Re: The Cricket Thread

A worthy win under an able captain. Congratulations to the South African team. Took them 27 years to lay their hands on a second ICC trophy.

Given the past history, this was a true David vs Goliath moment and deserves a big celebration!
I hope South Africa finally get the monkey off their backs and go on to win more titles.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Absolutely thrilling cricket from both the teams! A brilliant showcase of skill, grit, and determination by the Aussies and the Proteas.

A truly fitting Final to cap off the WTC cycle.

South Africa have finally broken the psychological barrier in an ICC tournament — a historic and well-deserved victory!

Outstanding cricket.
Memorable win.
Top-class commentary throughout the match.

Special thanks to Star Sports for bringing together such a stellar panel of commentators.

World Test Championship! Aiden Markram’s epic 136 and Temba Bavuma’s grit seal a 5-wicket win over Australia, ending SA’s 27-year ICC trophy drought!

Re: The Cricket Thread

South Africa ignore Aussie sledges to go from chokers to champions.

Quote:
Aiden Markram resumed on an unbeaten century but like many of his team-mates, had a restless night at their London hotel pondering how things might pan out.
Even the sleeping tablets he took could not help him switch off.
Australia's players saw it as an opportunity, too.

Quote:
They picked at this particular South Africa scab with their verbal armoury of salty snipes when a tense chase began.

"Whilst we were batting, we could hear the Aussies using that dreaded word, choke," South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma told BBC Test Match Special.
Quote:
It's been years since we've overcome a final, we've been etched in history. Now we're part of something that has never been done
"It would be great to never hear that word [choke] again, that's for sure," said Markram, who went to the stands and downed a pint of beer with an old school friend to celebrate.

"To have got the job done and to get rid of that, it's a big thing for this team."

Bavuma is South Africa's first black African batter, first black African to score a Test century, as well as the country's first black African captain.

Re: The Cricket Thread

This looks more likely to be the playing XI tomorrow. Will be a stern test for Gill considering his poor record in challenging conditions!

KL Rahul
Sudarshan
Gill
Pant
Karun Nair
Jadeja
Shardul
Bumrah
Siraj

That does actually look like a solid team. Let's hope for a good contest

Prediction time guys!

I say, with a heavy heart, 4-1 England.

My money is on 4-0 in England's favour. We might draw the 4th, or more likely, the 5th test.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Unless the weather intervenes, I don't think either side has the batters capable of batting long enough for a draw.

I think, for us, it depends on how our bowlers perform in English conditions.

I’ll be optimistic here and say that we’ll win 3–2, but for that to happen, we need to perform as a unit, with a lot depending on our bowlers.

Horrible defeat in the first test and then recover for a 2-1 win or a 2-2 draw.

Forget about a draw, most Test matches will get over by Day 4! I am happy to see fresh faces in the XI, atleast we won't have to keep seeing Virat Kohli nicking balls outside his off-stump.
