I'm sure the bill would have been half the amount if insurance was not used.
Actually, it is the other way around. The insurance supervisors off late do not give the service center executives an open hand anymore. The insurance companies have started to use the wholesaler buyer principle off late, so there is a good chance the bill would have been the same either way, if not more.

That bill is a real shocker. Paying just 4k from the pocket against the total bill is another shocker as well ! Which insurance was used?
The roadside assistance was good and prompt. But its also surprising that a vehicle of iconic toughness as the defender got so much damaged just by going off the road a little bit.

Zero depreciation is a must for premium cars. In all these years I've paid nearly 6 lacs premium in total for my Porsche, although by god's grace never had to use insurance.
Still it's worth it.
