Huh - while traveling means - for checking in to an airline or train etc. I haven't been asked for my PAN card by an airline or a train because the Govt insisted they do so. For eg, while traveling, if I go a bar and they ask for age proof - I would consider that request for age proof a drinking related request rather than a travel related request.

How do you buy your flight tickets?

If you are buying from a Travel agent by using cash (>25,000), then you need to provide your pan card.

bblost, if you have read some novels about communist countries during cold war time, you will be able to understand what carboy is trying to say.

Yes, but you have the option of not buying it with cash. And yeah - if you pay by card or cheque, then the bank knows your PAN number. But that's not my point. PAN Number is not a national id card.

I think carboy is worried that random police constables would ask him to prove his identity.

That he will be expected to carry some sort of an id-card on him at all times.
Just to prove who he is.

The fear of bio-metrics is that the id-card becomes a part of your own body and hence it cannot be left at home.

I am not sure if that is a bad thing. Although for the record I have not registered for Aadhar nor do I intend to.

"The new law seeks to create a National Identification Authority of India, which will oversee implementation of the Aadhaar project. It also seeks to define the penalties in case of misuse of data collected under the project."

You mean it is not in place now?!?!

Aadhaar de-duplication myth busted. Any answers, Mr. Nilekani?

One person from Kerala enrolled and successfully received two Aadhaar numbers. This raises serious question over the de-duplication theory and practices of UIDAI.

Re: Nationwide UID - will it work?

Finally my number has arrived, after nearly two and half years of enrolling and complaining everywhere.
I got a message from pgportal saying my complaint is resolved. On checking the website, I found my Aadhar number there.Promptly jumped to Aadhar site and generated the e-aadhar.

Dont know if pgportal had a role to play as few family members who had not complained to pgportal also got their numbers. I guess a whole block of backlog was cleared recently.

For me, this is not relevant. I don't want Aadhar even if they made it super secure, unforgeable, uncrackable and FIPS 140-2 Level 4 certified. An insecure Aadhar is a good thing. It will make the Govt less confident about make it compulsory for all kinds of stuff till we end up with a "Papers, Please" country.

Personally, I am more worried about my data falling into the Indian Govt's hands than into CIAs hands.
