People speed up on this road without realising there is a slight deviation 1/3rd of the way up (heading towards Sahajanand/ Mahatma society)

+1 to this. The deviation is difficult to spot if drving in dark at high speed

Was that an Indicab?
These guys are a menace on the roads!
Recently, seeing a lot of these guys in that area, at all times through the night. Always lost on the lanes of Mahatma Society, looking for the address They park right in the middle of the road, as if the world is ending!

The way they drive - I always keep a safe distance while passing them.

When I travelled through this patch today evening arnd 7, the road was still in its own pathetic glory. I wonder what those PMC guys have done because they still have not laid out the tarmac. Bavdhan has really become a nightmare these days. My daily Baner-Kothrud 11 KM stretch takes me around 50 mins.

Oh, when I had a look at this cab, I thought something fell on this car coz you can see a vertical wave pattern on the bonnet. The bumper and left tire is gone for good.

IMHO, the worst driver is a guy on a motorbike travelling from Mahatma society towards Kumar parisar (who drops his kid off at a babysitter perhaps). This guy carries an infant around 3 to 6 months old in a front harness while riding the bike. The poor infant is bent over backwards and I am afraid she will have some neck problems. I have seen this thrice now around the same time so could be a regular thing. How much time will it take for another person to accompany as a pillion rider or this guy to take an auto? I find it disgusting.

Oh that Bavdhan area is a mess even before getting to the 'necklace' part. Yesterday evening, we had to go to Aundh for some work, so thought we would take the Bavdhan route. Just at the top, near the petrol pump, we could see a long stretch of vehicles jammed up, I am sure by people coming in from the wrong side. Took a u turn and headed back towards Kothrud. I guess we will all end up living and socialising with people only from our areas. Gone are the days when we went to different places to play Holi or on Dussehra to give 'sona'.
happy Dussehra to everyone by the way

At the pointwhere culverts are being built at various points on this road, there is just about enough space for two cars to pass by. A bus and car - NO. Surpisingly, no wrong side driving - just the sheer volume of traffic trying to pass through multiple bottlenecks causes the line up. The occassional heavy vehicle becomes the problem.

Yesterday evening during return commute, I was half a klick from my home and I realized it would take at least 15 mins at these bottlenecks. I came off the road, had a hair-cut and 25 mins laters the road had cleared up. Time well spent, I say!

re: Pune : Roads, traffic conditions, route queries and other assorted rants

Last night, around 11 p.m., I took a autorickshaw from Ginger (Bom-Bang highway) to Yerawada. The driver took me through the backyards of Pimple Saudagar and reached CME on roads that were first time travel for me. I was amazed by the good quality roads in this area.

And after getting stuck for 2 hours from Mumbai airport to Chembur, Pune roads feels like heaven.

Yes dot Airport to Chembur is the worst stretch.

Some questions immediately came to mind after reading your post:

- Rick was available at 11 PM?
- How many fellows did you ask before one was ready to take you to Yerwada?
- Was the meter working and how much did he charge you?

My experience with Rick fellows is simply not good. I think they believe that they are doing a favour on us by plying their vehicles on road to provide us the service. Conversly in Mumbai the situation is much better.

Ok enough of the Rick rant.

Well I had fun and my answers are in bold below.

Oh yes, several were there.

- How many fellows did you ask before one was ready to take you to Yerwada?

Everyone wanted to come. It became a price game. The lowest bidder won. The lowest bidder came running back to us after had we walked off from our initial discussion.

- Was the meter working and how much did he charge you?

No meter. He asked for 350 which I thought was ok, considering the distance. Later I gave a 50 buck tip for being nice and showing me new roads.

re: Pune : Roads, traffic conditions, route queries and other assorted rants

Today I had to drop my wife to airport. She had flight at 11:30 am. So started from Bavdhan at 9:40 am. I was expecting to reach airport around 10:30 but the traffic was so light that I reached airport in flat 28 minutes.
i had taken the Bavdhan --> Pashan --> University road --> Shivajinager --> COEP --> Pune Station --> Nager road --> Airport

Light traffic can be attributed to 2 facts :
1. Pune people staying at home for puja, traditional lunch
2. Non - Pune people going to there hometown for long weekend.

If I may suggest an even faster route, which can be useful during normal day traffic.

Pashan -- UoP -- Range Hills -- Holkar Bridge -- Vishrantwadi -- Airport

Dotty, the reason for the roads being nice in that area is, the entire area belongs to the Armed Forces.
See the roads around Southren Command. They've been in great condition for a long time now. In fact, I do not remember any road work being carried out in those areas at all.

Yes its a cab and it is still lying there. It has a blue traveltime sticker on rear windshield. One interesting thing is that all registration number stickers have been scratched off after the accident. Why would someone do that? In any case, the cab can be identified by chassis no/ VIN. Has there been some damage to life/ property?

Another good route is Pashan > UoP > Agriculture college > left to Saakhar Sankul > right turn at rail underpass > Shoppers stop > Sangamwadi 'bypass'/ 120 feet road > Yerwada > Airport

Just a note to self: Range Hills roads are in bad conditions after rains. Avoid travel. Instead come go via ESquare, Shivaji Nagar, left - Sakhar Sankul-Underpass, ShoppersStop and then use the Sangamwadi (?) bridge which we can take after Shoppers stop on old Mum-Pune highway.

For all those wanting to take an auto at odd hours, you might want to have a look at this thread, created by fellow BHPian from Bangy. Seems to be a great service.
