Re: The Trekking Thread

For a long time I have been dreaming about going to Mukurthy from Ooty side.
And this is what which put me on to the dream iand!

Only place that I have heard about in south, which freezes in Winter (You can actually see ice!). Hence december time would be ideal!

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travel...near-ooty.html

Want to trek here but not in the rains. I want to snap landscapes to my heart's content ! (Snapping bug you see )

Hey that is still my perception about that place. But I am not the expert. Need to check which is right time to visit. But ice is something, which I thought would be nice to see!

Getting the permissions from the Forest Dept is very difficult. I had personally visited the Forest office in Ooty to enquire/get permissions, but to no avail. This was in September and everyone in the forest office said they were not giving permissions anymore. Probably, you need a local contact to follow up as hotstuff has noted in the below quotes.

I was planning to go to Mukurthy this October, but could not manage to get permissions. I even went to Ooty to talk to the Forest Office there, but could not meet the in-charge person and all others were saying permissions are not given. Let us know what was the procedure you guys took to get permissions.

Btw, I just completed the Parambikulam Tramway trek last weekend, the same day you went to Mukurthy. It was finally off my list after postponing it a few times. Thanks a lot to you & your travelogue for introducing me that place. I loved every moment of it.

EDIT: Even I found pugmarks of an Adult male Tiger on the Tramway trail. Talk about coincidence!!

In our case, I understand that the person who procured the permits persistently followed up with the forest department officials for almost a month!. He was also trying to get permission for a trek into the inner areas of Silent Valley national park, but no luck so far. I guess it depends on the moods of the forest officials...

The easiest way is to get someone locally in Ooty to follow-up for the permits / or you keep perstering the forest department officials till you get the papers.

Also, since permits may be given to a limited number of people at any time, try to avoid long weekends etc. when there can be two or three groups trying for the same accomodation facilities (i.e. the fishing hut.)

Addy need an algorithm for success to get in there!
This is something which cannot be missed for the world!
Please find some way or the other and I am with you! (Err.... We are with you atleast @Figo and me!)

Trekking in Western Ghats of Karnataka is nice and beautiful. But this per my perception is something different.
It may not be a difficult trek, but the crystal clear water bodies, viewed from long angles make the device divine!

All set to go towards Kanoor Kote this weekend . The only problem: the only seats we could find were on the last row of a Rajahamsa

That place seems to be a photographer's delight. Would love to spend the whole day next to the Mukurthi Lake. I would surely love to go there but not at all physically fit to any such trek. But guess I still have time till December to gain some fitness back

The trek has been postponed to Aug 13th due to heavy rains and extreme weather conditions inside the forest. We were willing, but the forest guards who were supposed to accompany us were not! So you will have to wait a bit longer for the log. Also, due to the weather condition, the trek may be cut short a bit. Going to Ambasamudram looks like a remote possiblity now.

Re: The Trekking Thread

Ampere bhai, was not able to go to the trek as I was completely down and out due to viral fever. But my friend went for the trek along with the guards. He sighted bisons and other wild life during the trek. Actually that was the worst part, listening to him talking about the wild life sightings, the omni present fog, etc. Sigh!!
