That's true.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Rohit Sharma announces retirement from Test Cricket !! Sacked (?), something was brewing up already behind the scene.

His buddy Abhishek Nayar has already been shown the door.

Probably axe on Kohli’s head now. Suddenly Gambhir is looking gambhir in getting the house in order.

Eventually english summer looks a bit bright and sunny now.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Good call and make no mistake he has been dropped, just a graceful exit has been given, well man deserved that much. He will probably be tested in ODI arena for a year, and if not able to do well, would be replaced and dropped by mid of next year. That will give new captain a year, I think he still wants that ICC ODI trophy.

Kohli still has hunger, not sure who they are planning to make captain in Test, but I don't mind them giving back captaincy to Kohli for two years again (One WTC cycle). Should they take a gamble and give Jaiswal the captaincy, ideally Bumrah should be default choice, but he is more injured then fit.

Re: The Cricket Thread

It's a wise decision to retire now rather than risk being dropped from the team - though honestly, this decision feels a year or two late.
As I've always said, Rohit was never a natural Test batter. He should now focus on his fitness and aim to perform strongly in ODIs (Especially longer inningses). Since there's no impact sub option in ODIs, those "selfless" small innings won't help much if he intends to stay on until the next ODI World Cup.

Very good call by Rohit to get retired before he would have got more humiliation in the coming England series. It purely my speculation but seems he was forced by the selectors.
Anyway, welcome news and hope to see Sai Sudarshan taking his place in the team.

Sai Sudarshan is a great choice. He slays feels like a pure cricketer forced to play T20. Another player who has caught my attention is Angkrish Raghuvanshi. He was the highest run getter in 2022 under 19 World Cup. All his strokes are so effortless.

Rohit's sacking was imminent, good call by him to retire & save face and then let his PR machinery do its job! Virat Kohli should also be sacked for first 2 Tests in England. If he's really hungry & desperate he'll play County Cricket & make a comeback into the team. But its difficult now considering the Selectors love mixing formats & he's done well this IPL.

I agree with your observation. Both players have a no-nonsense approach, focused on their game without any flamboyance or theatrics on the field. However, Angkrish still needs more time and experience in the Ranji Trophy and other domestic tournaments to be considered for the national team. Sai, on the other hand, seems ready for the big stage and would quietly fit into the team.

Bumrah is likely to be the default choice for Test captaincy, but I’d still love to see Kohli taking the role for another year or so. The team needs his leadership and batting now more than ever, especially with the batting lineup still not fully settled.

I agree we need Kohli's batting however not his captaincy. Somehow, he is consistent and performs in IPL and then one good innings in an International Series. He should be made to play at number 3 especially with all the inexperienced batters in the team. We have quite a few domestic performers who need to be awarded. Ruturaj if fit to be tried in Tests. Sai is in good form and looks technically correct. Karun Nair to be given an opportunity to play at number 4 or 5.

Sai
Jaiswal
Kohli
Karun
Gill
Hardik
Dhruv (wk)
Jadeja
Bhumrah (c)
Shami
Krishna

Re: The Cricket Thread

I'd love to see Kohli return as captain for another WTC cycle and reignite the fierce competitive spirit that defined India's Test cricket a few years ago. It would also be great to have Shreyas Iyer back in the squad—he could slot into Kohli’s position both in the batting lineup and eventually as captain.

But then again, this is the BCCI we're talking about— So don’t be shocked if they hand over the captaincy to Pant instead. After all, he’s a “once-in-a-generation” talent, right? He may fumble under pressure, but no worries! We’ll just use the next 50–60 Tests as his captaincy internship program

Re: The Cricket Thread

Rohit’s retirement announcement yesterday seemed like he was sort of forced into it. I believe he wanted to take a call post the England Test series or at least after 2-3 tests in England, but some articles say that selectors were not on board with this idea. And I think this is absolutely the right thing to do. Rohit has never been a proper test opener and he doesnt have the technique and patience for overseas red ball conditions at all.

As far as captaincy is concerned, i would think that the right man is Kohli, maybe for 2-3 years and then hand it over to the next generation. But this is a distant possibility and i dont think Kohli and neither BCCI is going this way. The 2nd logical option is KL Rahul, he is in decent form, has a guaranteed spot in the team. But i dont know how he will handle the additional pressure and we neither know how capable he is as a leader for tests. Then it comes down to Gill, again too early is my gut feeling, he has to first prove his place in the team, especially in overseas conditions. What if he fails miserably with the bat in England? Do you keep giving him more opportunities because he is the captain? And at this point I think Pant doesnt have a very solid case for test captaincy, would be very surprised if it happens. Down to Gill and KL if you ask me. Lastly BCCI shouldn’t try to please Bumrah by making him the captain, he is going to probably play 10 out of 20 tests in an year, so not right to do this.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Rumor mill is a buzzed that Gill will be given Test captaincy. He has 35 average which isn't a good record in tests for a top order batter and he isn't even a permanent member. Bumrah won't be selected cos he can't play every series due to workload management. That leaves Pant and Jaiswal. Jaiswal is new and hasn't done any captaincy so won't be given. It will be between Gill and Pant in the end.

Pant is our best test batter since sometime. However his captaincy is ridiculous. I don't see good times soon for the test team.

Also, I wish they had shown Kohli the door too for test team. He has even worse record than Rohit for last 5 years. For next WTC cycle team should have started fresh. Maybe England will be his last series. Soft hearted bcci made sure he gets farewell in front of his home crowd

I think it will be Gill for reasons like looking ahead, young captain for future etc though I’m not fully convinced he’s ready or deserves it at the moment.

Also remember that BCCI is considering him to be the de facto next superstar replacing Kohli which is far from the truth right now

The second alternative may be K L Rahul as an interim captain for the next say 3 years. He is someone who can work well with Kohli, Pant, Bumrah and Gill.

Exactly my thoughts. While he may have shown promise, it has just been that. He needs to put in the hard yards and get some runs in difficult conditions. Too early to burden him with captaincy. I would rather prefer KL gets it now and they groom Gill over the next couple of years.
