Re: The Cricket Thread

South Africa has won in Bangladesh, so this test basically becomes a do or die for us wrt the WTC final qualification. And I really don't have a good feeling about this looking at the way this pitch is behaving.

The entire plan was to prepare a square turner where batting would become tougher with each passing day, then hope to win the toss and bat which didn't happen.

Check the way Rachin Ravindra got bowled even after being so well set, he just got a peach from nowhere. All thanks to the pitch.

I won't be surprised if we end up conceding a 100 run first innings lead tomorrow. Santner and Ajaz Patel are excellent spinners and I fear this pitch is royally going to backfire on us (just my hunch watching Gill survive one close leave where he almost got bowled, and one potential plumb lbw which he survived thanks to a little inside edge).

Re: The Cricket Thread

I think India have the upper hand today, mostly thanks to Washington Sundar's 7-for. He single handedly triggered a NZ collapse from 197/3 to 259/10. Rohit's dismissal to Southee was frustrating. Day 2 is usually the best day for batting in India and I expect Gill & Jaiswal to show why they are considered the future of India's batting.

That's unfair to Sundar man! Washi gets the credit for setting up Rachin. In fact, all of Sundar's wickets were a result of his two card trick of straighter ones + off spinners. He has improved a lot with his bowling and should get immense credit for that.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Washington bowled really well. Small variations and movement is where you get wickets and he set them very well. Looking forward to his batting as well.

Gill is lucky to have survived the session. Hope the ball not being very old doesn't make their pacers a challenge tomorrow at the start of play.

I think India have finally found a replacement for Ashwin once he retires in the coming years! Washington really came out of the syllabus for the Kiwis, I don't think they were expecting him to play.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Comical how poor contemporary batting technique is against spin bowling. All you need is a competent bowler who can hit good length ball after ball and the batsman will do the rest.

Batsmen in this session seem intimidated before facing their first ball, against spinners!

Re: The Cricket Thread

Wow, we might just be facing a series loss. Sri Lanka made mockery of our batsman with spin in ODI and now New Zealand doing the same, such a shame. This also is our full strength batting squad, this does not bode well for us.

Kohli fails again, Rohit sharma has been failing for ages. Kohli atleast always was an aggressive captain in Test, such a sad state.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Although would be disappointed with a series loss, will be happy with us not reaching the WTC finals. We know what the result will be. There is some mental issue with our team, fatigue maybe. It affected KL first and now everyone

Re: The Cricket Thread

One thing that stood out from the 1st innings in BLR and now in this test match is lack of application.

Really quite shocking to see the top and middle order fold for next to nothing. You’d think they would have learned from the 1st innings in BLR.

The rest of this match will be spent catching up, just as we did in BLR.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Looks like India avoided the follow-on. Being reduced to 10 batsmen after Rohit took over (Rohit being in the test team for his captaincy, fielding, and sometimes bowling), now it is up to the bowlers to put some runs on board and then summon their bowling wizardry spells to cast on the opposition.

Now on Kohli: He made 7500 runs in the first 9 years of his test career and around 1500 runs in the next 4 years. Currently, he is playing at 50% of his career average. Will he reach 10,000 test runs? Get a triple hundred?

Re: The Cricket Thread

It's interesting how the England v Pakistan game is unfolding similar to India vs NZ. England got bowled out for 267 after winning the toss while NZ ended up with 259. In response Pakistan are 143/4 while we are at 107/7. Can't believe I'm going to say this, but Pakistan's top order are batting against spin better than we are.

Ian Smith said on commentary that this collapse is worse than 46 all out. After watching Santner (primarily white ball bowler) & Philips (part timer) spin us out, I can't say I disagree.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Clearly the Indian team has lost the art of batting in Test cricket thanks to the overdose of shorter formats!

India are 9 down for 142 and with a 100 or so lead New Zealand has this game in the bag.

Our batting only works on flat tracks that don’t have anything in them for the bowlers. If there’s any help from the pitch, be it seam, swing or spin, we’re doomed.

Re: The Cricket Thread

First Series Loss in 12yrs incoming! I would say this could be a good thing considering the fact that our ageing superstars (King or Hitman as referred to by fans) are very very average in recent times.

Modern day batters don't look to grind out the Opposition which is the main trait in Test Cricket, thanks to advent of T20 Cricket! There is just too much of a tendency to play a big shot/release shot.

Fatigue? After lockdown, for the first time all the players had 6 weeks off recently & some don't even play each & every series! We cannot even blame KL for this loss as he isn't even in the Team.

Only twice has India managed to overturn a 100+ lead and win the match while batting second.

Once in 1976 at Port of Spain against WI. And the other time in 2001 at Eden Gardens against Australia, after being made to follow on. (What an amazing match that was!)

(Thanks Cricinfo! )

Safe to assume that we have lost this test match.

Re: The Cricket Thread

NZ wants to finish this in 3 days India played slow and couldn't get the runs before the ball got older.

Sometimes you have to play slow to fast bowlers on pitch that suits them and wait for spinners.
Sometimes you have to score everything off them before the spinners come

Statistics never lie and those 2 games are the ones in the 0.1% range where something rare/unexpected happened. Which is why the game is called Test cricket, a real test for skill and mental toughness.
