CNN IBN's news release.

Quote:
About 160 passengers are feared dead as a Mangalore bound Air India Express flight overshot the Mangalore airport runway on Saturday at 6.30 am.
According to eyewitness account, the Boeing 737 flight, which is believed to be carrying 165 passengers including 4 infants burst into flames soon after it overshot the runway while landing at the airport.
The Mangalore-Dubai route is a heavy density route. The firefighters have reached the spot and efforts are on to rescue the survivors. It is also learnt that because of the hilly terrain, the firefighters could not reach the accident site immediately. Twenty-five ambulances have also been rushed to the spot.
Sources in Air India tell CNN-IBN that the length of the runway is comparatively small. The cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained but the weather factor cannot be ruled out.
"Around 160 people are feared dead in the crash. Only Six to seven might have survived," Home Minister of Karnataka, V S Acharya told CNN-IBN.
May the souls of the departed rest in peace.

Eye witness say that it started landing in middle of runway and overshot the run way.

The airport is located on a hill. And all flights have been canceled from Mangalore airport.

Bodies are being taken to Wenlock hospital. And victims are taken to SCS and KMC Attavara hospitals.

Rescue work is still going on.

Karnataka CM is shocked and admitted to hospital says some local tv channels.

Last major crash in India was in the year 2000. Flight was Alliance Airlines.

Sad day.
Wikipedia says the runway (old one) is not a level one, "with the height varying from 90 m (300 ft) to 83 m (272 ft) from east to west. Landing on this short runway at this airport was considered difficult."

Tabletop runways offer zero margin for error, but then piloting is a zero-margin-for-error job. CNN-IBN says the pilot is not an Indian..

If as reported the plane had landed in the middle of the runway, it may be a pointer to the failure of the Instrument Landing System (ILS). Though the pilots should have been alert while descending and keep monitoring the descent and touchdown, bad weather and poor visibility could have caused their overdependence on ILS while in the first instance if the visibility was poor the aircraft should not have been allowed to land. What exactly happened we will know only after an enquiry and that if the faults are not hushed up. Quite opposite, the crash near Bangalore HAL Airport years ago happened due to an early touchdown.

It is indeed sad that the home comers in the flight did touch their town but perished without setting their foot on the soil.
