Spot on.

Many months back I heard someone`s rationale in booking a city, saying it has a sunroof and my son would like that very much to stick his neck out through it.

The cars that advertise the sunroof also include kids in their video, a subtle hint at whats coming after you buy it.

The entire blame is on the driver \ owner without a doubt.

If I remember right, the Creta facelift launch advertisement had a person sticking their torso out the sunroof in a moving car. I vaguely remember it being discussed on the launch thread (or probably this one?).

There are some Skoda India ads I remember and recently the Ford ecosport - all centered around the sunroof and a bunch of kids.

Marketing guys certainly know what they are doing, I am not so sure about parents though.

Re: Dangerous Trend : Kids standing & sticking out of Sunroofs!

If you want to understand what happens to a human head when a small loose object hits at high speeds. Look no further than Felipe Massa's crash from Hungary, 2009:

And the aftermath was this:

Dangerous Trend : Kids standing & sticking out of Sunroofs!-massa.jpg

And this dude's head was all stuffed up in high quality motorsporting gear.

I'll leave it to your imagination, what happens when such an object flies onto an unprotected head.

Parenting at it's best.
While the kids were enjoying their joyride, parents were busy enjoying their cellphones.
Mind you this was on the NH48 and I was following them for almost 6 - 7 kms and the person driving seemed like the father was cruising comfortably at speeds upwards of 90 KMPH.

While I clearly understand and appreciate your concern about the foolhardiness of the folks in the four ringed car, I do feel that we are setting a bad example by clicking a photo while driving and posting it here.

Forgive me if the photo was taken in any other way; by the non driver of the car you were in.

Haven't seen the skoda ad yet, but at least in the ecosport advert the children are shown properly seated and buckled up while looking out of the sun roof. I don't know, but I don't see the harm in that .

Re: Dangerous Trend : Kids standing & sticking out of Sunroofs!

My son (a neurosurgeon) faced such an emergency. A girl (about 5) had her skull badly damaged as she was standing out of the roof a Skoda. He had to rush to Fortis and carry out an emergency surgery. Fortunately, the girl made a full recovery. The parents wanted him to replace the damaged skull which he refused. So they took her to the UK to get her fixed. Incidentally, he is a member here!

It is very Dangerous here up North with the New Chinese Kite Flying String, It has caused immense injury to two wheeler drivers and with a fast car it will be very dangerous, Schools should send circulars about this to parents to never allow a child to stand in the sun roof, Also the Government should make amendments in the Motor Vehicle Act to make this a challanable offence to have some one standing in the sun roof while the is car being driven at speeds above 30 km/hr.

Technically, they can be fined for doing this. Here is an image from the MV Act:

The person sticking their head out of the sunroof isn't technically in the car's body.

Sorry, but I have an off-topic query.

I'm curious as to how one can have their skull replaced. Never imagined that to be possible!

It is through bone grafts that the skull can be reconstructed. I am not sure whether this young lady will need follow up surgeries as she grows.

We wish her a long and fruitful life.

Let me add a few details. There were shards of the bone which were embedded into the brain. All this had to be cleaned out. Also, this was the 'farmhouse' crowd and many of the escorts were 'sloshed out'. My son had a big problem driving from Gurugram to Vasant Kunj, typical for a Saturday evening, when the road is choc-a-bloc with traffic. The hospital was calling every few minutes, and ultimately he got irritated and told them, I am in a car and not a chopper.

In the meanwhile he got all tests etc done (medico-legal requirements) so he could rush directly into the theatre. I must say the family is very grateful and have been sending hampers to him and the hospital at every festival. He was having some evening fruit at home when the call came from the Hospital!

Re: Dangerous Trend : Kids standing & sticking out of Sunroofs!

Some days ago I saw a moron sticking his head out of sun-roof. At some point I was doing 60/70 and this guy just overtook me. He was zig-zagging around and I was scared that he might fall off.
