IT Dept notice under 143(1) to pay outstanding tax

Today I was fortunate to recieve a mail from the IT department. It informed me that I have an outstanding to pay under section 143(1) and that the payment is to be done within 30 days.

Now that was funny since I had that years tax calculated by a CA (since I had changed company in the middle of the year) and paid a huge amount as tax!

Decided to check with another CA, by going thru all the document once again; but chanced upon this article at TOI ( System error: Don't worry, says I-T chief - Mumbai - City - The Times of India ).

Seems like there is a bug in the IT system which is sending out these notices. Nice bug! It prints, attaches a payment slip and posts it!!!

This is reported in Mumbai and Bangalore (no idea why the bug loves these two cities only!)

Has anyone else received such a notice? If so, what have you done about it?

I think you can use RTI for that.

If the refund is delayed beyond a year you can write to the Grievance cell.

My heart skipped a beat on 27th March 2010 when one such intimation was delivered to me by Speed Post. Luckily it was a no due and no refund intimation. My query on it in post #64 here and I think it went unnoticed.

Just to put a closure to this:

The notice was sent because the IT departments system did not take into consideration all the self declared tax that I had paid. I had made the tax payment in two separate bank transactions and they took into account only one.

This caused the confusion.

Have sent a letter to them, CPO Bangalore, explaining the oversight by them and asking them to reverse all charges as I have paid all due, with copied of all the payment documents.

No word from them yet.

The IT dept is really wierd.
Almost 7-8 years back, I had received a notice from them that I owe them 1 Rupee! Rounding error, I guess. Must have been generated by some scheduled job. Printing that letter and posting it would have cost them much more than the 1 rupee that they would have recovered from me.
I ignored the notice anyways
