Re: The Cricket Thread

A few days ago, former captain of Sri Lanka Arjuna Ranatunga reckoned that playing against "second string" Indian team is an insult to Sri Lankan cricket. Yesterday's match result has made me admire his clairvoyance!

Now this former captain will say, they too fielded a second string cricket team.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Ishan Kishen & Prithvi Shaw have assumed this to be 6 match T20 series, atleast we're guaranteed entertainment! Bowling attack was the usual with no fresh faces in the XI.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Whatever the result, this is nostalgic of the late 90's Ind vs SL (apart from some antics of Ranatunga on the field)

Loved the way D Chaher played out the spinner in the 47th over

Re: The Cricket Thread

What a match! An absolute thriller.
Forget the opposition, it is only of the best lower order batting displays you will ever see. Great temperament from Bhuvi and Deepak, fantastic victory!!

Re: The Cricket Thread

Awesome, such a famous victory, not necessarily one that will be remembered due to quality of opposition, but due to never die attitude of the team. Love the belief that our players have got, thanks to IPL.

SKY might be the final missing piece to the long due missing middle order player puzzle.

India did very well to win the match yesterday. Still struggling to understand how Sri Lanka lost the match yesterday!!

Awesome game. Better than one sided affairs. We need to see how the young ones withstand pressure once they become a regular. Like Sanju Samson not being able to perform in the second half of IPL usually.

Hardik should start concentrating on T20 only going forward, so he can bat and bowl full quota. For One day they need to plan with Shardul or Deepak or groom someone else like Arjun T.

Rahul Dravid should only work with under 19 and not the national team. Captain calls the most of it in National side, so current combo of Ravi Sastri and Kohli should do with better bowling and batting consultant.

Re: The Cricket Thread

India were hopelessly out of the game at one stage, it really was a surprise that we won. I hope our taillenders in England were watching this game, Chahar showed how occupation of the crease is so important, not to forget batting sensibly & not unnecessarily playing big shots when the game can be won taking singles!

Re: The Cricket Thread

We needed this shot in the game, perhaps even deserved a loss. I think the narrative of "fearless cricket", "new generation" are terms which a lot of these players have started believing in and are playing as per label and not situation. Some of these youngsters need more guidance if they are being inducted early (e.g. Ishan Kishan. Does anyone remember equally talented folks keeper-batsmen like Saurabh Tiwari who have fallen by the wayside). In the other hand you have people like Deepak Chahar who have had to build temperament over 10 years in domestic circuit and then it shows in clutch situations.

Fortunately we have the best guy for the job in Dravid around this.

On a separate note, Indian bowling seems to be pretty off right now. Hate to see what loss of confidence has done to Kuldeep Yadav who is a bowler with an X-factor which not many have.

Re: The Cricket Thread

I don’t think Ishan Kishan has the temperament to play at number 3 in 50 over set up. The team management should look to switch Pandey and Kishan.

India should also look to groom someone else for the H Pandya role and that shouldn’t be K Pandya. A medium pacer who can bat a bit. I don’t know who could that be though.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Wow, what a victory. With all due respect, the Sri Lankan bowlers made Deepak Chahar looks like Sir Viv.

India has got a fabulous team, but I feel batsmen need to take more responsibility and channel their aggression. It is nice to see Shaw scoring these 40s of 20-odd balls, but his real value as an opener in 50-over (and test match) cricket will be defined by how many big hundreds he can score. It'd be nice to see him score 150s.

Re: The Cricket Thread

This has been a good match for the debutants. Its not that we would win or lose the match however it is the exposure been given to these new generation cricketers. Sakaria is like just 8 match old in List A and now playing with an Indian jersey. It is going to be a very good learning curve for Sakaria and co when they tour with Kohli, Rohit, Bhumrah & Ishant.
Would like to see below team playing an ODI against a full strength Aus, NZ or SA.

R Sharma
P Shaw
V Kohli
S Iyer
S K Yadav
S Samson (w)
H Pandya
R Jadeja
M Siraj
J Bhumrah
C Sakaria

Head Coach: R Dravid.

PS: We still need a good back up for H Pandya & R Jadeja. A genuine all rounder like J Kallis.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Don't think Manish Pandey will get anymore chances in the ODI format. Perhaps we've seen the last of him. Nice of the team management to hand out caps to the 5 debutants, but I felt they overdid a bit. This apparently is the last ODI India plays in this calendar year!

Yes, Manish Pandey may not get anymore chances especially with S Iyer in consideration. He got enough opportunities and to be honest hasnt done too bad however neither too good. This was a good chance to play well and score a century to have an outside chance of being in the circle of trust.

This most probably would be the kast ODI of 2021 for India unless they arrange SL or BNG or Zimbabwe to tour India
