Well summarized and I agree with you. In my limited experience of driving/traveling in India in recent years, I felt that things have gotten worse. Everyone seems to be in a hurry (This thread (Anecdotal evidence: New breed of commercial vehicles (cabs, delivery) are destroying road discipline) for example). I prefer to be driven rather drive in the city. It is too stressful to drive in the city.

The simplest example is the difference in what flashing your headlights mean in the two countries.
  • India: I'm flashing my headlights to assert my right of way. You stop.
  • Australia: I'm flashing my headlights to give you the right of way. You move first.
By the way, I should also add that people do get their elbows out here in Australian roads, but that's an exception and not the norm. People do get into fights on the road.

And I disagree and ensure I give way whenever possible.
Here's one such example!
Good on you. It feels great to put a smile on some stranger's face isn't it.

Sorry to know about the accident. Kudos to you and the biker for handling the situation maturely. I hope you can put this incident behind and enjoy your new car. I wish you many happy miles.

I remember him whenever I see enraging behavior from someone on the road.
I'm glad to see courtesy and positivity being acknowledged and exchanged. It takes two gentlemen to provide and accept an apology.

And I agree with you. I do this only when it is safe to do so. The dashcam footage does make it look faster than it actually is.

From my time as a pedestrian, I have realised that you cannot be a law-abiding pedestrian on 95% of the roads because the infrastructure just does not exist.

In this particular place it is a crowded residential area with no legal crossing for a long stretch.

However, a zebra crossing has been painted at this very location. So I would think there is still hope!

Re: Unusual / funny / heartwarming experiences on the road

So, a weird incident I had @ Cochin the other day was that while I was with my dad in the car, waiting to make a U-turn near one of the Metro stations, we saw a beautiful purple colored Mustang 5.0 GT that was also making the U-turn along with our car. After a few seconds, while we are still waiting for a space to enter the other side of the road, some dude in a new C220d honks at us non stop till we turn around and gives us the side eye for no reason, even though it was clearly marked as a U-turn lane

Re: Unusual / funny / heartwarming experiences on the road

Thought I read a post about the tail door of a car opening while the car was moving.

And this happened today about 75 feet ahead of me today, in JP Nagar. Traffic was light, luckily and nothing happened to anyone. The door of this Kwid suddenly popped open upwards, but the driver and 2 passengers seemed unaware of it all, just continued to go on . Some folks on the road tried to alert them, and they finally stopped about 200m down the road after it happened. And they stopped in the right lane, and the rear passenger trying to reach the hatch door from inside to close it !

Re: Unusual / funny / heartwarming experiences on the road

After driving around a Yellow Jimny for a while, have noticed that on some of the rare isolated rural roads of Kerala that I often traverse, people have tried to flag me down a few times. Not the automobile enthusiast type of crowd, but the humble hard working daily bread earner kind of folks. Men, women with kids and all. Hasn't happened while I am in other cars on the same stretches.

The only conclusion I could derive is that these folks could be mistaking the Jimny for one of those bright coloured mini people carriers from the Tata stable, which does public transportation duties on these roads.

Re: Unusual / funny / heartwarming experiences on the road

Yesterday evening around 6.30 pm, with sufficient light still there, a car is coming up from the opp direction on an undivided road, with it's High-Beam on. Looking at that car, I flashed my car's high-beams and held it so he understands. What made my moment there, was that the guy behind me in a TUV300 also did the same immediately, trying to tell that car to get off his high-beams.

I dont know if the offending driver complied, because I passed by that car while I checked in my IRVM who was this guy behind me. Also, once that TUV300 guy passed that car, he switched off his high-beams.

Re: Unusual / funny / heartwarming experiences on the road

1. The other day I was coming from Kundalahalli and waiting atop Marathahalli bridge at the signal. Those who know will understand that the road is open for a right turn at that signal to go down the bridge towards KR Puram. So when the light turned green, a cab from Bellandur side sped away towards Kundalahalli. Only when it crossed over the road, I saw a plastic string break and fall on the road - traffic police had "closed" that turn with that string which was literally invisible at night. All other commuters followed suit and started turning right. The couple of constables ran and got back their string barricade but it was too late. Traffic won't stop as the traffic lights showed an open right turn. Three constables with a thread in hand and desperately trying to stop the traffic while no one cared for second, it was some sight to see.

Yesterday near Silk Board junction, I saw broken bamboo sticks, plastic strings and old water drums being used in different places to indicate lanes between metro pillars. BBMP and cops never fail to surprise.

2. Over the years, I have been queried by people about what "OD" stands for in my car's number plate. The latest was on the 80 ft road Indiranagar where an old lady came charging at me. I thought she didn't want me to park in front of an under-construction house. But then spoke with a smile and asked me about the state.

The funniest was in Varkala. Three men were staring while I waited in the car in a residential area. There were agitated discussions among them. Finally after good 7-8 mins, one of them walks up to the car, asks me to roll down the window and then asks what OD stands for. Hearing my answer, his face drops and he walks back. Then another guy comes up and asks me again. Hearing Odisha, he yells happily taking me by surprise. Then he explained that the 3 friends were fighting regarding the state of origin and had bet their responses. He had won and would get 2 ice creams now!

3. I saw this truck today. What caught my attention is none of the men and boys on the carrier were looking at phone screen. Some were relaxing on the 'bed', others were fast asleep.

Re: Unusual / funny / heartwarming experiences on the road

Q) Why did the cow try to cross the road?

Unusual / funny / heartwarming experiences on the road-1.png
Spotted a cow trying to cross the road, but her leash was tied/caught on something on the left side of the road, so she was stuck in the middle.

Someone from the white Swift stepped out to move her to the roadside since a jam was forming. Everone stopped and waited patiently without creating a fuss.

The vehicles cleared, but the cow was still looking longingly at the other side of the road, and reluctant to return to the left side.

I got out to pet the cow...

...and she followed me to the side.

Then the cow's owner came to the scene, she explained what had transpired:

A) The rest of her herd crossed the road, to go lie under the shade of trees to beat the afternoon sun, but this one got her rope stuck.

to you for the kind gesture.

Rope around the neck is understandable but the leash, especially the length of it, is a sure shot recipe for disaster. I hope the owner realises this before it's too late.

I like the story! But a biker might have ridden around the cow without seeing the rope: that could be a disaster.

(No need to blur pictures of public: they are public, people get photographed all the time!)

These dont tighten. It's more a loop and knotted to give enough free movement , but not the loop is not that long that it can be taken out even by a human without undoing the knot.

Ha! Happened to me in college. I was riding my bike on a narrow road leading to a beach, with my friend at the back. The road had fields on both sides. A cow ran across the road from one field to the one opposite, passing in front of us. What I didn't notice was that it had been tethered to a tree and the rope was long enough to stretch taut across the road! The bike hit the rope, luckily I was going quite slow (especially since I used to ride like an idiot back then) and probably the weight of the pillion prevented the bike from flipping, so it was a small fall. No one, including the blessed creature, was hurt.

Agreed. If you look closely in the first pic, the rope is taut on both sides of the Swift, but barely visible. If he hadn't stopped there, I myself might have tried to drive though and snagged that rope on my bumper and...

It's common practise is rural areas, usually they tie it somewhere away from the road, so that the cow can graze over a wider area without needing relocation or being able to wander off. This was a dangerous situation though.
