Re: The Credit Card Thread

I had a weird experience with the SBI Card. I applied for SBI Prime through the Yono app. Initially said it's approved, and then more than a month later, it updated as declined because it doesn't meet internal criteria.

And this is the second time this has happened, first in 2019 and then I thought it must be because of my relatively moderate credit score. The most baffling thing is that there is no way to redress this or to understand the exact reason.

Re: The Credit Card Thread

Guys, need advice on retaining 2nd card. I have SBI Cashback card which was acquired couple of years back when I had HDFC Bank Regalia. Now in last few months I got upgraded to Infinia and hence all the usage has been moved to it. With Gyftr coupons the benefit is much higher on Infinia vs SBI Cashback.

So does it make sense to retain SBI Cashback, considering it is a card with annual fee?

Re: The Credit Card Thread

I got this message from Std chartered today. I have always used Amazon to pay off my credit card bills. As a banker, I don't see why SC should have a problem with how I bring my credit cards up to date. This is not BBPS related either.

Re: The Credit Card Thread

With Stan C Super Value Titanium CC, if I fill the tank which comes to approx Rs. 4000/- and make two separate payments of Rs. 1999/- each then will I be getting 5% cashback for both?

Yes. You can always split. But do note that this card (like all other fuel cards) has monthly cap on fuel rewards. It’s measly Rs 200/- per month. That means just Rs 4000/- worth of fuel per month!

Yup. Got the same message for my Standard Chartered credit card today. It seems detrimental. I am not able to understand the logic of Standard Chartered why they would want to do this.

That's really measly! Do you or anyone know of a better CC for fuel? I have 2 diesel cars which need a full tank every month. Later part of the year, I go on few road trips so will need atleast 5-6 full tanks a month during those few months.

I am planning to buy on Magnus Burgundy, entirely on the card.

Total Accor points by Jan 2025 = 1.6L + 1.34L = 2.94L
Each Accor point approximately has a value of ₹1.8
So, 2.94L * 1.8 = ₹5,29,200

So basically, I can book Accor hotels worth approx ₹5.3L by Jan 2025.
My cost = 35,400 + 33,000 = ₹68,400

So, I'm getting a return of ₹5,29,200 - ₹68,400 = ₹4,60,800
Ideally, that should work; I have made large MagnusB spends in a single month (basically clubbed all yearly payments in one month, 20 lkh+ ) and got correct points, including accelerated points. I have also done point transfers and did international travel at a fraction of the cost.

Few points

1) Check if you have 22lkh+ limit on the MB card
2) If you use full credit limit, it WILL hit the CIBIL score
3) Axis being axis, send a written email to RM/ CC about your usage plan in advance and ask them to come back if they see the problem.

Note:- Axis MB has been a wonderful card for genuine users for many years. Because it was exploited, the Axis team is now overprotective and taking action which might impact genuine cases.

Re: The Credit Card Thread

Please suggest a good credit card for BMS BOGO free offer ? We had axis magnus card which had this removed. Looking for a card which would give a minimum of 500 off.

Also which might be best card for IOCL petrol pump spends ?

I would recommend the American Express Gold Card where you can earn 1 Membership Rewards Point for every Rs. 50 spent on fuel, with no monthly cap. Plus you will earn 1,000 bonus points on 6 transactions of ₹1000 each every calendar month.

With some back of the napkin maths, you could earn the following with just 4 tankfuls of ₹4000 each:

4*(4000/50) = 320
320 + 1000 bonus points = 1320

You can also boost your fuel spends by routing it through Amazon Pay as you can buy Amazon Pay vouchers at 5x reward points which is fantastic value. Say you buy ₹16,000 Amazon Pay vouchers a month for fuel only then instead of 320 points you'll get 1600 points which works out to 2600 points a month including the bonus!

And all of this is not taking into account any other spends you do on the card (there are loads of retailers you can buy vouchers for at 5x, or just use Amazon Pay as that is accepted in most places). So you are easily looking at several thousand points a month upwards depending on how much you spend.

Then you can redeem your points for Marriott Bonvoy hotel stays (1:1 ratio which is fantastic value) starting at just 10,000 points onwards including tax (sometimes even less), airline frequent flyer programs, or even keep it simple and choose vouchers for hotels/Amazon/Flipkart etc (but not as rewarding):

24,000 MR points / 24 Karat Gold Collection: (you can choose any of them)

- Taj voucher worth Rs. 14,000
- Shoppers Stop voucher worth Rs. 10,000
- Tata Cliq voucher worth Rs. 9,000
- Tanishq voucher worth Rs. 9,000
- Amazon voucher worth Rs. 8,000
- Flipkart voucher worth Rs. 8,000
- Reliance Digital voucher worth Rs. 8,000

18,000 MR points / 18 Karat Gold Collection: (you can choose any of them)

- Taj voucher worth Rs. 9,000
- Shoppers Stop voucher worth Rs. 7,000
- Tata Cliq voucher worth Rs. 7,000
- Myntra voucher worth Rs. 7,000
- Amazon voucher worth Rs. 6,000
- Flipkart voucher worth Rs. 6,000
- Reliance Digital voucher worth Rs. 6,000

This is a great way to get into the Amex points game, but if you try and put all your spends on various Amex cards it can be extremely rewarding. Let me know if you want more info on how this works.

Happy to share a referal code if you would like one to apply, you'll get some bonus points on sign up and also the first year fee is very low at only ₹1000.

Happy to answer any other questions you may have too, just let me know.

Amex acceptability at bunks is iffy at best. In the bunks near my place - the acceptance was OK the past several years, but around an year back, the acceptance dipped dramatically with the usual "amex machine not working" excuse. Have switched to other card post that.

If one is considering card swipes for road trips, IOCL based cards would be the best bet since they have the maximum pumps.

@s4ch
Do you mean to say that we can pay at bunks by redeeming the amazon pay vouchers from the amazon app directly or did you mean purchasing petrol vouchers?

I too received the same and when tried to gather details found out the below information from a web. Hope it helps since i made a payment recently via Cred and it went through.

"Previously apps used to work on IMPS NEFT method to process CC bills.

Now apps have moved to BBPS system, but SC isn't BBPS enabled that's why this email.

Apps like CheQ, Cred, Mobikwik, etc still supporting NEFT method, so you can pay bills on these apps without worrying"

Not sure about the acceptance but since I got a Amex Platinum travel card I have been using at all salt of joints like CNG only or regular bunks and I have never run into a situation where it was denied, may change as per geo location but In my observation all of them had the pine labs POS machines versus bank specific ones, even when they see the AMEX card they get the pine labs machine which has always work in my case.

Regarding using Amazon pay, there's no petrol specific vouchers, all you need is purchase the Amazon pay vouchers which once redeemed the amount gets added in your Amazon pay balance and you pay it from there for anything and everything you need. Hope this helps

I tried this, doesn't work. I tried contacting the CC and there has been no response to this question. They have also removed the 1% surcharge waiver and converted that into fuel cashback, not sure what logic this makes.

The 2k limit on fuel is idiotic. This has been my go to card for fuel for almost 15 years now and now I am no longer keen on using it. Trying to find a suitable alternative, which is not fuel company specific.
