No need to apologise sir, indeed (though inadvertently) was a "What an Idea sirji" find!

I think the main premise of UIDAI is what our babus do not like. They will only confirm, and not provide information from their database.

It is a problem. They require every use of Aadhar for ID validation to be channeled through them. And they keep an electronic record of it, with no information forthcoming on the access or retention policies applicable to this data.

Re: Nationwide UID - will it work?

Plenty of countries now applying biometrics for national ids.

We just seem to be ahead of the curve, for once. Kudos to the Govt for that.

And Aadhaar is as mandatory or not as Ration card, there is no law that governs the latter either.

Yes, Aadhaar cuts out the middleman, something babus dont like, they like to control the data & be the power center.

For my grandfather, only six fingers had a clear fingerprint. The rest had smoothened out because of his age.

So its okay if a few prints dont appear. If there is a problem in the data being provided during registration for aadhar, the process wont go till the point of generating the acknowledgement. Since you've got the acknowledgement, you just have to wait for the card to arrive.
Thats good to hear, many thanks for the info

C'mon. A list of 15 countries - out of 193 UN members, to have a baseline. And that too, let us see:

1. Australia - Only for foreign visitors
2. Brazil - national ID
3. Canada - has "begun research", in "border security & immigration" - ie, planned only for visitors
4. Gambia - national ID
5. Germany - looks like only for passports and foreign visitors
6. Iraq - national ID
7. Israel - currently trial period, enrolment is optional, has got opponents
8. Italy - only in police force, looks like
9. Netherlands - Only on passports issued after 21/9/2009
10. New Zealand - Only for arriving air travellers at 3 airports. Just face recognition
11. Norway - only on passports
12. Ukraine - only on passports
13. UK - used in schools to account for their equivalent of mid-day meal scheme
14. USA - only for foreign visitors

Gambia? Iraq?? Seriously, we are planning our future based on what works in these places?

Ration cards are legalized by the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, section 3(2). Aadhar has no legal backing. The draft of the bill that would have legitimized Aadhar was rejected by the parliamentary standing committee for finance way back in 2011.

Highly speculative, but worrying nevertheless:

"Intelligence agencies that had forewarned the government two years ago about the vulnerability of Aadhaar data due to involvement of foreign players are livid over latest NSA disclosures that reveal the US is prying on biometric database"

Re: Nationwide UID - will it work?

In my last gas cylinder refill, I paid the subsidized amount - some 4XX/- . In the previous refill , I had paid the full market value and later got the subsidy credited to my account.

When asked on the change , the delivery boy said with the UPA government gone , Aadhar has also gone away.

I find it really surprising that thousands of crores were spent on a project with no legislative backing.

RIP Aadhar.

Re: Nationwide UID - will it work?

Now its NDA's National ID card which will kill UPA's Aadhaar card.

End of day, people's money is wasted one way or other with least ROI.

This is the NPR (National Population Register), another legacy of the UPA (not NDA). It figured in the turf war between Manmohan Singh (Planning Commission/Aadhar) and Chidambaram (Home Ministry/NPR) - one of the reasons Aadhar didn't get the legislative backing it needed.

I still don't like it (it is also compulsory), but it addresses one of the key concerns that some had against Aadhar - it actually verifies citizenship.

Is it allowed by the constitution to make it compulsory?

Why should verify citizenship - it wasn't a citizenship card.

Re: Nationwide UID - will it work?

USP of Aadhaar is its superb technology with Biometric verification.

NPR is just another id like Voters Id, Ration card, PAN etc. Question is how do you AUTHENTICATE the Id - that is where Aadhaar vision & technology is so good.

Will be highly churlish & pathetic if BJP kills it only out of spite for INC & not in national interst.
