Let me add my experience too
At times when they swipe our card, the transaction falls through for several reasons.
By that time we might have even got an SMS that the amount has been debited.
In most cases, the amount debited for a failed transaction will be automatically rolled back by the bank. Else we can place a complaint for the same with the bank.

In some cases, the vendor might have (accidentally) charged you twice. In such situations, the bank does not have to roll back any of the transactions because neither transaction failed.
Here the vendor is responsible to pay back the extra amount charged. If they don't co-operate, we can place a complaint with the Bank, who inter pass on the complaint to Visa/Master.

Did the attendant report any issues with the card at the time of swiping in the POS terminal?

Why do I see a difference of 44 minutes between the time of bill generation and swiping the card?

The bill shows the time as 19.27
The charge slip shows the time as 20.11

Or was it because of wrong time setting.

Anyways... you are sure to get back your money unless you have signed two charge slips.

It happened to me many times. Talking to them ideally solves the problem. One worst incident was...

Swiped the card, Transaction got approved, Got SMS immideatly, Paper reel in the machine was over, so Print wasnt comming, Sales boy says, I need SLIP, without which i cant let you Go.
Showed him SMS, But still he wasnt ready to accept it. He demands receipt from that machine.

Had to wait for 30 min, Then Manager comes, Opens Almirah, pulls out paper reel, Feed it, Re prints the transaction, Sales boy Happy, Me Pis*** off.

From then on, I have made a habit of Parking the Car, check whether machine is working or Not. Swipe the card, Fill Fuel, then Leave. Time wasted 2-5 min, but Peace of mind.

Would suggest the OP insist on a transaction Void slip instead of cash so that surcharges are taken into account properly. Is 2222.21 amount with surcharge or without?

If the bank said it will be automatically reversed, they are right. The transaction would have been approved but connection to the merchant would have cut off and the bank can see that in their system. They automatically reverse that within 3 business days. The system sucks, but it is what it is. I have workes with a bank and seen this happen a lot and with the amount of times it happens they have a problem reversing it immediately.

The amount is still not reversed. Shell says its not charged but it is debited. Sbi helpline is not reachable and i am traveling in maharashtra now so can't go there till i am back :(

Last week, en route to work, I tanked up the Bonnie at Shell Sankey Road and paid the attendant by card.

The cashier at the bay swiped my card and removed the card as soon as the merchant charge slip was generated. The machine did not display the amount before I entered the card pin number (some machines don't display the amount). I got an SMS immediately though but didn't bother to check as with most people, we trust that Shell does not cheat customers.. but I was wrong. Also, I was in a hurry and did not want to remove my gloves, zip lock bag for the phone, etc. etc.

I was overcharged for the transaction and realized only when I saw the SMS after I reached work. The Shell India website had the phone number of the outlet and I called and spoke to the owner. I also sent the copy of the SMS showing the charge and the pump bill via whatsapp. He promised to look into this which he did.

I got a call an hour or so later and the owner mentioned that he checked the CCTV and did find that I was overcharged and the cashier was taken to task. I was asked to drop by anytime and collect the balance which was overcharged to me.

A similar stunt was tried by the Shell Lavelle road branch. The attendant asked me to fill premium fuel but I insisted on regular. Another attendant distracted me and the first guy proceeded to fill premium unleaded gasoline. I noticed this after a few seconds and immediately asked the attendant to stop and demanded to speak with the manager.

The attendant lied that I asked for premium while I stuck to my guns. They then filled regular fuel and waived off the charge for the premium fuel filled. 300 bucks loss for them but I guess they swindle so many unsuspecting people everyday, this loss is loose change for them.

Aditya, thats strange. The Sankey road Shell guys are one of the best staff I've found so far in any petrol bunk and in general they dont create any hassle. I live 5 minutes away, and I fill up only there always. Surprising that you had such an incident. They have a regular line and a premium line. In general, if you go to the regular line they dont ask about premium fuel at all. Or it may be my case, because I go there so often that they know my preference and dont ask anything. A couple of years ago, I dropped my bluetooth earpiece when removing my helmet, and I had no clue where I lost it. Next day when I went to the bunk, the attendant remembered and asked me if I had dropped my bluetooth earpiece. In general I've had good experience with these guys.
