amazon has been amazing, i order all the time - esp design books and other stuff that are not available here.

but not just from amazon, i order from obscure companies that are related to my work - like 'old colony sound lab' for more books, special cds for checking equipment and other stuff from some other companies.

i have never been charged yet - duty that is. and have never had any problems.

here's my personal experience from amazon - the first time around. i ordered a CD called 'The notting hillbillies - lost, presumed having a good time' thru them. it didn't reach first time, so when i complained, they sent it again. it still didn't reach. they sent it the third time, this time couriered to my door! and assured me, if it still didn't reach, they would refund the full amount of the visa payment. 3 cds shipped, for the price of 1. now that's service!

so go ahead - u'r money is in safe hands!

are you ordering these good in your company name or in your personal name? i think, these customs guys go overboard when anything is billed to a 'company'

Last I had ordered a few Lp's and cd's about 15 in total and no duty what so ever in mumbai.

I've ordered stuff in US but not in india. Got my Rebel T2 from Amazon. Planning to get a 70-300mm lens from them this time round.

Did the books arrive in india in a sealed condition or were they opened and stuff??

I heard that some guys read ur books before delivering them to you...is this right???

Ok. Received my order on Thursday (15th Sept.). No duty hassels, delivered straight to my door and exactly what I ordered.

@ Rtech - Last time I checked, they don't ship electronic items to India. Books/CDs/DVDs. Bus

How exactly is the duty amount paid? In cash via the courier guy at the time of delivery or does amazon directly charge your credit card?

Books, DVD's etc. are not charged any duty. Other items I'm not sure off. I think they are held at the post office where you have to go and pay the duty to collect it. Not sure though. Waiting for any first hand experience from someone.

Yeah ! If it is below $100 or even $150 you will not be charged anything. But always insure electronics stuff when you order.

Also DHL or UPS are much better at shipping costlier stuff than using 'Airmail' or 'EMS WORLDWIDE EXPRESS'.

There are some shippers in the US whom you can use to collect all the stuff that are only shipped only in US. You can give their address when you order online.

Then they collect all the stuff and send you a big package once a month through DHL or UPS. They charge around $20 for their service.
