The Uber driver declined to go to BIAL Airport today morning, citing permission issues. Is it the norm nowadays?

Faced a similar situation here at CIAL. But I was able to avail the service. He called and asked me to wait right in front of the arrival exit. The reason for this was due to the issues with the local taxis as they do not encourage these cabs and often create a scene outside the airport. So these guys wait outside the airport with their apps switched off and only turn it on when they are well clear from the airport. Might be something similar there too.

Not aware of Bangalore or Kochi but no issues at Hyderabad. Uber adds a surcharge of 100/- for both drop and arrival of which they pay 130/- towards parking.

Am surprised the ridiculous and violent protest against Uber from the French taxi drivers hasn't been mentioned here as yet!

"We are faced with permanent provocation (from Uber) to which there can only be one response: total firmness in the systematic seizure of offending vehicles," Serge Metz, the head of the taxi company G7, said on French television. "We are truly sorry to have to hold clients and drivers hostage. We're not doing this lightly."

Did they take a holiday to the nubra valley in ladakh? Or maybe to mangalore, goa etc? The local taxi mafias there seem to be doing the exact same thing.

re: Review: Uber Premium Taxi Service

For those interested, a couple of recent Uber related articles from Bloomberg.

The Current State of Uber’s Global Challenges, Mapped

This Is How Uber Takes Over a City

The article about Portland is interesting, as it shows how Uber is trying to change over from being a bad boy that revels in breaking rules, to a more mainstream service provider, positioning itself at the forefront of the economy. But in the process, they are spending an absolute bomb on lobbying and PR.

re: Review: Uber Premium Taxi Service

Random tid-bit: I recently found out that Uber drivers don't get to see the final destination you've entered until after they accept the ride!

I guess this circumvents the most common problem that users face with regular taxis & rickshaws (ie. being empty, but not wanting to go where you want to go!)

Yes that's correct but they are trying to be clever. In past 2 weeks 2 times driver cancelled on my dad.

First time was horrible. Cab came for pickup, dad got in and the driver accepted the trip. When he saw the destination he said he cant go there and told my dad to cancel! He said he wants airport side not other side. Dad blasted him and then he agreed.

Yesterday guy called twice to ask the destination. First time dad told him that he is not obliged to tell destination. Second time he called again saying please tell destination I am 5 minutes away. Dad told him where he wanted to go and the guy says ok. 5 mins later he doesn't show up. He calls dad and tells him his cab has broken down and he cannot come anymore. Tells dad to cancel as he will get charged for rejecting the booking and dad wont get charged as he is more than 5mins away. Dad refuses to cancel. In the end the driver cancelled after 15mins and dad booked another one.

This was never the case before. Drivers would never call and ask destination.

re: Review: Uber Premium Taxi Service

Uber is set to invest a sum of $50 million (Rs. 317 crore approximately) over the next five years in India. This is a part of the $1 billion investment that the company was planning for India and China.

The San Francisco-based company is planning to set up a new facility in Hyderabad. The new facility is expected to be its largest outside the US and will house around 500 employees.

The company has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Government of Telangana to create jobs and entrepreneurship opportunities. It is collaborating with Telangana Academy for Skills and Knowledge to train 2,000 candidates by the end of 2016. These candidates will then become Uber cab drivers.

Uber claims that its vehicle finance programme and technology platform will help first-time vehicle ownership and provide economic opportunities for its trained candidates. The company also plans to work with the government to develop a new regulatory framework for on-demand transportation technology aggregator services.

Bucking the trend of reducing the per-km fares, UBER in Mumbai seems to have increased the fares for UberBlack and UberSUV categories from today.

The earlier fares were 13 Rs per km. Now its 17 Rs for UberBlack and 18 Rs for UberSUV. Although the minimum fare remains unchanged at Rs 150, the base-fare and per minute charge has also been increased for Black and SUV.

re: Review: Uber Premium Taxi Service

In November last year, Uber had added an additional step to its billing process. User had to link their Uber accounts to PayTM wallets, which needed to be recharged (click here to read report). Now the company is giving its users a choice to pay through their existing PayTM or credit cards. However, the credit card payment option is available only on the Android smartphone platform.

Users will be able to add more than one credit card to their accounts. Credit cards issued by Mastercard, Visa and American Express will be accepted.
