Wonder if it's time we start grooming other fast bowlers. B Thampi, Sandeep Sharma and S Kaul are the only names I could think of.
As a surprise package, we could have called Sree (not) Santh to Australia

Re: The Cricket Thread

Even I am surprised by the exclusion of Kuldeep for this match. He may have been a handful to deal with for some of the Aussie batsmen.

If only we had latched onto the chances from Labu..things would be looking far different.

Clearly, our Medical, Wellness and Fitness support teams are going to take a lot of fire when they come back. Its hard to believe that so many of our players, especially the fast bowlers are all injured. Something isn't working. It can't happen that the entire lot is carrying niggles - Ishant, Bhuvi, Shami, Umesh, Bumrah. I think Saini will somehow grin and bear it and bowl this match.

Sree could've run/swum from Kochi to Gabba had he been called.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Kartik Tyagi could have been a much better option than Thakur. He's been bowling in the nets and was available to be picked.

Shastri doesn't have a brain. And what have Arun and Sridhar been doing? These people need to be sacked.

We need really good professional Bowling and Batting coaches. Especially bowling since with the weight of our batsmen, not sure who is going to point out the flaws of Kohli, Rohit and Pujara. They could look someone from international teams to join us. We need someone to train our bowlers to be more consistent, keep the emotions in check and try to bowl with some strategy. No one comes to my mind immediately however surely there would be good candidates.

Not sure if we have coaches who can actually improve bowling/batting ! Bowing the right line and length depends on the bowlers. Also, even the best will lack rhythm on certain days and cant help. Practice is whats needed and little common sense. That is where bowlers like McGrath, Warne etc excelled. Not sure the bowlers who you have mentioned can take wickets.

Re: The Cricket Thread

After the ghosts of the first test match, India has recovered well and shown extreme resiliency. Reducing Australia to 5/240 with a bowling attack that has a handful of matches is incredible.

Btw, did anyone see the Lankans gift their wickets to the English bowlers? It was the most comical sight I've seen in a while.

Besides being over bowled, I think there are some physiological differences between people of different races. Diets and conditioning from a young age play a big factor too. Pakistan (between the 1980s-2000s) has been an exception being the only country in South Asia to produce great fast bowlers.

Here's some advice from Zaheer Khan:

Rohit has got 2 IPL hat-tricks. Unless he has some injury concerns, Rahane should be brave in throwing the ball to Rohit for a few overs on every day of Test cricket.

Surprisingly, the use of part-timers in Test cricket has reduced. Marnus has bowled a couple of overs. Williamson & Root don't bowl much these days.

Rohit does not bowl off spin anymore after a finger injury.

Re: The Cricket Thread

It seems Saini is now injured and is going for scans for his groin injury.

Thakur has also left the field. Hopefully, for just a precaution. Going by this rate, Rohit Sharma might very well have to bowl. Fa(s)t ones at that. lol

Re: The Cricket Thread

Even Australian fast bowlers have injured themselves just after starting. It might be how they have managed and science that helps them. Pat Cummins runs really hard to bowl !

I remember Holding or Marshal talking about the gym regimes of recent times. They said all they did was run and run around the stadium. Hope Virat is not advising his team in the gym

Re: The Cricket Thread

Despite another injury, this time Saini, the bowling has managed to get 10 Aussie wickets, but 369 is a decent total. Now, let's see what kind of reply the Indian batting can give, fingers crossed. Other than the rare odd/unpredictable bounce I don't think the pitch is doing too much yet, so it will be more a test of skill, patience and nerves!

Re: The Cricket Thread

This morning it has been good lines from fast bowlers and pretty decent to bundle them out near 350. Surprised with Washington sundar bowling middle and leg. But that's a good tactics to troubles Aussies I feel. Key is batting now.

Re: The Cricket Thread

We were going good but an unnecessary shot by Rohit gifted a wicket to Lyon in in 100th test. "What was he thinking!!" was my reaction. We need a big score from one of the top5 to come even to the Australian score of 369.

Re: The Cricket Thread

I really hope Rahane & Pujara can build a huge partnership here. That way Pant can come with a set platform and work his magic.

This test is going to be tough, but I hope India doesn't start playing for a draw too early. Remember what Pant did last game? We need to play with a winning midset for as long as possible.

It was Holding. I clearly remember him advising bowlers to keep bowling more in practice to improve their fitness. A bowler needs to work his muscles in the rhythmic manner as he would in a match. I don't think gyms help too much in professional sport.

In the era of T20, not too many cricketers play country cricket. Ashwin & Pujara are the only ones who still play a few county games over the last few seasons.

Disappointing for someone who knows how to play long innings and score the big hundreds in ODI cricket.
