10 fold rise in traffic fines. Finally!

Thirteen years since the last revision, brace for paying 10 times higher fine for violating traffic rules. The Union law ministry has given its assent for a quantum increase in fines to promote safe driving and curb soaring road accident deaths.

10-fold rise in fines for traffic violations - The Times of India

The primary objective of a fine should be to act as a deterrent and not to be affordable. While these revised amounts seem ok for now, they could be obsolete within the next couple of years.
Why not revise the fines to a percentage of the original vehicle OTR price? Some other suggestions can be discussed, but definitely a long overdue step in the correct direction.
