Its free on Jio. BCCI knows very well this series will have very low viewership, so there won't be any premium around this.

Good platform for Jaiswal to debut. I wish all youngsters were given a chance in this series rather than Rohit & Kohli using this as their stats-massaging platform.

I know what you mean. But, Pujara shouldn't get a comeback. He is averaging 28 in last 3 Years. Same for Kohli and Rahane. Rohit gets flak but he is doing much better than these 3 in the same period though he misses a lot of tests due to injuries. It's time to give younger player opportunities so we can make a team for next 10 years. These 3 shouldn't be given more chances but selectors are spineless.

As I type this Yashasvi is batting at 62. Unless they are played we will never know who can be next best for India.

Re: The Cricket Thread

So, our Captain has scored his second (only) overseas ton (Rohit made his debut in tests in 2013).

PS: Ashwin has the same number of overseas tons.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Innings win is good, but it also shows how far behind the West Indies are.
Jaiswal with a big hundred on debut was good, but I feel Ashwin should have been the MOTM.

Did not watch the match, was the situation so bad that he had to resort to such abuses?

Re: The Cricket Thread

Two test series going on and there couldn't be a starker contrast between the two.

The Ashes: Where England and Australia are closely matched and exchanging punches every session. This test is expected to rile things up further between the two sides

Ind Vs WI: Where India seems to pummel a club level team. Somehow this is still a snooze fest. Yawn.

There is a third one going on as well. Pakistan played their own version of Bazzball to beat SL at home in a close game. I was following it on cricinfo and it seemed like a good game.

Hope this is going to be the last of IND-WI Tests! In the future (hopefully immediate) Test Cricket will eventually be played among 5-6 nations if the ICC is serious about keeping this format alive.

That's a bit of a contradiction, isn't it?

To keep the format alive and well, you need to expand to more teams/countries, not reduce the number of teams. As it is cricket is hardly a world-spanning sport. To reduce the number of teams, will strangle it further. Look at Afghanistan. 10 years ago who would have given them a chance. Today, they're competitive. The biggest issue with the sport not spreading to more teams is smaller teams not getting enough matches with better opposition.

It's sad that the Windies have come to this, but that's a relatively easy fix. The ICC should prevail on the West Indies cricket board to manage their teams and treat their players better. Cutting them off from the world stage will make the decline terminal.

Overall, perhaps plug some of the money back into the game and have a healthier second-rung competition going on with the specific aim of getting 2-3 teams up to Test cricket level. Some ideas along those lines.

How will you keep Test Cricket alive when nobody is interested in playing the format? The likes of SL & Bangladesh can only be competitive at home. Afghanistan are competitive only in certain conditions & only in white ball formats not Tests! The major revenue & eyeballs are grabbed by the T20 format, that needs expansion to newer countries as they can be a lot more competitive in this format. Netherlands have qualified for the 50 over WC but they play very little cricket in between these WCs for reasons best known to the ICC. Let us not mix formats here. For Test Cricket to survive & ensure that it's even slightly entertaining I have no doubt that it should only be played among top 6 teams. Regarding West Indies, their own players don't listen to their Board how do you expect ICC to interfere in their affairs. WI if they get their act together can only be a force in T20s/ODIs not Tests.

This is a good suggestion.

I think the associate teams are very interested in playing any cricket. It's among the bigger teams where players have enough lucrative opportunities to play T20 leagues, that they are willing to forgo Test opportunities. So why not let those who want to play, play.

But still, that's progress from 10 years ago, right? So unless they get more Test opportunities, how will they get better?

I mean the ICC needs to influence the board. I think the board is the issue not the WI players who have been treated badly by their board.

Re: The Cricket Thread

It's not India's fault that West Indies team has declined over the course of past few years. What Selectors though should have done was send new faces and let them prove themselves, that would have even the ground also a bit.

Good to see Jaiswal and Mukesh Sharma getting chance, Gaikwad should have played instead of rohit sharma. Similarly replacement for Rahane and Kohli should have been sent to check them on world stage, was a great chance to play sarfaraz instead of kohli.

Re: The Cricket Thread

BCCI - are you listening, get this format for tests.

Get on board 10 test playing nation, divide them into 2 groups of top 5 and next 5.

Top 5 plays for the top spot/championship in first group, last in the group (5th team) gets relegated to the lower group.

The top in the second group advances to the first group and the last in the lower group goes out and let’s another lower ranked team to get into the lower group.

This way we can see competitive entertaining matches and not like rank 1 team playing with rank 10 team. An evenly contested matches are worth watching. That’s why more people are following Ashes than India vs WI tour.
