the word comes from the screw-on spare wheels that were manufactured in Stepney Street, Llanelli, South Wales. The wheels were exported to countries throughout the British Empire, and the word stepney stuck.

I am sorry to sound pedantic here but official origin of this word is as below:

Year: 1350 - 1400
Origin Language: Latin
Original Word: carr (def: wheeled vehicle) which is a variation of 'Carrus' or 'Carrum' in turn shifting to 'Carra'.

Also believed to be a variation of Cart used in english language to describe any wheeled vehicle and also has its origins in Latin word Carra as mentioned above.

Although this word is quite common in India, hardly anyone uses it in Britain. The Americans, of course, have never used it. The word is not included in most dictionaries. What we call a stepney, native speakers of English refer to as a spare. In America, the spare wheel is much smaller than the normal wheel.

Where did the word stepney come from? Well, actually the word stepney is the name of a street in Wales. A mechanic in the street of Stepney in the town of Llanelly was the first to provide the ready to use spare wheels. And the product, namely the spare wheels, began to be referred to by the name of the street where they were produced.

Well dunno about Car but I've read somewhere that the Word "Jeep" is derived from GP denoting General Purpose vehicle or Govenment Purpose vehicle.
