can make things clearer about the annuity -
40% of the corpus will (get invested and) yield a monthly pension (~ interest), which will be taxable i.e. it is not the 40% which is taxed but the monthly payment which you get out of the annuity which will be taxed.

Plenty of options regarding retirement savings are discussed in this thread - including early retirement :

and there is a poll here, with lots of suggestions :
