Re: The Cricket Thread

Wonderful to see Wriddhiman Saha do so well in the opportunity given to him in the game against the Delhi Capitals. He really is a class act and has unfortunately not got the accolades or chances he deserves. In addition to his accomplished batting, he is perhaps the most gifted and technically sound wicketkeeper in world cricket today. I hope he cements his place in the Tests for sure and is also given opportunities in limited overs cricket seeing how explosive he can be.

He was never given his due in the Indian team and for that I don’t know whom to blame !! Rishab Pant was played ahead of him when he came back from injury and that tells you where the priority of the team is. Wriddhiman Saha is arguably the finest wicket keeper in world cricket today.

He is a technically sound batsman but has been stereotyped to the hilt. We here in Calcutta know his capabilities as a batsman as because he has achieved phenomenal success in T-20 matches played here locally. He has played some brilliant innings in the IPL as well but hardly gets to show his play on a regular basis.

Taking Rishab Pant in the test team is a howler and I know why he is in the team. I won’t be surprised if he is played ahead of Saha in Australia !!

Re: The Cricket Thread

Schedule is out for the Australia tour. Just 1 warm-up game before the Test Series!

https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/_...warm-match-scg

Btw, which Sony channels broadcasts English commentary? Last time made a mistake & was forced to listen to Hindi commentary during the WI tour!

Pant has got Test 100's in Australia & England, something which no other Indian keeper has managed. His success in Tests has surprised everyone. Everyone expected him to be a roaring success in white ball format but now he's been dropped from those squads. Saha is a superlative keeper especially on Indian tracks where Pant's shoddy glovework can be exposed.

That's bad and will probably result in an opening test loss due to lack of acclimatization

Selection of openers will again be an issue and hope there isn't experimentation in this series as well - Mayank, Dhawan, Prithwi, KL Rahul are all contenders for the 2 spots.

I'm guessing Pant will be a backup keeper in case Saha is unfit/injured. There's no question about Saha being the specialist and best Test Wicketkeeper and a decent batsman as well.

Of course Virat and Ravi Bhai may do things differently that may go against our logic/assumptions!

You will get the English version on Sony Six channel. Also, a wicket keeper is a much specialised position in tests than in white ball cricket. Just because Pant scored those two centuries abroad, doesn’t mean he can get away with the pathetic wicket keeping. Of course, Shastri and Kohli have other ideas and that is why he is in the team !!

Wriddhiman has also scored and batted in challenging conditions abroad. He is much more technically correct than Pant. His keeping is world class and Pant doesn’t even come close. But then, those stats don’t matter anymore !!

Re: The Cricket Thread

Pant will play as the first choice keeper. I read somewhere that BCCI mentioned Saha as Pants understudy for the Australia tour.

I am not saying he should, I am saying he will.

I read this a couple of times. We are not in good hands.

I get the sense there's now so many players available, Kohli (not known for the best judgement of selecting teams anyway) may not do the best job of ensuring there's the right combination across formats.

They will say Saha is the first choice keeper but they will play Pant. And this is how a difference between Kumble and Shastri plays out !!

Re: The Cricket Thread

Have they said that Saha is the first choice keeper recently? I don't recall reading it. They are calling Saha as Pant's understudy, so obviously Pant is the first choice to start.

Re: The Cricket Thread

In February 2020, Pant was Saha’s understudy and which was logical since Saha is way senior to him. By the time, the lockdown ended and the Australian team announced, someone from PTI had a brain freeze moment to call Saha as Pant’s understudy !!

That says a lot about those in the selection committee
I hope the experimentation of various players, combinations, batting positions doesn't start yet again through the series costing us 2 to 3 tests before they finally find something that works and pull one back and end up losing the series anyways. This has been a Kohli-Shastri pattern now.

Don't think so. Everyone knows Virat & Ravi Shastri prefer the explosive batting prowess of Pant in overseas conditions since our tail cannot contribute much. Currently, according to the physio Pant is overweight & last match Saha had a groin niggle, lets hope its not serious.

I don't think so. Both of them toured NZ in Feb 20 but Pant played ahead of Saha.

That’s because Saha was coming off a long injury lay off and hence Pant was played supposedly. At least Indian express called him an understudy and I tend to agree. Saha can’t ever be Pant’s understudy, it has to be the other way round. Saha is way more senior and experienced than Pant to be called his understudy !!
