Re: Loneliest Road Stretch in (South) India

The most lonliest stretch I have driven was between Achankovil-Konni in Kerala.
Most of the highways in Kerala are of good quality except for the width of the interior roads.
We ventured into this highway from Achankovil initial 10-12kms was good after that it was
gravel and lot of culvets where low ground clearance vehicle would scrape their underbody.
We were in an SUV.This road is into thick of forest for about 35kms literally no human
settlements.

Was this road open? Because for a long time I remember, this was not open thanks to the power plant.

Did my schooling in that place and during those days, we used to roam around in that forest to eat fruits (purple colored fruit, donno whats it called), collect stones for games and swim in water streams. Probably that gave a bit of confidence
Wow! Schooling in this region is as best as it can get! Was it Kadra or Kaiga?
Beautiful place!

Yes the road was open. It sees traffic majorly during day time.

Yes, studied in Kadra KPC school. Have lot more such scary memories there

You know that place?

Sorry my mistake. You must have crossed a railway line for sure.

When I look at Google, I see the following section which is marked. I thought should have actually planned Belur-Somwarpet road? No ?
Route Link

But what ever : On a rain; with no one around; on a bike and such a road !

Re: Loneliest Road Stretch in (South) India

@ampere : Could possibly be that road, but again I am not sure. Will have to go back someday and put a GPS track down. But there was absolutely no tarmac for about 30 odd kilometers.

The darkness due to clouds, no humans around and typical malnad rains beating down on me made it a scary yet adventurous experience. Max speed possible was 20 kmph on that road!

Awesome!! I will do that road now after monsoons.
This thread has really excited me. I think all these roads described in this thread should be comfortably doable in a Gypsy.

Eagerly awaiting a write-up from you after that .

The road in itself is not in bad shape now. You can fly through even in a low car like a civic. I did this stretch in a cousin's Accord back then, when the roads were average . Just that the dense forest atmosphere is creepy with the silence and deserted nature. I could count in single digits (maybe <5) the number of vehicles I totally saw on that ~80km stretch. Also, like another person mentioned, this dense jungle is a notorious elephant zone which you may want to watch out for. Happy journey!

Re: Loneliest Road Stretch in (South) India

A long time (about 20-21 years) back, we once lost our way while going to Sabarimala. It was past mid-night and from somewhere we made a wrong turn. That road itself had almost no traffic, but there were few teashops etc which were closed. A few km down that road, we found a sign-board which said "Sabarimala" and we took that road, feeling very happy. But that road turned out to be very narrow, some kind of forest road, with tall grass on either side and no sign of civilization for a what felt like a very long time. We had no vehicles coming behind us or opposite us. But, the sign-board was right and we were able to join the main road to Sabarimala some time later.

Ironically, the other time when I've felt really lonely on the road was on the Angamaly-Mannuthy stretch, in broad daylight, on a hartal day. It was a 6am-6pm hartal and I had to reach Thrissur early. So I started from Cochin at about 2:30pm. The route had some traffic till Angamaly, but after that, I could literally count on my fingers how many vehicles I saw till I reached Mannuthy.

Yes, the former.

If you need a formal definition, here it is:
  • Creepy
  • Unpredictable
  • No human being around; possible presence of wildlife
  • No signposts; your mobile has gone dead long back
  • Not good visibility
  • You are at the mercy of nature
  • If something goes wrong with your Equipment, MyTVS will take hours to reach you

There is a definite thrill in driving on these roads !!
