This is so wrong. Argentina leading the pack? Has to be Germany for me. The match against Australia could very well be termed as "The Great Socceroo Massacre". Brilliant, patient passing. Genious.

Germany is lucky to have a very easy group. They'll even pass the 16 team play-off (would have to face either England or USA or whoever from that group). But then they'll most probably face Argentina in the Quarter Final and then we'll see how good they are.

I do not know much about the game, but somehow have a feeling the unlikely ones will win this world cup.

thus voted for England.

My favourite team is Brazil, but I voted for Germany.

Chances are:
1) Germany
2) Spain

Remember that one of Brazil, Portugal and Ivory Coast will play Spain in the 2nd round. I think the winner of that 2nd rounder has a good chance to win it all.

Argentina Argentina.
Have been a supporter of Argentina from 86 worldcup itself. Was heartbroken when West Germany won the 90 world cup. I hated Germany since then till today(in football only ).
In 1990 Argentina played totally negative Football. In quarter and semi, they won because of the goalkeeper; he was a penalty specialist and they tried to do the same in the final also, but Lother Mathaeus and Co. had other ideas; Argentina had to taste their own pill.

They played such a defensive game that, I don't remember, they having won a match on regulation time (just opposite to 1986).

By the way, Germany is always my favourite team and I voted for them. Having seen all the matches only Germany had that penetration on the opposition defence.

Well that's only partly true. Germany were also doing the same in the later stages of the game and even in the Final. Anyway in 1990 World Cup Germany won because of theatrics of Klinseman & Rudi Voller, they put up a nice acting performance by diving inside the penalty box and referee got fooled. Otherwise they were not any better than the Argentinians. Well that's my opinion like you had yours and I'm still your friend

Anyway, so much for the most favorite team, Spain just got a taste of Swiss Knife, lost by 1-0 to the Swiss.

Despite all the possession which Spain enjoyed, they went down to the Swiss. Spain passed well, but upfront all they did was shoot the ball over the bar.

To their credit, the Swiss defended well, and looked quite solid at the back. The goal which they scored was more of a stroke of luck, but in the end that's all that matters.

Spain committed a mistake in not starting with Torres. Before his arrival, they seemed to lack purpose in front of goal. Torres did provide some direction, and had a good understanding with Villa, but proved to be unfortunate in the end.

Anyway, this match provided us with the first shock of the World Cup 2010.

To me, it looks like this is a low-scoring WC. Anyone else think so?

^^ Lol, had posted on the other thread .
Yeah, this was a shocker for sure. Switzerland had the right combination of skill and luck which allowed them to end their 18 match losing streak against Spain.

I agree on the low scoring part, no team has been able to completely impress me til now, apart from Germany. Strangely, all star or no star, all teams look pretty much the same.

Other then football the other thing that keeps me glued to the TV these days is the presenter for ESPN (And I know most of you guys too)

Mayanti Langer. HOLY MACKEREL!!! (if I say anything more I will get infracted)

I did a quick google on her and she knows her "football" quite well.. Most of the time what she says gets filtered out, my eyes do the listening.

Quote from Wiki: Mayanti Langer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
She was in her college football team in the beginning and then became a guest anchor for a broadcast of FIFA beach football.
Now why didnt I watch the Hockey World Cup 2010 closely

Spain sure laid an egg yesterday! :

And Forlan has learnt how to dip the ball. Very few have done that.

Spain...ecstacy and agony yesterday, the latter for the most part. 76% possession and a duck to show for it. Painful to watch such a skillful team go down to the dour Swiss. Last WC, IIRC, the swiss did not concede a single goal and went out in the second round to Ukraine on Penalties. This is their way of playing and they did well, even after one of the CBs in Senderos had to be substituted.

On a lighter note, now I am sure Football is played on a Grass Court. Fedex must be smiling ear-to-ear.
